Between Houston and Beaumont is/was a place called The Boondocks. It was built out on a dock over the bayou. The specialty was spicy fried catfish, but the real attraction was the hush puppies they gave you to toss to the alligators while you waited for your table. It was quite a place.
Unfortunately this is gone now, but check out the Pine Tree Lodge on LaBelle Road. Not quite the same atmosphere, but excellent stuffed crab!

Thanks for the great suggestions!! I knew I could count on eGulleters!
Yes, we're coming to the cake competition although I'm not entering myself, I've only been caking for two years and I need to work on a lot of skills before I'm ready for that!!
Again, thanks for all the suggestions. That smoked bologna sounds very intriguing!

My friends and I will be going to the Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show and need some recommendations for dinner places.
I'm a Louisiana native living in southeast Texas, so I'm used to Tex-Mex and Cajun cuisine....what sort of food is most popular in OK?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions! We're trying to stay under $20 an entree and far, far away from national chains.

My knee-jerk guess is buttercream.
I love reading your blogs and dining threads! I'm mostly a lurker but I wanted to tell you that your threads are very enjoyable.

Wonderful blog!
As a Cajun born and raised in Louisiana and then Texas, I really enjoyed reading about the area my ancestors are from.
Darling children!!

Another vote for crispy outside, chewy inside.

do you have to be a professional to participate?
Unless I'm reading the entry form wrong, anyone over 18 can enter the wedding cake competition.

Cutting cake boards with the X-acto.....and forgetting the silpat was underneath!! Oh well, I now have 3 silpats instead of two....
