  1. We've eaten at Paradiso in Grand Forks a couple times. I love their food. They also have one in Fargo. We have also eaten at Dave's BBQ. I can't remember the exact name. Will have to look it up for you. Also, in Fargo they have Outback Steakhouse which we haven't tried yet but they are always good as we've eaten there many times in LA. Hubby's co-worker just gave him a name of a place for us to try next. I'll have to check on that place. The Bronze something.
  2. Our Chinese food in Winnipeg is THE best!
  3. Please post about your trip when you come back. Have a good time!
  4. Wow, nice photos! Thanks for sharing.
  5. Sounds great! It's too bad we don't have Krispy Kreme in our province.
  6. Cookin' with Sue-On! I believe that would be a good name for the newest food show on Food Network in September!!! WOW, what an experience!!! I'm still boiling joongzis here! lol This morning I was up at 6 am and had a pot going. Yesterday I had 4 pots going, 2 here and 2 at my MIL's house. Tonight I will have one more pot to cook. I think with all the excitement I didn't read the grocery list carefully. I ended up soaking 4 double packets of bamboo leaves. Wow, and every leaf got used!! I am still so tired but very happy!! My freezers will be full and won't need to make any more till next year. I know I got a LOT more than 5 dozen. I was going to give some to Leslie (since she had different fillings) to bring home for her hubby but she didn't want to take them in case she ended up opening them in error. lol Thank you so much, Sue-On! You are a wonderful instructor. Very patient and full of humour and knowledge. You made the session so much fun and easy. I think I might be able to handle it on own next year. lol But think it would be more fun to work together with you and Leslie and Sija again. Amanda and Bruce really enjoyed themselves as they always do when at your house. I really enjoyed the ribs and the pork siu mai. You'll have to share your recipes with me. The ribs were just like what I had when I was a kid! Both Leslie and I agreed that the pork siu mai are a lot better than what we have in our dim sum restaurants!! The mushrooms and onions really gave it a different flavor which I enjoyed. I also like the idea of less rice and more fillings. I just had 4 of them for lunch (well, they were so tiny!!!) and I sure didn't have that heavy, full feeling that you get from eating the ones made by some of the Guangdong Province people! My cousins sent some over made in that perfect pyramid shape. I haven't tried them yet but I bet they will be full of rice!!! Now, for next year I think I'll make some changes with fillings - more duck egg yolks, less peanuts, Chinese mushrooms, Spanish onions, more chestnuts, lop cheung with liver inside, might try curing my own pork and maybe even some of the dried shrimp!!! I'm proud to be part of your family, Sue-On and thank you again!!! BTW, Bruce's pics were not the greatest. Hope Bill's got some good ones to share. I will send you the ones we have. Let's talk about our next cooking session??!! ;-)
  7. The Empress Pavilion is really, really good!!!
  8. This is the way Amanda enjoys the noodles too!!!
  9. Tavern in the Park? Oh! I'm hoping a nice dessert (mostly take-out) opens in R.H. sometime in the next month or two ← Pam, You will have to give us the name and address of your new place! Would love to pop by and check out your desserts! Last year for MIL's birthday, instead of ordering a birthday cake we just picked up some fancy desserts. Everyone really enjoyed!!! Might do that again this year. Lily
  10. Kum Koon has dou fu fa on weekdays now if you are interested. We were just there on Monday. My gf and I had their buffet and no room for dim sum. I believe they have the best fried rice!!! Buffet is from 12-2. Next time I go will be for dim sum. It seems they have a huge variety on weekdays now.
  11. Pine Ridge Hollow is another great place! We were just there for Mother's Day. www.pineridgehollow
  12. It didn't work. This is what comes up: HTTP Status 404 - /pictur.gif -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- type Status report message /pictur.gif description The requested resource (/pictur.gif) is not available. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Apache Tomcat/4.1.
  13. Filling for my rolls: I use coleslaw mix (pre-chopped cabbage and carrots), onions, LOTS of garlic, waterchestnuts, ground pork, seasonings and don't cook the veggies.
  14. Forget Prairie oysters... try Manitoba lobsters! Article on our front page this morning: http://www.winnipegfreepress.com
  15. I was just going to say that Victoria Seafood is on St. Mary's Road. I mentioned this place to hubby last night and he tells me we had dinner there YEARS ago. Yes, Sun Fortune is an excellent place to eat at too. They have good BBQd meats their and even make their own Chinese long and round donuts (goes with congee). They are the only place I've heard of that marinates their BBQ pork with peanut butter. They didn't really want to tell us their secret. lol But with my daughter's nut allergy and seafood allergy, we always ask about ingredients in any restaurant we eat in. At first they just kept saying for her to stay away from the BBQ pork. Finally it came out about the peanut butter.
  16. Nice to see another Winnipeger here! There are so few...I'll be back in YWG for the summer--I'm looking forward to eating at my favourite places! (Bistro Dansk, Kum Koon, bubble tea from Asia City, etc). There's no cookbook forum, but there are a lot of threads on cookbooks out there--you might also want to take a look at the Site Tips, User Guides, Netiquette forum for tips on how to post--particularly how to use quotations. For some reason your quotations are coming up as your own words--I think perhaps some of the tags are being deleted (they need to stay in if you're quoting). ← Thanks for the tip! I will check out the Site Tips, User Guides, Netiquette forum when I have some free time. You'll see some interesting changes when you come back this summer. Hu's on First is also neat place to eat at too. Similar to PF Chang in the US. And you must go to Alycia's for their borscht and perogies!!
  17. My favorite Dim Sum place (Victoria Seafood) is down the street... I'll have to look for it when I'm out that way. Thanks. ← I've never heard of Victoria Seafood. Is it open on the weekends? I have always just eaten dim sum at Kum Koon, Grand Garden and occasionally at Marigold. The New Hong Snack House used to be really good at one time. Oh, let's not forget the Dim Sum Garden Restaurant. If you dine there after 2 pm, all dim sum items are 1/2 price.
  18. Are you talking about Schmoo Torte???? That's one of my fav desserts. Used to have it at Alycia's but think they've discontinued since last couple times I was there they didn't have any. I think the last night I had it was at that famous Dessert place on Osborne. Can't remember the name. My girlfriend wanted to go there before moving away to North Battleford. I would love to try your Schmoo Torte, Pam! ;-)
  19. Our perogies are kinda big too. ;-) There was a really nice photo in Winnipeg Life Magazine - Spring 2005 of perogies from Alycia's. Love their borscht too. I'll send in the photo if I can figure out how to share it here.
  20. ← Hi there, I'm still trying to find my way around this forum. :-) Mitzi's is a little place with about 25 to 30 tables. They are located down on St. Mary's and Smith (I think). They are best known for their chicken fingers but we've had their Chinese food there too. No complaints. Food is excellent every time. Here's a bit about them. Not sure how I can share the picture from the article. Let's see if this comes through ok. ← Oops, here's the article from Manitoba Calling Magazine - Spring 2003 Mitzi’s Chicken Fingers Hands Down, The Tastiest Fingers Around It’s nearly impossible to describe the crispy, savoury coating on Mitzi’s chicken fingers, but if you’ve ever tasted one of these tender treats, you know that it’s the coating that keeps you coming back for more. Owner Shirley Eng, who serves up about 200 platters of chicken fingers every day, will only divulge that the recipe is an "ancient Chinese secret," and that the plump chicken breasts from which they are made are carefully marinated overnight for maximum tenderness. Generous portions, quality eats and quick service are the praises of longtime customers who have visited Mitzi’s Chicken Finger Restaurant at 250 St. Mary Avenue in Winnipeg over the past 25 years. Incidentally, there really is no "Mitzi" behind the eatery’s name. Eng says that Mitzi is simply the Chinese translation of what her restaurant stands for: tasty food. MC
  21. Pam: I don't know anything about Mitsy's, but Lily has joined eGullet and she will post some info'. She's actually coming out to meet us tomorrow...for the first time. We were introduced through another food list. This internet is amazing! ← Hi there, I'm still trying to find my way around this forum. :-) Mitzi's is a little place with about 25 to 30 tables. 22. My cousin makes the best Korean BBQ. But she lives in San Diego!! What are your favourites? I haven't found any that use real charcoal yet. They all seem to be gas grills.
  23. I usually pick up my copy at the Liquor Mart at City Place or Northgate. They always have lots of copies. And I pick up my copy of Ciao at Gimli Fish. Now I need to check to see if there is a forum just for cookbooks. Can you tell me where? I've been looking for it and can't find it ... although if you're picking it up free here, could be it's right under my nose and I keep missing it
  24. We pick it up for free here in Winnipeg. Where do you buy Flavours? ←
