  2. My girlfriend and I are going to Portugal on Sunday, and while reading through this thread I've realised that I'm far behind on my planning.

The planning tends to fall on me more than not, but we don't plan that much in general. I like to use guides and recommendations for restaurant visits, and that's the total we plan.

We are going to be in Portugal from the 6th to the 17th and have so far gotten accommodations for the  6th - 8th in Lisbon, 8th - 10th in Pousada Santa Cristina, on the 11th to 12th (+ a restaurant reservation), the 12th to 13th in Quinta de la Rosa and on the 15th -17th  in Lisbon.

We have a rented car to drive around with and I was wondering if any of the many helpful and knowledgeable people in here could recommend a place to go on the 13th to 15th and also I'd love recommendation for restaurants. We eat just about anything (I more than my girlfriend, but she's rather unpicky as well) , and we want to eat good food rooted in the place where we eat. We would also like to have a restaurant recommendation for the 15th in Lisbon as we'll be celebrating my birthday there.

Also, is there some dishes, simple, traditional, specialities or others that I simply MUST try while in Portugal (I plan on eating seafood and bacalhao at least), and please bear in mind that I plan to write one or more pieces about my trip for a local online magazine (www.upop.no) that I'm a food writer for.

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Regards,

    Morten Båtbukt

For the 15th I'll recomend Restaurante Tavares

In Guincho beach, 20 minutes driving from Penha Longa, Fortaleza do Guincho and more tradicional Porto Santa Maria.

I hope the eGullet members will try the great Takazawa cuisine and make their own minds up!

I've got a table... hope the dinner worth the 500 miles driving...

Once in the region, I would like to go to another restaurant ( in France ). I already know all the good restaurants, in spanish Basque Country .

I'm thinking in Cordeillan Bages. Any other sugestions ?

    Thanks in advance

  5. And, for the 1st time, a portuguese chef.

José Avillez, who worked in the kitchen at El Bulli last year, is now the head chef at Tavares Restaurant in Lisbon. Tavares, is probably the oldest restaurant in town, where, its decadent decor, contrasts with the modern cuisine.

His presentation at Madrid Fusion, will be in the last day, with the name " renovation of the great culinary temples "

  6. I sent my request on the 14th, and haven't heard anything. Maybe no news is good news?

Last year, I received my No, end of November. Good Luck...

What a party pooper (hoping to make El Bulli part of honeymoon in June and haven't heard anything yet).

As late as you receive the e-mail, the chance to get a table increase. But....

My partner had a fantastic red mullet with incredibly fresh mussels, perfectly cooked ratatouille (in 2mm cubes!), and couscous with the most intense mint I have ever tasted. I asked the waiter, who told me he went and got it in Morocco because it was so much better than the local stuff. Tiny leaves = more flavour. Unfortunately, I have no photo - this was a very beautifully presented dish.

I think is this one, no ?

  8. PauloR, thanks for the advice. How can I get to Guincho from Estoril?

    Taxi,( is not expensive).

You can have lunch at Fortaleza do Guincho. Great views from the restaurant at lunch time.

IMO, Fortaleza do Guincho, is the best restaurant, in all Lisbon area.

For dinner , 100 Maneiras restaurant in Cascais, 10 minutes taxi from Estoril.

I hope they were not referring to my photos!  :raz:  Seriously, I would be very curious to hear the story. I suppose that they could be referring to the photos that I posted here, but I certainly didn't derive any financial profit from them. In any case, that is unfortunate news.

I'm sure it was not your photos. I spoke with the waiter about your report in eGullet, and he told me, that was not the same case.

Paulo, I'm glad that you enjoyed L'Esguard. What did you not agree with?

I expect that you will enjoy Alinea as well even though the approach of each restaurant is very different.

My favorite dishes was Odran and Alsos, follow by your favorite Unda.

As you, I found Aprillis the least interesting.

It was not possible to make photos. I was told this was recent decision because one person, used his photos of a meal at L'Esguard, for is own profit.

    Regards

  11. Thank you for your report John. I have my booking at L'Esguard, beginning of June.

it is a unique experience. I expect that you will enjoy it. While I am not sure that it would be the kind of restaurant that I would want (or could afford) to go to every week, it would be a treat to go to every now and again.

I went to L'Esguard last week.

The menu was exactly the same and I agree with doc., in most of it's comments.

This was one of my best meals ever. IMHO, this meal was better than other recent experiences at Can Roca, Fat Duck, Pierre Gagnaire and Mugaritz.

I did not went to El Bulli recently. I can not compare it with L'Esguard. I have a booking for Alinea end of July. I'm very curious about it...
