  1. I agree with Endy' re: Verses (Kitchener), but Langdon Hall is good as well. If you are in the area and going to Stratford, I suggest The Old Prune... Re: seeing some of the outdoors--the Elora Gorge is very lovely (Elora is between Guelph and Waterloo). Unfortunately, I don't know about the restaurants (it's been a while since I last ate there--I remember a mediocre meal and lousy service).
  2. It's really amazing how what seem like minor nuance changes can change the show. There's the language issue (what she probably would have called a spring onion or green onion, she called a scallion) and the measurement issue (imperial measures and I'm not sure if she's weighing things out in this one--it's been a couple of weeks since I saw an episode). I think her speaking style changed as well--the voice sounds more forced and less natural...less like a conversation and more like a presenter...The show's presentation is different...is it shot in HD? I read somewhere that the US station has all shows shot in HD now...that could account for a change in the look of the show. I know my bf made a snarky comment about all the product placement in her new show (all the Nigellaware)...nice to know she cooks with it, but he thought it was a bit much. I should check out her boards and see what the fans are saying.
  3. I must admit that I thought it was just me...The show has been Americanised and I think has lost a little of what made her previous series fun to watch. I wouldn't be surprised if the American sponsors "requested" some formatting changes for what they thought would pull in more viewers. It's not the first time a good formula has been made...different...the first Harry Potter is an example. j
  4. I won't be able to watch it until later-- TFE is PVRing it for me. I got to meet her on Friday when she did the book signing in Toronto -- absolutely lovely and very kind and patient. I know she has her detractors because of her looks and the way her shows are shot. I think it's pretty obvious that she's well aware of the foodporn aspect of her shows and she's pretty tongue-in-cheek about it. I love the fact that she's really bright and it shows in her writing, but not in an "I'm smarter than you" kind of way... j
  5. Hi--jayt90 told me of your post. It is a lovely book--the introduction gives you a good idea as to what Edna was like. Just one teeny correction...the Laurier site lists the book as being due out in November.
  6. Thanks jayt90. I've posted my experiences here on my blog. She told me that Food That Really Schmecks will be reissued in November; I've just confirmed it on the Laurier site..
  7. Edna was an amazing woman. My very dear friend was her neighbour at Sunfish Lake (her home). After years of him suggesting that I meet her (he was convinced we'd get on well), I finally screwed up my courage and had dinner with her in May. She was so...sparkly...and warm and funny and interested and interesting. We had dinner again a few weeks ago and in the days before her stroke we set up another dinner next week. I've drafted an obit for Canada Eats and something for my own blog. I can't read them with clear eyes. When they are up, I'll post a note.
  8. I collect books--of all genres. I'm also a completionist... WRT cookbooks...I think I started off with books I thought were generalist tomes, and then went to ingredient or meal-specific ones, and then authors who were familiar to me (usually through TV). Now, I look to fill voids and/or travel substitutes...Kitchen of Light, Paris in a Basket are examples of the travel substitutes...I'm also likely to look at a book that a blogger has succesffully experimented with. One thing I'm noticing is I really don't want books that have tonnes of photographs. Yes, they are nice, but I'd rather see the effort put into well-written recipes that work. Right now I'm trying very hard to NOT buy any new books...which means my purchases have decreased to one every few weeks. I'm trying to be choosier with what I pick up...that said, there are a couple of authors I will pick up if I notice a new book is out. Mind you, I've signed on as a cookbook reviewer for a new online foodie mag, so I'm getting one free cookbook a month...which isn't helping my groaning shelves. One of these days I'll have to do a major weeding... j
  9. I've only eaten at Lick's (Burlington) a couple of times and I really wasn't that impressed either. One of my colleagues goes on and on about it and will do the hour-plus drive to satisfy a craving. I thought the buns were too big and bready, but I liked their veggie burger more than their beef burger. j
  10. I wouldn't really call it cooking...I've caught it in passing...what she does is give kids things to taste test...her part of the show probably lasts a minute at most. That said, she seems to have the right personality to handle kids.
  11. Well...I'd be very surprised if I saw another survey. I think the "entry form" *was* the survey. We've helped them with their programming decisions by saying "37% of our respondants said they were females between the ages of 40-45, divorced with three kids younger than 19; they have digital TV with PVRs, mobile phones, don't read the newspaper, but spend 7 hours a week on the computer; they live in neighbourhoods with a median income of $48,000/year and take the bus to work"--now they'll find advertisers who want these people as consumers/clients and pitch them. I found it interesting what professions they won't allow in their fold--pretty much anyone who can see through their questions and know how to manipulate answers and results... Just me being cynical j
  12. Hope I'm not too late... Here's what I know about Waterloo Region: KW Multicultural Festival 24-25 June Blues, Brews and BBQs from 10-13 Aug There's a Greek food Festival that happens but I don't know exactly when. I know Guelph as a Ribfest, but it seems to be the travelling one that hits most large and mid-sized communities in the summer (same vendors set up in Guelph, Waterloo and London). Raspberry Sour usually posts lists of Canadian foodie events on The Sour Patch
  13. I love this ... kinda sorta reminds me of some of my own horrible dates Thanks for writing and posting this.
  14. It's interesting this thread came up now. Someone who reads eGullet recently an anonymous comment on my blog about how eGullet "is very corrupt (yadda yadda yadda)" and then suggested I (and probably the 107 people who read my natterings) go to some other foodie discussion site. I debated removing the comment as I thought he/she/it was quite rude to do this (if you are going to use my space as a billboard, you should have the decency to use your name)... I decided to leave it on--the post is no longer on the main page and will, like the rest of it, be buried in obscurity. Removing the post may cause more problems than it's worth at this time. Anyway re: posting anonymously... I can easily see both sides of it--if you're going to say something, then say it with your own name—own up to what you say. But I've had the luxury of a fan/weirdo dig through a volume of Usenet posts to piece together where I worked (I do commend the sheer tenacity of that), call 411 for my office number and then call me over and over again. The only reason he didn't get me at home is that I don't live in the city where I work, I never post my surname and my phone number is unlisted. I am one of my company's spokespeople, so whatever I say under my own name might be seen as representative of the company stance, regardless of the subject, so I have to be aware of what I say, where I say it and when I say it. Unfortunately, some people don’t understand the distinction between work-me and me-me, resulting in off-hour calls to my parents (their number is listed) from the public, looking for me, because the caller took issue with something at my office and couldn’t wait until office hours to ream me out. The caller then gets upset that my mum won’t give out my home number to some lunatic they’ve never heard of who calls for me.
  15. Do you believe that this new approach, which emphasizes quality, will cause some naysayers to trust the McDonald's brand? Would an emphasis on quality products and ingredients make you more inclined to try McDonald's over other outlets? Will this still the "nattering nabobs of negativism?" Your opinions? ←
