Keith - you got it! I'm paying more rent for about half the space I have now, but it'll be so worth it.
Love, love, love ramen. Have been deprived of it for a year while in Canberra. Not doubt I will be hitting some of those spots
BTW, anyone know of good places that deliver? I have a feeling that during the move, we may get too tired to have 3 meals out a day.

We will be moving into North Melbourne next week and want to know more about the area. We will get to Melbourne and our things won't arrive for a few days. So, we'll have to spend a few days eating out or getting takeaway.
Not looking for anything fancy right now, just good, causal places. Probably want inexpensive places too as we're are kind of poor after paying bond, rent and moving expenses. Also want places close by that we can walk to. We're a few blocks away from Errol St. and Victoria St.
TIA!

One of my favorite beans is Sidamo (Ethopian). It's fruity and has little acidity. I have tried the sun-dried version at Starbucks and it's very nice. I've also tried other types of Sidamo beans (can't remember the brands) and they have all had quite low acidity.

Paella! Drives up nuts hearing how people here in Australia and the Brits pronoun it. I just cannot bring myself to say Pa-ella.

Ok, Sydney has better Chinese food. But does Melbourne at least have better Chinese food than Canberra? (Please tell me yes)
One thing I absolutely hates in Canberra is that Cantonese BBQ places (often seemed to be run by Mandarin speaking folks) microwave the BBQ items. My grandfather, who owned a BBQ joint in Hong Kong, must be turning in his grave! Does that happen in Melbourne and Sydney as well?
-
I grew up with yum cha every Sunday as a kid in Hong Kong. So, nothing outside of Hong Kong really measures up anyway. I don't mind saving that for Hong Kong. In the meantime, something decent will do.
I was thinking Minh Tan sounded Vietnamese....I tried a Vietnamese place for yum cha once in Cabramatta. Not really the same as Cantonese.
I'm guess Mandarin cuisine may be better in Melbourne? Dumplings and such. I love those too. Anyone know of good places?

I have occasionally gotten those discount meats. Most of the time, the "best by" date is only a day or two before the regular price stuff! But between farmers markets and Costco, I rarely get meats at grocery stores....

Pho, ramen, any type of Asian noodle soup will do. Rice porridge as well....

annachan - I don't know if you're into apps, but this is a Foodies Guide to Melbourne
http://www.outware.com.au/our-apps/foodies-guide-to-melbourne-2012/
They have a book version too which is availabel in most bookstores. It has most of the information you're after
Will do some investigating on this one.
BTW, talk to me about Yelp! Is that a good place to look up info? I used it when I was back in San Francisco, but have not here.

annachan - sadly, I've also found Mel to be quite lacking in the sushi department. Even the lauded places, like Shiranui and Kenzan, were good but not great IMO.
After a year in Canberra, I'm happy with just good sushi!

Keith - I hear you. However, we're used to paying high rent in Canberra. I was hoping for cheaper in Melbourne, but I'm willing to pay the same - in the $600 range per week.

Savour chocolate and Patisserie school (savourschool.com.au) in Brunswick - they stock utensils, equipment and Callebaut/Cocoa Barry chocolate
OMG! I'm going to go broke in this shop! Love it!

Thanks for all the great info so far....I'm so excited....
I suspected Williamstown is further away from the food. However, I have 2 small dogs and most of the pet friendly rental listings are on that side of the bridge. We are looking hard to find something closer to Prahan Market though.
Kate - once we settle, you know we'll be arranging that eating visit!

After a year in Canberra, I'm sooooo glad to be finally moving to Melbourne. I'm not sure where we will be living yet (considering Williamstown, South Yarra, Toorak, Kew - somewhere nice and not too far from the city), but like to find out where to get what! I guess I'm looking for places to shop that aren't very far from the city, maybe within 20-30 km. Willing to travel for specialty stuff though.
*I love Victoria Market - any other markets I should know about?
*Other than at markets, good places for meat? Seafood (sashimi grade fish)? Produce?
*Bakeries - French, Italian, Asian - want some decent crusty bread!
*Gourmet shops - where do I go when I want to pick up the fancy stuff like Jamon Iberico, great cheeses, high end chocolates (for baking/confectionery), hard to find/specialty ingredients (something I may need for recipes in MC)
*Ethnic shops - Mexican/South American, Asian, European
*Kitchenware - small appliances (sous vide set up?), gadgets, cookware, etc.
Also, are there any good websites to look up things like restaurants, shops and services?

I put the raw meat balls directly in to the simmering sauce rather than cooking them first
Me too. Always.
I like it better that way. Meat can flavor sauce and vice versa.

I thought I saw that book in Costco (Canberra). I don't think it was anywhere near $50 as I considered purchasing it. Will have a look the next time I'm there.
-
Tabasco - I love the other chili sauces I have as well, but I have to just choose one, I have to have Tabasco. It does something for my oxtail soup that no other chili sauce can.
-
Tofu - does he eat tofu? You can fry them and toss them with salt & pepper, you can steam them and top with green onion and soy sauce, it can go into a vegetarian stir fry (i.e. tofu and green beans).
You should be able to find some good vegetarian dishes that fit with his diet, especially looking into Asian cuisines.

Trader Joe's is a beach party, Aldi's , with its stipped down everything, feels like a wake. That said, all Aldi's canned stuff is delicious and reliable.
Is this the same Aldi we have in the EU?! The 'wake' descriptor makes that seem probable (although the ones here are also apparently legally required to have a small collection of drunks in their parking lots at all times), but the selection of canned goods that one finds on their shelves in Denmark is of a uniform badness, suitable only for putting into the coffin of the deceased whose wake this is, if those left behind are taking a pessimistic view of his or her afterlife destination: They seem most appropriate to an eternity spent in hell.
According to my husband, Aldi in UK is pretty dodgy. The one across from where he used to live often carried products very close to or pass expiration dates.
The Aldi in Australia is much better.

We did a small rib roast (one bone) last week. Started out with a low oven (200f) and took it out at 118. The temp did rise too much to my liking when resting and then getting it back into a 500f to get brown. It came out with just a little pink, more on the med-well side.
If I do it again, I may take the roast out of the low oven at 110, so when it rested and get back in to brown, it'll probably be about med-rare.

Homemade stock - time is not as much an issue as that I have very little freezer space.
I pre-bake ribs before putting them on the bbq....

I was back in the US a few months back and was talking to friends about Aldi. One of them told me that Trader Joe's and Aldi are owned by the same people. I know they are quite different, but Aldi has grown on me.
Some stuff I pick up from Aldi regularly:
Mango smoothie (great with vodka!)
Biocult (pro-biotic drink)
Pasta bake sauce (mushroom and red wine flavor)
Tuna
Pasta (the cheap ones - actually holds up quite well, like the TJ brand)
Frozen fries/chips - I think is that cafe style ones
Mini ice cream cones - I'm quit fond of the strawberry ones
I've also picked up some good deals on kitchen gadgets, like the ones Snadra was talking about. But when I got them about 6 months ago, they were even cheaper, maybe for $5.

Puff pastry - add cheese and you get cheese pinwheel/straw for app; add meat/veggie fillings and you get pie for main or add sausage to make sausage roll; sprinkled with sugar and you get palmier for dessert.
Pasta, fresh and dry, are always on hand. Pair that with either a red jar sauce or just top with a fired egg, toasted breadcrumb and a little cheese.
Curry powder + coconut milk = broth for noodle. Add frozen fish/squid/beef balls. Miso + butter is another nice broth for noodle. Egg + frozen corn (mixed with butter) goes nicely with that noodle.
Chinese sausage + egg + rice + frozen corn/pea = fried rice.

Like others have said before, not all disabilities are apparent. Service dog can be a seeing eye dog, but it can also be for someone with emotional issues.
I think the crux of the "I can't stand the people who apparently abuse the system" argument are those who's "emotional issue" is that they can't bear to be separated from their pet for 15 freakin' minutes.
There are people with real mental health issues and their service dog help them function day to day. They get judge so often by people who just don't get it. A little understand really goes a long way.
Casual and takeaway places in North Melbourne

That is quite cool!
Another question: do must casual/inexpensive places take credit cards or cash only?
