  1. The old Quay Restaurant on Marinaside in Yaletown will now be................

    VINTROPOLIS # 2!

I prefer wine to sports however a big sorry to all you sports fans!

Are you serious? Could they not have given it a better name? It would be like calling Sean's retaurants Fiction , Fiction (#2) and Fiction (#3). Let's hope they come up with something better, It's a great spot.

  2. What a lovely response Neil!

I must be blind, I didn't come across your $35 menu, Thank you for all the info

I'm glad to see everyone is going to more than 1 restaurant. As to all the distress over Lumiere being sold out, I think Irish girl is right about saving all the stress about going there while Dine out is going on, I would rather take my time enjoying the meal than feel hurried out the door because the staff under the gun!

    My dearest Macha,

I am offering two levels of Dine Out menu - $25.00 and $35.00

I did that last year as well. It presents a couple more options for the diner as well as a chance for me to see a couple of dollars more if they so wish. We see about a 70 % / 30 % split on the two price ranges.

I am also offering a few additions if people want to order prawns or mushrooms on the side etc. This is the perfect solution for those people who can not order alcohol, and yet do not want to be percieved as cheap. I know this has been tossed around recently

    Order more food !!

  3. Today marks the official start of bookings for Dine Out 2006.  The Tourism Vancouver website seems to be fairly slow in loading today - guess it is having load issues or something.  But the menus are up and available if you can get through to the site:

    Tourism Vancouver

Seems like a slightly different mix of restaurants than in year's past (most notably the Top Table group of restaurants is absent), and several are making their bookings available through Open Table to be booked directly as well.

    Cheers!

I have been quite absent for while but with the flurry of Dine Out, time had to be made!

I am quite sure that the Top Table group is participating this year as their menus are posted on the Tourism Vancouver site. Am I 100% correct, I hope so. With Neil stating that he has an additional $35 menu makes me wonder! Neil??

  4. Just a thought for a upcoming burger gathering!

Argo Cafe at 2nd and Ontario!

I have tried tons of burger shops in Vancouver and Argo is my best find so far! For $6 you can have a fully loaded burger and fries.

Only problem is, they are closed Sunday and Mondays. So that may not work for the club, but if anybody gets the chance to swing in there, you won't be sorry.

  5. There are so many great Chef's in Vancouver that its hard to pick just one. So here are my top three.

Morgan Lechner - Kettle of Fish

The most down to earth, un-pretentious Chef I have ever met. Morgan and his team always are the most inviting, funny and ultimate hosts.

    Michael Knowlson- Sequoia Grill

At the Wedgewood and now Sequoia Grill. Michael has my vote for the most underrated Chef in this city. Brilliant every time.

    Marc-André Choquette - Lumière

14 years in the kitchen, he is the hardest working dedicated Chef in the city. Rob your lucky to have him!

  6. As the operations manager for C and Nu, I would like to offer everyone in this forum a warm hello. Thank you to all who have stumbled upon Nu or sought us out in the last couple of days.

Our first, official day of business is September 2nd. Everything culminating towards these dates is a pre-opening, or "dress rehearsal". During this time, we will be serving a limited number of guests. We will gradually increase that number when we feel we have achieved our level of guest experience.

A previous e-Gulleteer noted that a soft opening is neither a luxury nor a necessity but simply a choice on the proprietor's part. I couldn't have written it better myself. Mssrs. Kambolis, Clark, Belcham and I measure what we do thoughtfully and carefully, never rushing in where "angels fear to tread". It has been our choice, and our pleasure, to launch Nu with a whimper, and not a bang.

Broadway mega musicals don't open gloriously on Broadway, they open quietly in Poughkeepsie, NY, first. The ones that seem to succeed do, anyway.

So, until September 2nd, enjoy the dress rehearsal.

    Yours in service,

    Leonard

I had the chance last week to wander into NU (thinking it was already open due to the amount of people), and was very impressed with the hostess. She offered a menu that I could take with me. In following conversations around the city, I was pleased that there is much excitement about NU opening. As the menu is still in my purse, I have been showing your menu to every one that is curious. Again I would like to thank Leonard and Harry for the sneak peak after the excellent C Sustainability Luncheon and look forward to my first visit to NU.

  7. now I'm totally looking forward to the drive.  My foot isn't lead; I have one of Larwencium (Lr -- the heaviest element in the periodic table I have handy  ).  I'm just bummed that I'll be driving the family car (um, which did get us several laps around the Nordschleife at the 'ring a few years ago)...

Actually the drive is really not that bad anymore, I just took a trip with my kids at the end of July and went camping. They have done tons of work to the roads and other then the hike in parking fees for Pacific Rim, It was great. SOBO was excellent and honestly the best place to eat. We tried other restaurants and found it all very bland and expensive. When I figure out how to post pictures I will add the pic of my killer fish taco! awesome! Have a great trip

  8. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on excellent places to eat while we are heading up to Tofino this weekend to enjoy Long Beach and area, that doesn't break the bank. We are going to try and check out Glow in Nanaimo while we are briefly visiting and raid Coombs market as well. But other than those two places, I'm at a loss. Any thoughts?

  9. Future Shop must have wifi, hey? (I mean the place is not called "20th Century Shop".) If so, someone should go down with a laptop and get Rob to create his eG profile on the spot. For the good of the Society, Arne, do it! And collect Aeroplan miles in the process.

    ETA:

editted to add: I found out Rob is there to sign cookbooks.  Future Shop sells cookbooks?

(In deep announcer voice) The Future of Cuisine can be found here at Future Shop.

Damn that's not bad. I think I'll run for Feenie's manager position.

You guys are killing me  thank you

edited for clarification: rolling on the ground laughing until it hurts, thank you again!

  10. Service: 10 days of operation and still some growing pains:

A group of my friends and I started my birthday evening at Stella’s on the 2nd and it was an interesting evening. I had to remind everyone that they had only been open for 1 week and they like any new restaurant, they had to iron out the kinks mainly in regards to service. The variety of drinks was refreshing and the food was very good. I started with the beef carpaccio, then moved to the pan seared calamari with capers and olives but was surprised with very large squid tubes instead of the whole calamari. The PEI mussels were awesome and the aioli that came with the fries was absolutely amazing, best I have had in the city so far. I look forward to returning.

  11. It's not quite in the city but my families been going there for at least 25 years, Uncle Herbies in Ladner.  It's owned by an old Scottish fellow and the fish and chips are always fantastic.  Especially the Halibut.  Go Fish is good, but if you're looking for something a little more "traditional", this is the place to go.  So far, I haven't been able to find anything in the city that comes close, plus the ambiance of Uncle Herbies just makes you want to stay forever.  Hmmm...I'm thinking the Mafia may have to go for a weekend road trip.  If you go, you must order the mushy peas; best in the city.

I agree!!!!! I haven't found any restaurant that does H&C as awesome as Uncle Herbert’s. I have always dragged people out to Ladner because I'm never disappointed and I insist that they are the best in BC.

  12. That lunch at C Restaurant was honestly the best lunch I've ever had. The dishes were such a visual feast, and the seared scallop on the pork shoulder and morels was probably one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten--so earthy and rich, sweet and briny! Thanks to everyone who had a hand in organizing such a wonderful event. It was amazing to see how the servers working in tandem and the patio couldn't have offered a more beautiful view of Vancouver.

    Wow,

I have to agree," that was the most impressive meal and service I have ever experienced." Thank you to Jamie and Leonard for finding a space for me to attend at such short notice. The panel was terrific and very informative; I look forward to working with them in the near future. I hope the slow roasted pork shoulder is on the menu as all I have been doing is raving about it and all the terrific plates we were served. I look forward to my next visit to C.

It was very nice to put faces to all of your names, thank you, it was a pleasure.

  13. Of course most restaurants in Vancouver have some form of large-party or banquet services for big groups, but I'm looking for a list of restaurants (not catering companies, though I hear some are quite decent) that do off-site catering for private events.

Here is a list of restaurants that definitely do catering:

    Diva at the Met

    CRU Restaurant

    Elixir @ OPUS

    Amici

    Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts

    C Restaurant

    Coast

    Glowbal

And to clarify, a lot of restaurants such as West 'cater' but only for private functions at the restaurant - this list is specifically off-site catering.

    Any more to add guys?

EDIT: New to the list from replies:

Rodney's Oyster House (No Vancouver site available, but they have a Yaletown location)

    Joe Fortes

    Aurora Bistro

I believe Rob Feenie does off site catering events for private funtions

  14. Good hot dogs are entirely situational. It's neither the weiner nor the condiments that make a good dog, but the environment and situation you eat it in.

And beside, the best hot dogs in the city are found at golf courses, no question what so ever. A bad golf course hot dog is ten times better than one of those dirty street cart dogs cooked by some marginal workforce participant with a drinking problem and a lack of understanding why fingers should remain outside of nostrils. Besides, (and I can't beleive I even have to explain such basic fundementals to a group of food enthusiasts,)  a hotdog with out a beer is like Arnie without his delete button, Neil without hangar steak or Maw without sexual puns.

It is situational, I was one of those Veggie people for 8 years and I took myself on a trip to NY. I had to see everything and was always starving because " Really" "I can see the empire state building, it can't be that far to walk” Hotdog stands saved me from starving and saved my wallet too. They were quite good, but nothing like the pretzels with mustard... Sorry off topic  I don't think many people would seek out hotdogs other than ballgames which give you the 3 condiment options..... Golf courses??? You mean the little sandwich shops halfway through the course?? See: " Ball game hotdogs above" Thanks but I’ll stick to the vendors with the olives and mayo, pickles etc........ that may or may not keep their fingers outside their nostrils  yuk

  15. I favour the hot dog stand located on West Broadway (in front of the Future Shop). The buns are fresh and chewy and there's brand-name condiments a-plenty. The smokies are juicy, skins popping with gas-grilled criss-crosses. The texture is sublime.

    Worst dog---Ikea; no comment.

    Hi Jen

I would have to agree about the dogs on Broadway, But now I am going to have to try the stand by the Wedgewood. I have found the guys up at Georgia and Granville who have been there forever, serve a pretty good dog as well.

  16. Chef Fowke and I were talking a few months about a butchery course, but it just sort of dropped to the side....Hmmmm...Brian, any thoughts?

There are precious few skilled butchers around these days. Stepping into a new job about a year ago, where minor-league butchery skills were important, I took it upon myself to get a bit of education.

Having only a little of the most common butchery skills in my background, I phoned a local, and recommended butcher shop, to see if I could "drop in" for a couple days with the butcher.

A couple of rounds of phone tag later, they were happy to take me in to break down a front, then hind quarter of beef. It's one thing to clean a striploin, tenderloin, or a prime rib, and to read about it in a text book and have an understanding of what goes where. It's another to put that side of beef on a table and cut it up.

Big ups to Slater's in Victoria.

Butchery, as a trade, seems to be becoming a niche market. What do you think the grocery chains are doing about this? Do they still employ ticketed butchers?

    -- Matt.

I know that the Nesters in Vancouver and Surrey locations both have excellent butchers, I only buy from them.

  17. I just went to Meinhardt on Saturday and the sale ended already... and they even ran out of the 64% dark baking bars.  :'(

I did end up buying one of their specialty 64% bars for $11.  It was so expensive... and there were so many to choose from.  I ended up with a Madagascar 64% dark and it was very very smooth.  Unfortunately the flavour lacked character.  I would have to say Scharffen Berger's flavour is a lot bolder and lingers around in my mouth after I'm done eating.

I was over at Whole Foods this afternoon and they had the Valrhona Chocolate priced at $14, so i think you did alright with $11.

  18. 7.  In the west end you can get delivery (15.00 minimum)

You should update your website to reflect that. I can't seem to find it on there. (But perhaps I just missed it?)

    Cheers!

Delivery??? Since when? Im eating at Veras way to much lately and have to say the onion rings are the best in the city ( Sorry to the A&W supporters :raz: )

Im intrested in the Fennies burger test next month, i have heard good things about their burgers , but can they handle the burger critique?

  19. The last time I was at Seven Seas, they only had frozen ones which looked like they had been frozen for quite some time.

If you give the 7 Seas - 4th store a call and talk to Paul or Diana they will hook you up probably within a day or two. They are awesome

edited to add: No frozen crayfish right now, but im not sure how long the fresh season will last, so you should grab them while you can.

  20. Well all this talk about Lesley Stowe's raincoast crisps was giving me a bad craving.... after way to many hours in the car today I had to drag myself down to Urban Fare because Lesley Stowe's store was closed... my "poor me" draggling on, does have a excellent ending.

New Fig and Olive crackers and way too much french and english cheese to try with it!!!(Morbier and Wensleydale with cranberries)

Does anyone have any ideas on great cheese to try next time?

Must not forget chocolate of course to go with all the left over cheese...
