  1. Thanks! It looks like a great area to ride, too bad I won't have a bike there. But it does look as though I'll eat well.

I plan to get to a few of them and will report back.
  3. I'll be traveling to the Garmish-Partenkirchen area for a family trip in mid-June. I found great recommendations for Munich on this board, but didn't find info for this area. Does anyone know of any "must try" restaurants or area specialties within about an hour drive of G-P? We will actually be based in Grainau, but we're willing to drive for good/interesting food.
  4. I was in much the same situation as gingerpeachy was last week, but my night out was on Friday and I scored a seat at the bar at Avec. The whole experience was fantastic. My waiter and the rest of the staff were attentive and very helpful when I asked questions. I loved the energy of the place and the fact that the staff maintained their easy manner even when the place became packed. The food was very good. I started with a special, an apple and celery salad that was fantastic. My other dish was octopus in a tomato sauce. The octopus was perfectly cooked, the best I've had outside of the Mediterranean. I'm not doing justice to the food in my descriptions because I was too busy people-watching and enjoying my food to examine the ingredients closely. My waiter even managed to find a wine that worked well with both dishes. There are many wines by the glass, another thing that makes this such a great solo dining place. My only frustration was that, since I was alone, I could only sample two dishes. Well, three -- I did have dessert, house-made chocolate that was in bark form. It was good, not too sweet. When I go back I'll try the bacon-wrapped dates, they looked fantastic. We have great restaurants in Seattle, but we don't have a place that is hip (and so well designed) and unpretentious and has great food. This package is what made Avec really stand out for me.
  5. Many Greek and Middle Eastern desserts age and ship well. I've shipped baklava, koulouria, melomakarina, and karidopitta and other syrup cakes succesfully. Paula Wolfert and Aglaia Kremezi are two of my favorite sources for recipes for these desserts.
  6. Welcome to Seattle! A few of these are a bit of a walk, but worth it if you have the time. Its a good way to see downtown a bit. Probably a good idea to call to check if places are open today. Baguette Box (1203 Pine St) Green Leaf Vietnamese(418 8th Ave S) El Puerco Lloron (1501 Western Ave) De Laurenti's (1435 1st. Ave) Black Bottle (2600 First Ave) These are all that come to mind now. Good luck house hunting.
  7. Lorna and Henry -- It looks like you've inspired a number of us to de-lurk! I think that it's fitting to use my first EG post to thank you both for taking me along with you this week. It was a great read. Lorna, for coffee have you tried Victorola (411 15th Ave E) or Cafe Fiore (224 W Galer St)? I like them both for different reasons. I'm also not a big Top Pot fan, they're ok but I prefer Mighty O donuts. Mighty O (2110 N 55th St) is across the street from Zoka, or you can try one at Cafe Fiore. Laurie
