  1. Off topic so I'll keep it short. My Credit Union has a machine that counts change. It is also able to spot Canadian coins and sets them aside. I just assumed they were all like that...

    Carp Roe?

Okay, here's my dumb question and it won't be the last. What is the difference between carp and koi? I have the impression that koi wear better clothes and carp are at the bottom of the pecking order. We have huge grass carp in the pond but have no idea where they fit on the fish family tree.
  3. Guess they weren't much good against smallpox and measles either. Saw a funny on the link that was posted. A loaf of very moldy bread. It was titled "A Redneck's Chia Pet". I really need to grow one for a certain BIL of mine.
  4. Oh yes, we are watching. In fact Friday nights are planned around the show. I "might" even go so far as to take the phone off the hook. I agree, it is so calming compared to the frantic competition shows on the food channels. Makes me want a cup of tea and I don't even like the stuff much!
  5. I knew your cooking was amazing but had no idea it was so good that people would covet your garbage! Wow
  6. I was amazed to see the artichoke in bloom. Am I right to assume that it is more of a centerpiece or decoration then something to eat at that stage? I would love to have one in the middle of a table. What a conversation starter! As to wild thistles, I really hope gfron1 will rise to the challenge once he starts to forage in the area. Seems like something that is right up his alley.
  7. Wow, the sauerkraut caught me off guard. So glad you are sharing these.
  8. We have signs advertising Burmese...no wait, they say Burma Shave. This is a really small town! Yes, Kerry, hurry home so you and Anna can head North!
  9. Thank you for letting me go along with you. The trip has caused me to rethink so much of what I thought I knew about Moscow. This is exactly why I love this place!
  10. Food looks wonderful. What caught my eye was the silverware. I am using the same set here in Tiny Town Iowa. It really is a small world isn't it?

    Dinner 2016 (Part 5)

When our daughter was in collage, she went through a rather nasty break up. Her best friend tried to make her feel better by saying."At least you kept your sense of humor." That was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw your wonderful photo. The saying has become part of family lore.
  12. Just curious, do you have children?

    Dinner 2016 (Part 5)

What a lovely thing for you and your granddaughter to be able to do. I can just imagine the lifelong memories you are both creating on your Mondays. Your meal looks wonderful but the fact of sharing it with her takes it to a whole new level.
  14. My husband has a photo of Porto as his screen saver. Your pictures will make him drool. I suspect you have the world's most traveled rooster too. Spotting him is like playing Where's Waldo with a cool chicken.
  15. Forgive me, I was in my smart ass mode!
  16. This probably won't count but......gather acorns, feed them to a heritage breed of hog. Butcher hog in the fall and feast on the end result of eating acorns, however indirectly it may be. La Quercha, the producers of world famous pork products buys acorns from farmers in Iowa and nearby areas. These hogs are bespoke. I think that Mario Batali buys one every year. I grew up thinking eating one would probably kill me unless I boiled in about a twenty changes of water and said my prayers. Sorry to wander a bit off topic...
  17. I hope your daughter will let you continue to be the voice of the faire here. Like the others, I have enjoyed hearing about your role and the amazing amount of prep work it required. You can sat back and become the wise elder now! Well earned title I'm sure.
  18. Once you get on their mailing list, you will get nearly an ad per day. We joke that it isn't an official day until the Thermoworks offers pops into your email box. And, no, I would never block them because the sales are great and many of the ads include recipes and tips for using their products, Plus, how can you not love a company that includes a tiny package of Jelly Bellys with each order?
  19. Good to know. I too have a daughter that is wonderful about finding tempting food so I will have her grab a package or MORE, She shops at Costco often. Imagine, fricos at my fingertips on demand!
  20. Don't look, but Amazon has them. The price will knock you over sad to say.

    Dong Art

Love those. Almost as if there is a Chinese version of Grandma Moses only better.
  22. I found him again but this time in a rural publication called Farm Show. A nice article about him is in the Money-Making Ideas to Boost Farm Income. He is nestled between an article about mounting a hayloft on top of a country house and one about Hungarian sheep having amazing horns. Yup, it is one of those "something" for everyone type publications. Glad he is reaching a new potential audience! Here's a link www.farmshow.com Vol. 40, no 3 page 9
  23. Oh, back in the day when I was a book reviewer for a local chain of papers I would get review copies quite often. Fun to read and then read the final version and notice the changes. I still have a a few of them somewhere. Book packets usually included a big, glossy photo of the author, a long bio and a list of appearances if they were known yet. Congratulations on all you have accomplished.
  24. I want to share an interesting book I am reading. I'm posting here rather than in the cookbook topic because it is about gardening. The title is Founding Gardeners by Andrea Wulf. This is a quote from the back of the book. "Founding Gardeners is an exploration of that obsession, telling the story of the revolutionary generation from the unique perspective of their lives as gardeners, plant collectors and farmers." Wulf tells how Washington, Jefferson, Adams and Franklin not only shaped our nation but how their love for all things garden related also had an influence on the outcome. The author has done a great job of mixing grass and grass roots so to speak. Off topic, but the same author also wrote what I consider the bet book of the year so far. The invention of nature, the story of Alexander von Humboldt. I enjoyed both of the books a great deal.

    Aldi

Yes, it is, especially watching the Cardinals play so far! It is far too easy to pick up vibes from the others in line. I should spend more time reading headlines from the trashy magazines while waiting in line. Plenty of shits and giggles there. My favorite little taco joint buys their chips at Aldis. Found that out after I said they tasted like real homemade ones. Given the right atmosphere, your mind can belive about anything.
