  1. Hi everyone, I'm coming to Paris in November and will only have one night for dinner. My favorite restaurant, Mon Vieil Ami is closed on Mondays. What are your recs for a similar experience? I'm looking for something really delicious, not trendy, and not crazy expensive (although somewhat expensive is fine). Thanks so much in advance!
  2. I assume you've checked out our compendia on such shops? As for brasseries the first night: there's really only Bofinger but it's fun; avoid Les Grandes Marches which just reopened to resoundingly bad reviews. ← Thanks John, I did look at the compendia but did not see much in this particular neighborhood and I was hoping to get some reccommendations from people familiar with the area.
  3. My trip to paris was rescheduled from April to June. We will be staying in an apartment in the Marais (3rd) right near the old Jewish quarter. I would be grateful for reccommendations for: best patisseries, best boulangeries, best wine shops, and best cheese shops in the area. As for restaurants, here is the list I have compiled from reading egullet. We are looking for typical Parisian bistros, not too expensive, but excellent food that is different from what we would find here in NYC. Also, I'd love a recommendation for one good brasserie and a place to dine in the 3rd Arr. for our first night in Paris (a Sunday). Thanks in advance! Aux Lyonnais Le Pre Verre Les Fables de la Fontaine Chez Denise Au Fil de Saisons Les Papilles Le Comptoir du Relais
  4. No but their offshoot, Les Symples de l..... does and it's a hoot. ← Tell me more about Les Simples, I'm intrigued....
  5. Thanks for all the recs! One more question, do I need to reserve in advance for all these places? If so, how far in advance, since I have only about 2 weeks now and need to know how quickly I must get this reasearch done . Thanks!
  6. I am looking for recommendations for some great wine bars in Paris. Specifically, I would like places where I can try different wines by the glass and where I can find interesting wines that I may not be able to get here in NYC. Also, while I do speak French, I'm a bit rusty and I'd love a place where I can learn about the wine as well as drinking it (from a friendly and knowledgeable staff, for instance). Thank you in advance.
  7. Hello everyone, I would be grateful for some advice on planning our last minute trip to Paris. We will be there from April 21 through April 29. We need some suggestions for good but relatively inexpensive hotels. So far, I've looked into Hotel Saint Jacques and Grand Hotel des Balcons. We'd like to stay in the 5th, 6th or possibly 7th arr. My husband is 6'6", so we need a decent sized room. Does anyone have experience with the above hotels or any other suggestions for places we could book on such short notice? I'm also looking for restaurant recommendations. We would love a few casual bistros that are under 30 Euros per person (food only). As well as one nice place to celebrate our anniversary with great food that we won't be able to find here in NYC (50 Euros per person, no wine? - is that asking too much?) Lastly, I am a wine lover and would love to visit some great wine bars to try out wines I can't find here in the States. Any other suggestions for our trip would be greatly appreciated!
  8. My husband and I will be coming to San Juan, PR from November 3 to November 6. This will overlap with my husband's birthday. I would love to take him out for a special dinner. It should be something authentic to PR with a decent atmosphere. I am flexible on price but don't want to break the bank (not more than $200 including drinks). Is there anything special people could recommend?
  9. We are back from our trip and had a great time in Montreal! We changed our reservation from Auberge Bonaparte and stayed at the Inter-Continental. I thought the hotel was quite good and we were pleased with the location. More importantly, we loved the food. 1st night- Joe Beef - This was our favorite experience in Montreal. We arrived and asked to be seated at the bar (thanks to all who recommended this!). The owner went through the menu with us and made some great suggestions. I started out with the oysters, which were the freshest and tastiest oysters I have ever eaten. My husband had the tomato salad with mozzarella. At first, I thought this was a boring choice but the tomatoes were spectacular. I then had the Sole Meuniere (accompanied by a lovely unoaked Chardonnay) and my husband had the Steak Diane. The steak must have weighed at least 16 oz. - it was enormous and enormously flavorful. The fish was also excellent. We also had a side of the creamed corn, which had just the right amount of creaminess and fresh, sweet, corn kernels. For dessert, I had the peach crumble and my husband had the chocolate mousse. Everything was perfectly prepared. We loved talking to all the staff and being able to peek at the kitchen activity from our seats at the bar. We also really enjoyed the feel of this restaurant: casual yet very serious about the food. I can't wait to go there again next time we are in Montreal. 2nd night - APDC - Another fabulous meal. I had the foie gras bite to start. It was a fried ball with liquified foie gras on the inside. It was an original, albeit, petite appetizer. My husband had a salad with apples and blue cheese. He then had the steak frites. The venison steak was great - not too gamey and extremely tender. I had the poutine! WOW! For me, the poutine was the perfect combination of all my favorite foods. One thing that surprised me about APDC was the ambiance. I thought it would have a more charming bistro feel but it felt a bit like a cafeteria or a fancy diner. Regardless, this didn't take away from my enjoyment of the food. I will write another post about our third night at Anise later. Thanks again to everyone who gave us great recommendations. This trip would not have been the same without egullet.
  10. Thanks everyone. After much research, I have made reservations at the following restaurants for 3 nights out of 4: Anise, APDC, and Joe Beef. I need one more! I was thinking a casual, not too expensive Bistro, would be a nice complement to the other three restaurants. Again, I'm looking for something quintessential Montreal that I can't get in NYC. Any thoughts?
  11. Thank you so much! I am going through all the posts and doing my research. One thing I forgot to ask, my husband is a lover of fine cocktails. I already saw a recommendation for Whiskey bar. Does anyone else have thoughts on places that make a fabulous cocktail in Montreal?
  12. Hi everyone, I am planning a five day trip to Montreal over Labor Day weekend. We have booked a room at the Bonaparte Hotel in the old town. Does anyone have thoughts on this hotel? I would also love recommendations for a great wine bar as well as Montreal restaurants. We live in NYC so we would like to go to places that are truly, unique to Montreal. Thanks in advance!
