  1. Wow- I just returned from Az, and dined on both Thursday, and Friday at Eliot's restaurant. The food was beyond amazing, and I was able between the two nights to eat most of the menu. it is also very affordable as is the wine. On Friday we brought my boyfriends client and his wife. The wife at the end of dinner said it was the best restautrant she had ever been to in Arizona. They returned on Saturday night with two other couples for a party of 6. He said that if they are this busy now then come winter you won't be able to get in so he wants to become a regular. His wife sent out an e-mail blast to a list of 100 people letting them all know they must try NOCA.

    The crudo menu was amazing= especially the big eye tuna, and kampachi.  We ate the foie torchon both nights, and it was perfect. The pasta's also were fantastic- I haven't had a agnolotti that good since Paul Bartolota left Spiaggia. The entrees were equally delicious- steak frites, and pork chop with the seared pork belly were my favorites. Everyone seems to enjoy the cotton candy they serve gratis after dinner. I didn't know cotton candy could taste that good- deffinitely not the ballpark type. Another whimsical touch is the way they serve the drinks- if you order a vodka soda you get a glass with a frozen ice ball and vodka, and then the soda in a separate carafe to pour as you please.

    The desserts were also great, and that would be something I would normally skip escpeially after 3 apps, a pasta, and an entrée but they were to good not to eat. All in all great experiences both nights, and great atmosphere. The music is great, and the staff are all clearly veterans to the industry. Of course there is also Eliot working the room, and making sure everyone has a good experience- I am so impressed. He has hit a homerun on his first at bat, and works the room like a pro. I know this restaurant is going to be a huge success, and everyone should make the trip to see for themselves. :biggrin:

    Anyway, What do you mean "around Outback level", i've never eaten at Outback so I wasn't sure/

    If the traveler is looking for more worldly menus as someone suggested, they may be disappointed. But the part about traveling is eating what the locals eat, experincing the city - any city - in what makes it unique.

    While ZIn and Wildflower may have "safe" menus, the service there is usually tops.

    Sorry for the typo...What I mean by Outback level (which is another great VALUE dining spot) is that the quality of the meat is not of the Prime grade. If you are used to eating Snake River Farms Wagyu meat at Per Se and then you eat a $14.95 Filet or whatever at El Corral then the difference in meat quality can be jarring. If he has limited meals while in Tucson then I do not think that would be a place to recommend. I feel that based on what he is used to dining-wise that will be a hokey experience for him. There are other places that are unique to Tucson that the quality of the cuisine will be special. As far as Zin and Wildflower, I do not find those special or unique to Tucson. They have safe mainstream menus that appeal to the masses, not the epicure.

    Thanks for that comment - I'll take it as a compliment. 

    While I do want to get to some uber fancy places, part of why I like traveling (although it probably doesn't show in my photos and blogposts *sheepish*) is discovering the local flavors and hole in the walls...  so to speak...

    Pedestrian is never a good thing, but unique, at any level, is always a plus.  El Torero, I gather, fits the bill for the latter...  yes?  :biggrin:

    I understand completely a spot does not have to be ritzy to be good. As far as El Corral, the quality of the meat, IMO, is around the Outback level. El Torero is definitely in that category. What I mean by pedestrian is that they are owned by a restaurant group that seems to tailor their offerings to "safe" cuisine. Look at their menus, I do not think you will find anything unique in there. There are neat breakfast spots in Tucson and some of them have been covered in the threads.

  5. For fancy eats: The Grill at Hacienda del Sol

                         

    For great Mexican: El Torero off og South 4th Avenue

                                El Sur on 22nd st just east of Craycroft

                                Micha's del Norte on Prince Road

    A great prime rib or Steak: El Corral

    Loew's has a brand new chef, so I'm not sure what his food is like.

    Cafe Poca Cosa is no longer on Broadway. They moved about a year ago to the corner of Pennington & Scott Streets. Decor is way different. Food is still delicious although pricier than anything on 4th Ave.

    I thought the new chef at Loew's was the Executive Chef of the property not of the restaurant?

    El Corral for greatr prime rib & steaks - you must order the tamale pie rather than potato

    El Torero in South Tucson for Mexican

    The Grill at Hacienda del Sol for fancy eats

    Also Janos for uptown food.

    Bistro Zin or Wildflower for great lunches.

    Terra Cotta and Cafe Poca Cosa just because they get so much press.

    All these are locally owned, which is an important issue here in Tucson.

    You did give nice choices to dine while in Tucson, but U.E. has exposure to national and international dining so some of those I feel will be a grave disappointment to him.

    El Corral- I like that salad and if you are speaking of VALUE dining then you are dead on, but the meat served is not of the Prime grade.

    Bistro Zin and Wildflower are somewhat pedastrian

    Terra Cotta because it gets so much press...why...don't you think the food has not been the same since it relocated to its new location

    El Torero was my go to choice for that style of mexican eats...chimis' and enchiladas at a reasonable price

    You worked at the Inn at Little Washington in the mid 90's, so you would know the kitchen of Chef Patrick O'Connell. As you know from being in the business people come and go all the time and the next great Chef steps in. Chef Binkley is a great talent and Chef O'Connell recognized that. Have you eaten at Binkley's? It is great!

  8. My apologies to Chef Cantu if my photos did not capture his dishes. Frankly, to say they look like a pile of slop on a big white plate is not accurate. I think that you should reconsider that judgement and I would like  to see your ability to plate. I also think that to make statements like that without dining at the restaurant is ridiculous. If you have the passion to post that opinion then go to Moto to prove yourself right or NOT. I have eaten there with 6 other diners and everyone liked it and would return. Moto is a great dining experience and you need to give it a try and then make your judgements.

    p.s. Your post on March 16, 2004-I thought you said that you had never eaten at Moto? :wink: You also have said many other complimentary remarks concerning Cantu in other posts?

    Trotter "scrapped" plans for London WAY before 2002, so just wondering where you're getting your info.

    When I read people saying they know so much or worked in some places it seems so obviously not true and since this is a site where no names are used you could say just about anything!

    I think that in this case inventolux does know what he is talking about being that he was Trotter's sous chef for 5 years or so. By the way inventolux, I had dinner at Moto the other day and it was awesome. I really believe you and chefg are going to push dining into a new realm whether people like it or not. I really like your approach to wine, when I walk into a place I want to put my trust in the chef's hands and let them guide me as they wish. It was an experience!
