  1. I would have been tempted to ask for a "to go" box, pack up the meal and leave. And like Shelby, don't want to be watched as I eat. My inner slob tends to come out!
  2. He didn't get to be worth 20 million by not taking a big slice of the pie! For all his "shucks, I"m just a country boy" patter, he is one sharp operator. Maybe everyone is the audience will get an autographed bow tie?
  3. Yup, I remember and also "I can't get no satisfaction". But can't wait to travel along with you!
  4. I have a basic fear of a product that ends in the letters "roid" Add "toaster" and it gets scary. I'm sure it will be a hot seller for a short while and within a year GoodWill will have stacks of them next to all the other once trick pony appliances. Now if it made a decent piece of basic toast, it might survive but even that doesn't seem to be the case here. One use however. for couple who are mad at each other and not speaking, cryptic messages might be left on their toast. I can see sitting down to breakfast and reading...GET OUT or DROP DEAD between the blobs of jelly. Or the old classic, YOU'RE TOAST
  5. Oh I can just hear my smart refrig. telling me that mold is growing on the sour cream and the lettuce has terminal wilt to say nothing of eggs old enough to hatch. Damn thing sounds like a smart ass. not just smart. And what the mayo does in the dark has nothing to do with me as long as it avoids contact with the Miracle Whip That would be a case of cross dressing I suspect.

    Mystery Ingredients

Is it Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors?
  7. I just rechecked and Amazon is selling Goya brand huitlacoche for under ten bucks. I first had it as an omelet filling and once past the shock of it, liked it. Farmers' around here call it corn smut and would never, ever think about putting it in their mouths. More for me
  8. Sigh, back to real life now. But what fun while it lasted. Thanks for letting us tag along again.
  9. Your cupcakes are works of art. Perfect illustration of something being almost too pretty to eat. Notice I said "almost". I would gobble one in a heartbeat.

    Haunting Hunan

Let me add my thanks to all the others. It was an amazing trip for us all.
  11. Ah yes, ear of meatloaf, an old family favorite. Last one to the table gets bunny butt loaf. This is such a fun topic.
  12. Gave me a fright.....at first glance I thought it was The Donald. Looked again and realized, while the skin shade was perfect, the hair was a few shades off...whew.
  13. I'm thinking you should name the entire thing. "The Tales of Mother F*****g Goose! It did make for good reading so not all was lost.

Here's a trick to knowing what belongs to the sheep family and what belongs to the goat family. All sheep have downward tails, like the letter "p" in their names. Goats have upstanding tails like the letter "t" in their names. Now just hope the question comes up in a trivia game!

    Dinner 2016 (Part 6)

Last week was our county fair. The beef, pork and sheep producers each had a food stand. Guess which line was the shortest? Yup the sheep line. They sell lamb, not sheep and it is so mild that we carry a little container of Penzy's Greek seasonings to kick it up. This year they tried gyros and they were tasty. Not sure if this place is ready for something as "exotic" as pita bread. Now last year they really colored outside the lines by selling goat burgers. We liked them but they didn't show up this year. We get our meat from a local locker and they often have lamb and you can order custom cuts of it. Not cheap, but I know where every bit of meat they process came from. Same processor supplies all the meat for all three food stands at the fair. If we had someone to share it with, I'd like to buy a whole spring lamb and have it butchered. Interesting factoid, at one time Davis Co., Iowa where we live, was the largest sheep producing county in the nation. We also produced a world champion sheep shearer years ago who was the consultant for the movie, The Thornbirds for all things sheep related. And it all went to hell when the coyotes decided there was plenty of lambs for them
  16. I think that chop suey is an American creation too.
  17. And this insipid item that is pushed at Iowa's Welcome Centers, corn cob jelly. Once we had indoor plumbing, we had to find another use for all those corn cobs...
  18. And I would offer that honestly American creation...ta da, The Fortune Cookie.
  19. How about cornbread and the variations...corn pone, johnny cake, hoe cakes, hush puppies ?
  20. Back in the day when we grew a large garden, I was one of the first in the area to grow zucchini. Can you believe that I actually sold the extras to the local grocery store. I felt so damn cocky to go in the store with food and walk out with cash. The produce manager was a real flake and didn't know diddly about his stock. In fact I convinced him that once an avocado got the least bit soft, it was no longer prime and he would make them waaaay down for me. I was "nice" enough to take them off his hands. Great fun while it lasted and I sure do miss him.

Ha, that's the same line I used to get from my Nana when she would take me to Clifton's Cafeteria in Los Angeles. I wanted to point to every single item and she had to put the brakes on me. Fun times. I'm easy to please, just give me the entire steak and stand back.
  22. Nice article about the show on Slate today. I didn't realize that the only prize the winners get in a fancy cake stand. And that is just another reason to love the show!
  23. I have the twin to your mug sitting on our bar but filled with pens and pencils. My view, while eating cold pizza for breakfast, was of our pond and a bunch of wood ducks. Females are molting right now so they are just hanging around waiting for new feathers to grow.
  24. Those people are so wonderful that they have the power to create their own weather on demand. I strongly suspect they fart rainbows and I love them for that.
