  1. Some confusion here.. I really wasn't suggesting that Shelora takes us on a tour.. although her advice about Victoria is ofcourse very much appreciated! But when she mentioned a one-day itinerary I was just wondering if Dennis and I could happily spend a day in Victoria without a car...

After all, we are tourists.. it's not so bad doing the touristy thing every now and then.

    Klary,

Sorry 'bout that. It was just my jovial way of saying that based on an educated guess on where Shelora would suggest you visit, a lot of that would require a car.

You'll love Vancouver Island, with or without a car. It's just that without a car you'll be spending most (if not all) time in Victoria. That's not necessarily a bad thing. It's just that there's so much more to see on Vancouver Island, especially from a fodd-lover's point of view. Perhaps another trip?

    A.

and I'll keep on adding to the confusion by editing my own posts

yes, another trip, definitely. I love travel planning but it is also very difficult, deciding where to go and where not to go! There's only so much you can do in 3 weeks

Thanks everybody for thinking along with me. It is a great help!

I, however, would greatly appreciate this one-day itinerary Shelora!

  2. There's also a really nice article on Vancouver Island, specifically, the wineries in "Wine Adventure" magazine. I forgot to post when I originally saw it, but practically half the magazine is devoted to BC. There's also an article on some of the Okanagan wineries. There's a whole article devoted to the Aerie. I don't know if there's anything on their website: www.wamagazine.com (My work blocks anything having to do with wine!) Also a good read and good promotion of the Vancouver Island wineries!

  3. .... I tried to get Chris to go next door with me to get desserts at 1924 Main!

I didn't know this was possible - I thought 1924 Main was strictly a three course prix fixe restaurant at dinner. Can you order dishes there a la carte?

I guess I don't really know... I know at lunch time you can either get 1 course, 2 courses, or 3 courses, so I just assumed you could do that at dinner too. Maybe not?

  4. I'm honestly not sure who the chef was when we went... June 11th, my birthday! It really was an excellent evening, although my standards are probably not as high as yours u.e.!

We had a scallop starter, although I don't remember much about it, the scallops were perfectly cooked and very tasty. I had a potato encrusted halibut, which wasn't the best dish of all time, but still very good... it was a little too filling for me. Chris had, I think, pork tenderloin with a risotto, and it was really excellent... very tender. And, I know, I know, I'm going to get teased for this, but really disappointed in the dessert menu! No inventiveness whatsoever! There was creme brulee, of course, and molten chocolate cake, of course! We did end up getting the molten chocolate cake even though I tried to get Chris to go next door with me to get desserts at 1924 Main! It came with a Guinness ice cream... blech! Not my taste. However, we sat for a very long time nursing our drinks and our waitress brought out a little chocolate crispy candy that was too die for... that should have been on the dessert menu! I had a Ruby Red Metropolitan (I guess the bartender makes her own infused vodkas every night, and Ruby Red was one of the flavors that night) and it was really excellent. It was definitely a lovely birthday evening!

  5. I was just notified that Pacific Grille (on 45 Highway) has closed?

It's going to get harder for independent restaurants to make it, It's seems like the bulk of the cities in the kansas city area are going after the taxes that the the big guys can bring to the board. I know they bring alot to the areas as far as jobs and taxes. I just hate to see a small guy drop that much into a place and have it go under in less that 10 months, but I've seen the big guy go under just as fast. I guess all is fair in food and love.

I toatally agree with you. I 99.99% of the time only go to local independant restaurants. I support the KC Origanals and other locally own places. It just breaks my heart to see all of the chains moving in. My sister just got a house in Piper, and she thinks that the Legends is just the greatest thing ever. I just look around and think, "Where is the local places out here?" Then oh that right they can not afford to move into these spaces. :hmmm:

We were driving around the Legends area on Sunday to see what all was in there, and my fiance remarked that wouldn't it be great if somebody opened up a shopping area like this but only let independants in! Dream world! I think it's great to see places like Westport where some chains don't last long at all though!

  6. I've been using Crystal Light for about nine months now to get me through the 100 oz a day thing.  I can't vouch for anyone else.....but I'm 61 lbs lighter and there is NO doubt at all, for me , that the 100 oz a day has been a factor.

What flavors do you like, because I haven't cared for any of the ones I've tried?

I primarily drink the peach iced tea flavor.

Yeah, that's the one flavor I really didn't like... must not be for me! Damn... I have got to find a way to get that water in me!

  7. In all fairness, I have to report the bad with the good, so here goes nothing!

The bf and I went there tonight for dinner. I had the Wood-Grilled Atlantic Salmon with mango-pineapple salsa, mushroom risotto, and the vegetable of the day, which was sauteed mixed vegetables (squash, zucchini, mushrooms, red peppers.) Chris had the special of the day which was Pecan-Crusted Rainbow Trout which also came with the risotto and the sauteed veggies. Everything on my plate was EXTREMELY bland, not a speck of salt in sight, which meant that Chris' veggies and risotto were bland as well. Chris remarked that the sauteed veggies looked like something you would get at Applebee's! (Blech!) We both thought the trout was pretty decent and well seasoned, but didn't think that the risotto went with it very well. (I think something like a roasted sweet potato would have been a better pairing.) Hopefully, the lack of seasoning was a result of inexperienced cooks, because there were a bunch of them back there, and I can honestly say that I've never had a bland dish before tonight. I also felt it was a bit of a cop out to serve the same sides with the special that came with a regular menu item, but what do I know?! At any rate, they were extremely busy tonight and there was a 30-minute wait to sit on the patio but no waiting for inside. I'm glad to see people eating other places besides Nick and Jake's and Ted's in our neck of the woods! I'll still go back, because the goods have far outweighed the bads thus far, but just wanted to be fair in my reports!

  8. BTW, I've been to Coco Bolos many times and have had good and bad experiences. Their Tex-Mex cuisine certainly isn't groundbreaking.

I would have to politely disagree! It certainly is groundbreaking for Manhattan, KS, or the rest of Kansas in general for that matter... excluding Lawrence and Kansas City. I've always had excellent food there.

    Judy,

I wouldn't exactly call it Tex-Mex... it's no On the Border! I don't really know how to describe it... there's a little bit of Caribbean/ Jamaican influence, but some Mexican as well. Their specials are always outstanding, and my boyfriend claims the best steak he ever had was at Coco Bolo's! Their taters are TO DIE FOR! It's definitely worth the trip to Manhattan, for us. Of course, then we have to go to Chapman Fly Shop, but I'll suffer for the food!

No info yet... I just need to call them... might do that this afternoon!

What makes this food groundbreaking? Im curious to see what kind of beef they use as well.

To be clear, I said ground-breaking to Manhattan, not Kansas City. Ground-breaking, as there is nothing like it, not even close... quality, originality, just good food... Manhattan is definitely lacking in those categories, for the most part.

  9. I don't know about "pulling all of them off well," but everything I've ever had there I have loved... I just sometimes wish the rest of you would trust other people on the board as well, but I digress... (open mind, and all of that)

We took my dad to the new location for Father's Day last Sunday, and needless to say, everything was pretty awesome and pretty much the same as it was in Manhattan. The Evil Desert Chicken is a new item on the menu, along with a few others. I had the SW Caesar salad with Smoked Salmon... this wasn't my favorite thing of all time, but still really good... I was expecting a few flakes of salmon, but it had a whole filet on it! We had the trio salsa sampler to start, and I really love all of their salsa, and I'm a pretty picky salsa eater. The salsa de fuego was a bit spicier than usual, but I liked it better this way! My favorite is the corn and black bean salsa. I can't remember everything that everyone got, but my mom had the tacos, and they are her favorite tacos of all time, and didn't disappoint that day. The bf had their crab and corn quesadillas, and those are something I've always liked there. I must of not gotten enough tastes of the rest of the meals, b/c that's all I remember! :hmmm: The inside of the restaurant isn't as interesting as the Manhattan location, but still fun... there's only so much you can do with new construction in Leawood/ Overland Park! The one bit of sourness that I experienced from the new restaurant is that they turned us away the first night we tried to go... we just happened to be driving by, and noticed they were open and so went to eat there, but... it was the first night they were open and it must of been special invitation only, because they said it was reservations only. (They don't take reservations on a regular basis.) I guess they didn't see how excited I was skipping up to the door! :hmmm: Just a little gripe, but I felt rejected by one of my favorite restaurants!

Anyway, give it a try! If you don't like it, that's fine, but it's one of my favorites! FYI... I really enjoy their Pan Thai BBQ Pork and their Tostado Salad, among other things.

    Bumping.

This has been open for a couple weeks now. Has anyone taken a bullet for the team? If so, please post a review. If not, I'll try and get there sometime in the next week or so.

Why would one have to take one for the team if I've already said the Manhattan location is good? Just curious!

I work with someone who says this is her favorite restaurant, and we generally agree on places we like. But, this place serves "Thai BBQ", Texas BBQ, Caribean BBQ, Cajun BBQ, Mexican etc. I'm skeptical that anyplace can pull off all of these well. Except for maybe Cheesecake Factory or TGI Friday's of course.

That said I am looking forward to seeing how evil the Evil Desert Chicken can be.

  11. duckduck > it's made all in flash. You might need to update the player to view his site.

    I'd order, but I'm in canada and I can't. T_T I'm sooo denied.

Another vote for Christopher Elbow! His chocolates were the only thing I asked for my birthday and I got them!

    jenc-

Do you know... is there a problem with bringing the chocolates into Canada or is it just that he doesn't ship to Canada? For instance, if I were to bring some on my trip to BC in August, would I get taken away by the airport police?!

  12. Actually, I'm serious, I used to have a burn mark on my tummy (since healed) after I ran in the house to get cookies out of the oven. I had lost track of time laying out in a vain attempt to get a tan when I heard the alarm go off inside the house. Hey, if Food Network wants to give this non-trained, bikini and stiletto-wearing 23 year old a show, I'd take it. Anything pays better than what I'm making now as editor of a community newspaper! Credibility be damned!

    Shannon

... yeah, if TFN gave me my own show and I'd have to wear a thong, I'd take it too... although I'm sure the show wouldn't last long. :hmmm:

Ronnie, it's okay, you don't have to follow-up with a compliment to this post!

    I'd watch it!! :wink::wink:
