  1. This is off the topic of Italian restauarants in Lower Westchester (and I think Scaramella's is representative of them in general - competent in the basics, but nothing spectacular), but on the original topic of the best restaurant in Yonkers, I would nominate Ya Hala, a Middle Eastern (Lebanese I think) place on Broadway about 2 miles north of the Bronx border. I'm not an expert on Middle Eastern, but their hummus & falafel is tasty and their grilled meats are very well done - the chicken in particular is very tender. Plus, even though it's in a sketchy area, it's not a hole in the wall; the dining room is OK to spend an hour in.
  2. Not much to say except "word." Sassy's is the best. I don't think I've ever had anything there besides the cheeseburgers and cajun/garlic/sweet potato fries, but I've never felt the need for anything else. I'm not real fond of that neighborhood's food options, but that is a great hot spot with Papaya King & Sassy's right next to each other.
  3. Cap'n Crunch cuts your mouth and you bleed into the bowl? What the hell kind of Cap'n Crunch do you eat?!
  4. Actually, the law used to be that active duty military personnel could purchase alcohol on military bases. In the early-mid 80s, MADD lobbied to have that amended so that the relevant state drinking laws would be in effect: TITLE 10 , Subtitle A , PART IV , CHAPTER 159 , Sec. 2683. So, your concerns have been addressed in the past, but I guess the feeling was that the lives that would be presumably saved by further curtailing "underaged" drinking outweighed the moral "rightness" of being old enough to drink if you're old enough to die for your country.
  5. Agree with you on the burgers, but that decor is definitely not 1950s. With the wood paneling and conical metal lights with little holes in them, it's pure 1972. I think they did some sort of big redecoration in the early 70s and never looked back. I didn't know about the pies - I'll have to try those at some point.
  6. This is a reply to an old old post, but I just wanted to second Steven's praise for steakhouse hamburgers. I've been over to the Smith and Wollensky's on 52nd & 6th for lunch a couple of times and their burger is pretty #### good for บ.95. High quality meat, charred & juicy, fresh bun, a mess of thin french fries - I'm a fan. I admit that I prefer it with cheddar and bacon; I hope this doesn't make me some sort of hamburger infidel for "adulterating" the meat or something like that. On this topic, where can I get a decent burger and fries to go within 5-6 blocks of my office (I'm in the old Continental Illinois building on 53rd & Madison)? Do any of those hot food delis in the area cook an especially good burger?
