  1. Been in Regina for about 4 weeks now. Tried Michi and was a little disappointed. Not sure if it was in the quality of the ingredients, if it was poorly made or if I just ordered the wrong stuff; but everything was pretty blah. Will probably hit Greko's next week, if I have time and Zest after that. Unable to upload pics yet, will hopefully be able to do that soon.

Edit: A friend of mine is recommending Beer Bros. Anyone been there before? The menu looks interesting.

  2. I'm leaving for Regina in a couple weeks. Although I'll be spending a few months there I won't have a ton of free time; basically on the weekends and not all of them either. I've found two places that I'd like to visit so far based on the forum, Weczeria and Michi Sushi. Can't guarantee that I'll get to all the recommendations but I'll squeeze in what I can.

  3. How was the chocolate? I'm keen to try the earl grey. For some reason, I'm always a sucker for tea-flavoured goods.

I was actually kind of disappointed with their chocolate. When I first tried the original the custard center was surprisingly cool and creamy. I don't really like the usual custard-filled baked goods so it was a nice discovery. I guess I tried their chocolate with higher expectations because I felt really let down. There wasn't much chocolatey flavour and the center wasn't as cool as the first time. I think it might be because they had been filled and left to sit for a bit whereas the first time there was a line and it had been just filled. Anyone else noticing a difference since they first opened?

  4. i didn't read all the replies since i'm in class.but what bout pho hong on waltham and kingsway. i love their soup base for the pho. its not heavy on m.s.g.  that place i think at some point in time must have been a greek restaurant cuz that's what the decorations inside look like. its busy busy.

Pho Hong was the first Vietnamese noodle place that I ever went to, although I can't say it's the best place for noodles in the Lower Mainland I would say that it's definitely one of the top places. What I really look for is consistency and both the noodles and broth are usually very good.

Places for Korean food on Kingsway. Woo Rae Oak has gotten better recently, think the cook or the owner changed in the last year or so. Han Woo Ri is a decent spot too, I just can't get over finding a rotten quail egg in my jap tang bap. But I like how they serve shik kae at the end of the meal. My last visit to Mi Sun Rae was very bad. The non-marinated galbi was very tough and they even got one of our meat orders wrong. Don't think we've gone back since.

A place that I liked to go to before is Pearl House on Kingsway and Sperling, pretty standard Taiwanese style food. In Crystal Mall I really like Libo for their HK cafe style food and milk tea. Also in the mall is Top Gun where you can get some dim sum, I can't say it's the best but probably the best I can find so close to home.

For sushi [sushi Garden] really depends whether or not the owner is there. The portions are pretty big and I think that's the main reason why people go. I've only been there once but Sushi Haru had some interesting stuff to offer like their salmon pizza, some of their stuff can be seen here. I haven't been there in about a year so I'll have to go back and check to see how things are going.

That's about it for now, it's late and I'm not sure if my sentences are making any sense. If there's anything I'm leaving out I'll post it up later.

  5. I think they do have the other flavours out (unless they stopped making them). Last time I went about a month ago, I bought some matcha flavoured cream puffs. They had a schedule posted showing which flavours they would be making on each day.  They still didn't have some of their non-cream-puff goods yet though.

I went on Wednesday and tried their chocolate. You're right about the schedule. It looks like it's a 3 day for each flavour rotation.

  6. How much crab is a good amount to order?  I always get confused when ordering seafood by the pound.

I've also heard that Aberdeen Center is an interesting cultural experience.  It, like, an Asian mall, right?  Worth stopping by?

What should I seek out on Granville Island?  The Public Market obviously, but what else, what part is best?  What's this Loft I'm reading about? I can't find a clear description?  It seems like there's a lot there.  With regards to Go Fish, it seems like a nice lunch spot.  Is it walking distance from the Public Market?  It's not clear on Google Maps how the roads work.

    Stanley Park, worth checking out?

I'm looking for a couple lunch spots.  A Japadog will be had as a snack because I'm a Bourdain whore like that.  I have three lunches but only two dinners, most likely, so how can I maximize my daytime eating?  But what other spots are lunch-y and good?

I think the amount of crab depends on what else you're planning to eat. When I go out for crab with my family, about 7 people will have a good amount of crab when we order about three 3lb crabs. We usually get a few other items so if you're thinking of going crab only maybe you'll need to up the ratio.

I think there are a lot more malls in Richmond that are more "Asian" but I do like Aberdeen. You can grab a puff at Beard Papa, take a look around Daiso (a Japanese $2 store), grab a plate of shaved ice at Frappe Bliss, grab some snacks from Candyland or try out a place in the foodcourt or the various restaurants scattered in there. I wouldn't go to Richmond just to go to Aberdeen if time is limited but if you're in Richmond it might be worth to drop by.

If you're talking about The Net Loft, the stores I know of include a book store, Paper-ya (a lot of neat stationary and paper products), an eyeglass store, a coffee shop and various craft stores. I think Paper-ya is worth taking a look into has a few neat things to look at and maybe take back as souveniers.

Stanley Park isn't a bad place to go but I wouldn't say that you have to go there. It offers some nice views, a lot of trees, water and some totem poles; but if you're not into that you might want to skip it.

As for Japadog I personally like the Miso Mayo with the pork brawtwurst. If you don't plan on going to Japadog more than once, select wisely. I've snapped a pic of all of the Japanese style hot dogs here. Nothing wrong with being a Bourdain whore, he's made me want to visit a few places like Montreal, Osaka and Portland just to name a few.

I've been to Tojo's twice last year. I have a few pictures from my first and second visit. Although both visits didn't exactly blow me away there are a few dishes like the smoked sablefish have stuck with me. I won't say that it's the best sushi place in Vancouver but I haven't regretted going.

As for other suggestions I think there are many more people in this forum that are better able to point you in the right direction. You might consider taking a look through this thread. Endy_'s currently in Van and has been happy with a lot of the suggestions he's gotten. I believe there's a link to his previous visit which has some input about Lumiere and Tojo's. Good luck.

  7. Glad to hear it - pest infestations are indicative of overall unsanitary conditions.

There's also an online form and email address here:

    http://www.vch.ca/environmental/contact.htm

Thanks for the link, I tried calling but as expected they're closed on the weekends. I filed a complaint online and asked for them to contact me for more details.

nice choice of dishes, panda. i like getting those (at other hk-style cafes). i haven't been to honolulu on kingsway in ages...is that the one that's in the same strip mall complex as london drugs? i've always thought that the cambodian/vietnamese restaurant across from honolulu cafe was the danger zone. it's open 24 hours, and looks like they never clean the floor. yuck. it's ironic that you find the cockroach in the somewhat cleaner-looking restaurant across from it.

Yeah, that's the one. The place doesn't look like a questionable place to eat, guess you really can't tell.

I would've much rather seen it on the floor than in the food. I was joking with my sister that it would've been funny if we had actually ate there. Then the other patrons would've seen me screaming and spitting. Not to mention my mom's gagging noises.

  8. Worst case scenario at a restaurant, you find something disgusting in your food. Today I got some take-out from Honolulu, baked seafood on rice, baked seafood spaghetti, seafood fried rice and an egg and cheese sandwich.

All of it was pretty good and after finishing most of the spaghetti, my sister who was picking out the mushrooms for me picked something that wasn't a mushroom. It was a cockroach. She calmly said "Oh, a cockroach." Me and my mom thought she was joking until she blotted the sauce off and revealed our unwelcome guest. This was right after I had put a spoonful of fried rice into my mouth, bad timing. My immediate reaction was to spit everything out. There was some screaming, no tears although I was crying on the inside.

We called them right away and took back the food. They apologized and gave a full refund along with a bag of Valentine Hershey Kisses. Despite this I don't think I'll be able to eat there again. Not sure if I'm being too sensitive about this but for those who think this is as gross as I do you might want to avoid going for a while.

Oh and sorry, I didn't take a picture. I was trying my best at this point not to throw-up and taking a macro shot of the guy would've had me running to the toilet.

  9. I tried the brownie recipe found in Bo Friberg's book. I kinda had to guess a bit with the conversions. You can see a picture of them here. Had to play around with the baking time too since I used a different sized pan than the one specified in the book.

Thanks for the recipes and input, I'm gonna have to have some sort of brownie bake-off at home. More input and recipes are appreciated .

  10. I don't have much experience with brownies, I've only made a single batch of brownies made with cocoa and 2 batches of brownies made with melted dark chocolate. A lot of recipes seem to be split between these two key chocolatey ingredients. I found that I liked the melted chocolate batch better, they had a better texture in my opinion but it could've just been a difference in recipe strengths.

I wanted to know what everyone else likes better, brownies made with cocoa or with melted chocolate. Another side question is about chocolate brands. What brands are good for baking? Thanks in advance.

  11. Shaktea was great last time I was there. Tried there Gyokuro and picked up a bag of their Kukicha. Very helpful and informative, need to pop by for a tea refill.

The Tea Store is Park Royal was also good, bought my teapot from there and the owner popped in 2 samples of tea. I live in Burnaby so it's a bit out of the way for me.

I bought some Gyokuro from Muzi (formerly Infuze I think) pricey, but that's what you get for Gyokuro.

I've only bought Roobios from the tea shop down in Granville Island and I've tried their Jasmine, but none of their Japanese teas. I'll have to try some on my next visit.

I'd suggest trying a cup while you're there to find which kind you like. If it's health related the more delicate teas that require longer steeping times will probably be better since you can steep them longer and get more flavour and other good stuff out of them. Gyokuro can be a bit pricey if it's consumed in large quantities everyday, a nice Sencha might be a good alternative. Good luck.

  12. Went to Kombiniya today and found Calorie Mate near the check out counter.  They have fruit, cheese, and chocolate flavours.  Price is $3.76 (plus tax).  I'll probably buy it from jbox.com since the value is so low that taxes aren't usually charged to my parcels.

Was at Konbiniya yesterday and remembered this post but I guess I'm too late. I remember trying cheese a long time ago when a relative brought some from Korea. Maybe I'll check jbox for some Umainbou.

  13. Homemade is always best, but the closest to that has been at Don Francesco's on Burrard.  Being Italian,  I fancy myself a tiramisu connoisseur, and theirs the best I've had in any restaurant.

Yeah, I guess homemade will always be best. I should stop being lazy and trying making it one of these days. Glad to hear that I can rely on Don Francesco's in the mean time.

  14. Think it's a little late to ask. But there was this bakery that I liked to go to for their giant cheese sticks on Lonsdale Quay. It seems that they were replaced some time ago by a Cobs. Does anyone know which place I'm talking about, it was a pretty big bakery on the ground level, not that far from the washroom.

  15. Just ran downstairs to see the brand that my mom bought and it's Korean . I'm no expert when it comes to soy milk since I dislike it. But from what you've said about the beany taste and the shorter shelf life I would guess the Chinese brand would be better in regard to nutrient value. I've heard from some people who like soy milk that the sweeter/tastier kinds usually lack a lot of the nutrients that soy milk is supposed to deliver. Just a guess though.

  16. Great topic, I'm also interested in the best tiramisu that Vancouver has to offer. I've tried the tiramisu at Marcello's I think they called it something else like "Mascarpone Dessert" or something like that. Very good but also very small, you'll need to order 3 or 4 to satisfy a tiramisu craving.

I've also tried the tiramisu from Sweet Revenge also quite good and served in a glass, levelled, dusted with cocoa and topped with a fanned out strawberry. They seem to have change their glass but it tastes about the same.

I didn't quite like the tiramisu from Ganache it was lacking in mascarpone and instead of lady fingers it had pieces of cake.

I also recall having some at Anton's. A huge portion but can't really comment on the taste, I was so full of pasta I can't remember.

There are some other places that I've probably tried but I can't remember at the moment. I'll looking forward to trying the Wazubee's tiramisu since I like their burgers and garlic mayo.

Hope more people list some places to try some tiramisu .
