  1. Next time hit the original blanco cafe for old school mex/tex, quite possibly the best chile con carne I have ever had the pleasure to have on enchiladas. No alcohol served but they did allow me to bring in some beer.

Rosarios for really good touristy type tex/mex.

I was going to suggest the same two places! I love Blanco (on Blanco). Very humble joint. And Rosarios is not bad.

  2. I was in Houston this week and I sought out a "Midwest deep fried breaded pork tenderloin sandwich". I actually found one at the Heights Camphouse Bar-B-Q in Houston's Heights area with a little bit of Google sluething. It was on the menu as a "pork loin burger" so I was a little apprehensive about what was to come would imply what we think is a ground up pork fritter. I told the server what I was looking for and she concurred it might be what I was looking for. The cook volunteered that it was like a chicken fried steak but pork and with no gristle. Yes! that is what I wanted. Still the apprehension because my experience was the farther you ventured from Indiana the more bizarre or not quite right the sandwich would be. I am happy to report they hit it just right. It was indeed a very good sandwich. It held its own with the best in the country. My cousins, expatriate Hoosiers living in Houston since 1960 were ecstatic that such a sandwich could be found in Texas. Try one and you will wonder why you put up with chicken fried steak. OK, OK, you have cattle, lots of cattle. The Midwest is hog dominant. I posted a picture of the sandwich on my deep fried breaded pork tenderloin fun web site along with some of the reptutedly best in the country...

I wonder if any such authentic pork tenderloin sandwiches are available in Austin? Culver's has 'em, but I'd love to find one in a less fast foody place.

  3. Cross Tyler Florence off my fave list.  Caught a couple episodes of How to Boil Water recently...  he is a camera hog, and not very gracious to his co-host.

It seems like the woman on the show does less and less. A saw one episode where she sits on a stool most of the time and just comments.

I think that's the idea. She looks pretty good sitting on a stool.

  4. Actually, I've had better enchiladas outside of Austin for a while. We've become complacent and, as a city, choose to patronise Chuy's and Trudy's at the expense of edible food. Also, the wide-spread vegetarian culture when applied to Tex-Mex food just doesn't cut it. I want lard in them beans, and chicken stock in my rice...

You might be on to something with the vegetarian thing. I too am pretty disappointed by the tex mex options, in North Austin at least. I live north, so do not get to all of the places in South Austin, of which there are many.

Just noticed this on a site reviewing Maudie's, an Austin tex mex chain. Confirms your theory!

"The only item that's a little out of the ordinary is the beans, which are 100% fat free and vegetarian."

  6. My wife and I have an extended weekend trip to San Francisco scheduled the first weekend of June.

I have stacked a massive schedule of restaurants and would like to photo-document our dining experiences for egullet.

I have tried on occasion, very unsuccessfully, taken photos of meals in restaurants http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?showtopic=79589 (SiseFromms pics were posted from what we could salvage from my work).

The problems I have are a combination of perceived nerdiness, and difficulty with taking photos without a flash in low light situations.

I feel terrible snapping flash photos in restaurants with other folks around me and my party.

I have a really good micro size digital camera that takes great photos when all things line up.

Anyone have any instructional experience, advice on protocol and the mechanics of getting a few good non obtrusive snaps during dining?

    Shaun

What I do, and it works great if your camera has this feature, is turn on the "rapid fire" mode (called "continuous mode" on my little Canon), turn off the flash, turn on the macro mode (if you are shooting close to the plate), and fire away. Just hold the camera as still as possible and hold the shutter button down until you get 5 or 10 shots in rapid succession. I guarantee that at least one will be sharp. I do this for all the pictures on my website (see sig or profile).

    Have fun!
