  1. I'm looking for two completely different items:

    1) bulk baking soda - I don't need a 25lb bag, but I'd like a largish quantity, say a kilo, hopefully more economical than buying little boxes;

    2) I buy bulk beans in the Punjabi Market, and they're very clean and reasonably priced, but the stores I shop at don't have several varieties I use regularly, including split green peas, black and pinto beans, etc. Can anyone recommend a store that sells bulk beans that's known to be clean and free of six legged hitchhikers?

I'm in North-East Vancouver and on the bus, so location is somewhat important, but any suggestion will be carefully considerd. Please and thank you!!

  2. I have recently found out that amazon.com has increased their fees on shipping items to Canada. This obviously closes the gap on the costs of books between amazon.com and amazon.ca, but I personally find it discriminatory against Canadian customers.

It has been a well-known fact that in the last couple of years, prior to this shipping rate increase, and even prior to the dollars being at par, it cost appreciably less to buy books through amazon.com than amazon.ca. Of all the options available to Amazon in saving their Canadian business, I personally think they have chosen the worst. For sure, they have successfully deterred me from purchasing from their US site, but I'm not going to their Canadian site as a result. I'll just take my business elsewhere.

I'd very much like to hear what other Canadians think about this.

  3. I had no idea that there was candied rutabaga in the fruit mix. It's almost bizarre...

what fruit did you think those brightly colored lime green and florescent red chunks of stuff came from? the rutebega is like a filler, to keep the overall cost down. I think there is some fruit in there, but i don't know what ratio.

Didn't there used to be a Dan-D-Pak store in Marpole? bet they have lots of interesting dried fruits.

  4. It is that time of year again.  Anyone with stollen reports?

Last year I bought the Four Seasons version which was excellent - are they offering stollen again this year?

My favorite stollen last year was the 4 seasons. I just called, and the person answering the phone said they are not selling them this year!

Thanks for checking that out, even though the answer is disappointing. Any chance of Les Amis getting into the baking business?

We used to do alot of baking for work when we were on 10th Ave, but not much anymore, except for ourselves. We've got lots of good recipes in our back pocket, so perhaps one day in the new store on Hastings...but that's a ways off. Allison suggested she might make some Stollen for the family.

  6. It wouldn't be Xmas eve dinner for us without having Tourtiere and a special bottle of wine. This year we'll have it with some Oka as always, maybe some Mont d'Or, antipasto and perhpas we'll try some Duchy tomato chutney on the side.

We make our own tourtiere. Do others make their own, or do you buy it locally?

  7. No leaf lard at Oyama, neither Armando's. Armando's told me I'd likely have to go to a slaughter house.

    Thanks!

    Try VCC butcher department

Joe, I think that doesn't exist any more... VCC shut down their meat cutting program in 2002. The only meat cutting program still running in BC is at Thompson Rivers in Kamloops.

Re leaf lard, I'd ask Dave at Windsor Meats.

    I guess it's obious that I haven't been there for a while...
