  1. Going way, way out on a limb here....some sort of dried fish?
  2. I suspect you're already aware of the Iowa Ornithologists' Union, but if not, they are a great bunch of folks that can steer you in the right direction as to birds and, probably good chow. I've been a sit on my ass at home birder for many, many years. Project Feeder Watch is my winter salvation I'll be following your trip both for birds and food.
  3. May be a silly idea but maybe you could interest the book club readers in some of the popular books that combine cooking and mysteries? There are several series or stand alones that were popular when I was still the "Library Lady." Diane Mott Davidson is an author that was probably one of the most popular The recipes aren't all that complicated or exotic but may at least spark some food conversations among the group. The genre is a big one and growing quickly. Might be fun to cook or bake something from each book to share at the next meeting! I know from experience how hard it can be moving and not fitting in. Five years after moving here I was invited to appear on a panel to represent a newcomer. Yikes.
  4. Might make an interesting reward for students getting A's in sex education! Always nice to have a goal that you can see.
  5. Many years ago we were camping west of Deming at the City of Rocks State Park. The rocks were full of grinding holes and we were amazed. How I wish I had been in to forging when we camped our way across the country! At that point in my life it was all about Hamburger Helper and Jiffy-Pop. Wasn't until I found my first morel mushrooms in Iowa that I understood why people get so excited about it.
  6. When my kids were little, they had these itty bitty mini flight bags. I used to fill them with dry cereal when we went some place. When they were eating, they were quiet and not bugging me or touching stuff in stores. Their all time favorite cereal was Crispy Critters. Husband and I always called it the Refugees from the Forest Fire stuff. Not very PC, but we are easily amused.
  7. Only one little stinkin' inch? And in the Yukon too? Boy is my memory going. But I digress, must check for messages on my Little Orphan Annie Secret Decoder Ring. I ate a lot of crappy cereal for one dumb inch. My parents put one over on me. Told me it was part of my future vast estate...
  8. I would love to check out my square foot but seeing as how I have never paid a cent of property taxes, I'm not sure if I should Also I heard a rumor that there may be a warrant out for my arrest as a suspected cereal killer
  9. Why yes, yes I do. I will claim it an Iowa's northern most outpost. Every New Year's Day,I shall sit on my new land and eat a large bowl of frosted flakes while gazing across the Bering Straits at Putin riding shirtless on his steed.
  10. LOL, I would almost always get some crappy thing as a toy that required inserting tab A into slot A or bending tab B on dotted line and folding over tab B. What four year old has a clue as to what that means. And yup, it was always in the worst kind of cereal. Kind of a wonder the cat didn't die or OD on the stuff I slipped him under the table. At least with Cracker Jacks, even if the prize sucked, you got something good to eat. The coolest thing I ever got and I don't recall the details was a deed to a square foot of Alaska. I don't suppose it had gold or oil but I could dream. My luck it was where the Palin's dumped their garbage or something.
  11. I think the best book on the subject of food faddists is The Nuts Among the Berries. It was published in, I think, 1977 but worth searching out if the topic interests you. I also seem to recall that the author did an updated version but have not read it as yet.
  12. For a funny look at Dr. Kellogg and the rest of the goofy ones, check out the spoof film. The Road to Wellville. Made in 1994 and staring Anthony Hopkins. Pretty funny in a warped sort of way.

    What is it?

I don't have a clue unless it might be one of the nests of the rare and endangered oven wasps.
  14. Those photos are what the heart of Mexico is to me. All the vibrant colors and inviting food displays just call to me. In your last group of photos, the restaurant has what I think was a hat or coat rack. It was painted every color of the rainbow and more. We have been to restaurants in Mazatlan where the chairs are painted like that. I loved the idea so much that I bought a miniature wooden chair and did a Mexican paint job on it. It hangs on the wall and lots of memories stop by and sit on it. I am really enjoying my trip down memory lane as I travel with you.
  15. This is just awesome. I suspect some of feel almost like midwives. This has been such an amazing journey to travel. So glad I got to take part in it. See you in St Louis?
  16. I have been there and agree the food is wonderful. Much different and more complex then what many people consider to be Mexican food. I would gladly trade places with you this very day. We have reached our "high" of 14 degrees but, like you, are enjoying a very blue sky. I would much rather settle in and learn about a place in depth than do the tour thing and just skim the tops off. Looking forward to more posts and pictures.
  17. Used to call it "beef melt" when I was growing up. Cut them up for cat food. Bloody damn piece of meat it was. And the cat was a miserable spoiled thing. Too good for anything that came in a can.....
  18. For pounding meat, I always like "If I Had a Hammer"
  19. I have seen three cleavers used to juggle with. Probably not the best career move though. I agree, Amazon customer service rocks.
  20. People sure are different. Hubby and I have talked about which type of food we could live on forever and both agree it would be Mexican. I grew up in Los Angeles so it was part of my childhood. Hubby, poor guy, grew up in Tiny Town Iowa and never even had a pizza let alone a taco until he joined the Navy after high school. When he fell for the stuff it started a life long love affair. I so enjoy reading about The Ladies Who Lunch. Used to do that with my co-workers and it was often an adventure. Glad you and Kerry Beal have so much fun doing it now.

    Low-salt recipes

I love the salt free flavorings from Penzeys Not all are spicy but they are all good. They have an excellent website and also outstanding customer service. And I so agree about watching that high blood pressure. They don't call it the silent killer for no reason.

    Dinner 2016 (Part 1)

Your dishes and serving pieces are so beautiful that I wouldn't not be adverse to eating Alpo from them. But would much prefer the amazing meals you make.
  23. I really thought I had this memory buried but this thread made it pop to the surface. There is a Chinese restaurant in a near-by town that features a buffet. It had been two or three years since we had been there so we were looking forward to going. We made our way down the rows of good smelling food and were soon sitting, enjoying our meal. I noticed a woman making her choices but in a strange way. She actually reached into the serving pans with her fingers and pulled out morsels to taste. I could almost read her thoughts...."Oh a nice cube of pineapple, just a nibble of that mushroom...and that General Tso's looks so tasty that I must try it" I think it was the smacking of her lips as she sucked off the sweet and sour sauce that got me the most. While all this was going on. the employees jut stood and watched her. All I know is that we have never been back and I tend to size up people who are in the buffet line ahead of me.
  24. The February issue of Sunset Magazine has a great article about the beans of Mexico. And guess who is featured.....our own Steve Sando. Nice write up and lots and lots of recipes. I have been a Sunset subscriber for more than 25 years and I finally :"know" someone in it. Cool Beans as they say. I hope someone with more skills than I have can post a link.
