  1. Hi So there are 3 options for supermarkets w/in walking distance. Whole Foods is right off of Duke Street about a 10 minute walk from the King Street Metro. There is a Trader Joes at like Wyeth and St Asaph (on St Asaph between Wyeth and Pendleton) and a Balduccis at 600 Franklin St right off of washington street. For dinners, i like the Majestic Cafe www.majesticcafe.com which is at 911 King Street and for dessert or really anytime there are two ice cream shops down by the water on King Street. I also can recommend sitting at the bar and having the fishbowl/chalice of beer at the Fish Market but i would not eat more than appetizer stuff at the bar, the spiced shrimp by the pound go well w/the beer.
  2. 4 of ate at Siroc last night. We sat outside since it had cooled down enough to want to be outside. Our waiter was friendly and more importantly knowledgeable about both the menu and wine list. Two of our party were deciding between two entrees and he gave his opinion on the 4 different options and informed one of them that while the lobster is on the regular menu, the gnocchi was a restaurant week special. Anyway back to the food, we tried 3 of the appetizers (the highlight being the housemade pork sausage) and 4 different entrees. I had the lobster w/roasted corn which were light and just right for a cool summer night, my gf had the free range veal cheeks which were tender and cooked perfectly. the other dishes were duck breast w/a tarte which was filled with tallegio and turnips (this was wonderful) and the gnocchi which were light but the sauce was just ok. desserts which i normally skip made me glad i did not skip them. i had the almond cake and the blueberries and zabaglione sauce added to the whole rather than overwheleming it. overall i think restaurant week should make you want to tell other people about your experience and return again, Siroc delivered on both.
  3. For a hidden drinking gem, check out the Matchbox 770 N Milwaukee Ave Chicago, IL 60642-5939 (312) 666-9292 it's tiny like the name suggests so you will get to know your neighbors. the bartenders make each drink from scratch, no mixes on site and there is an eclectic beer list.

    KFC or Popeyes?

I was not sure it was a chain but a quick google search says they are, so i would like to add Crown Fried Chicken. I have only eaten there in Philadelphia but it's fantastic, more parts are parts chicken than i will have a breast and a drumstick and instead of biscuits it's white bread buns. not a high end place but delicious.

    Porterhouse steak

i am sending my gf to dean and deluca to get the salt in the pictures on the philly tasters page. she may be headed out to get a proper pan as well, i wonder if they would let me on the plane with a big old steel pan. thanks for the help.
  6. OK so i need some cooking advice. I am in Dc for a few days and my parents just called and told me they are having a lobels steak sent to my friends house. Moving past the idea that i have no idea what i did to deserve this, i am now panicking about cooking it. They are sending a 36oz porterhouse. My issues are stovetop vs grill. the stove is electric and i am not sure he has a great pan, i will go buy one though. if i do it on the stove is grape seed oil an absolute must? or should i cook it on the grill and if i do it that way, slow cook it since i assume it's pretty thick or sear it adn move it away from the heat? as you can see i need help, it's being delivered on thursday so all opinions minus you are spoiled and undeserving are welcome, thanks dave
  7. My go to wing place has always been La Creole on Front near Fitzwater, bit of a dive to be kind but their wings are incredible, as a bonus they frequently had Blackened Voodoo (pre Katrina) to wash them down.
  8. My top 3 The Tartiflette I had in the french alps after a day of skiing. My moms hash browns on sunday mornings growing up and i think someone else had mentioned potatoes cooked with a pork roast with fat dripping all over them.
  9. not to be super fussy but it's a great roll and they should get credit, it's a carangi roll unless they have switched since i have last been there. i moved to denver about 6 months ago, everyone here has their favorite cheesesteak place. i am boycotting until may when i am going to john's to get one steak, one roast pork and one chicken parm sandwich. i have alerted my cardiologist that i will be in town.
  10. so frank bruni paid johns roast pork a visit. he came away less than thrilled, of course a cheesesteak w/everything? link is here http://dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com/200.../#comment-19293
  11. I went to Zengo and Rioja recently, like 2 weeks ago. At Zengo we decided to go with 5 small plates, from the website Angry Zengo spicy yellowfin tuna / avocado / sesame~chipotle rouille / wasabi tobiko this was not great, tasted like tuna fish w/hot sauce Kobe Beef miso mustard / scallions / ponzu this was a sirloin cut according to our server, delicious, 5 pieces which made for fighting between me and my guest Seared Foie Gras pan de elote / plum / habanero / hibiscus reduction this was my favorite as well as my dining companions Empanadas thai chicken / rajas / oaxaca cheese / mango~curry this was ok, nothing i would order again soft shell crab won bok slaw / thai chili / lemon sake aioli / soft tortillas also very tasty and creative so 5 small plates, 3 very good, 2 not so much. I would go back but only b/c i live here not somewhere i would travel for. Rioja was the next nights dinner and we went more traditional 2 apps/2 entrees. we had the duck confit pizza, golden beet soup, roasted colorado leg of lamb and the artichoke tortellini. absolutely everything was cooked perfectly and while everything was quite tasty nothing knocked my socks off. Again I am sure I will be back here at some point, but I am not sure I would go here if this was my only meal in Denver. Dave
  12. Rosie I am a recently transplanted NJ person so i have still not been to as many places in Denver as I would like to have yet. That being said I have been to Potager 4 times in 3 months, it helps that I live around the corner but it has also been consistently top notch. They serve farm fresh local food with the menu changing monthly. While I am not a huge wine drinker, there are quite a few interesting affordable options on there. Here is the address and ph number, if they have a website i don't know where to find it. Potager maps.google.com 1109 Ogden St Denver, CO 80218 (303) 832-5788 enjoy your vacation Dave
  13. i also like eating at the bar at Southwark, near 4th and Bainbridge, last time i checked, no rsvps needed.
  14. thank you for all of the recommendations, I am excited to try each and every one of them.
  15. I just moved to Arlington from Philly and I am looking for good pizza. i am looking for anything from sit down gourmet to by the slice and if there is anywhere at all that serves great sicilian. i am willing to drive large distances for pizza so all suggestions welcome, thanks.
  16. i bought some a few months ago and i am still not exactly sure what to do with it. basically it was so expensive that i want to be able to taste every drop of it. to this end, all i have been able to do it eat it with fresh loaves of Italian bread. what are you using yours for?
  17. Tim I was at Good Dog today for lunch and had my first Good Dog burger, fantastic, cooked perfectly medium rare, oozing cheese. That being said, my go to burger right now is back at the Royal Tavern. I hadn't had a burger there since the cook from Vesuvio took over but I had one two weeks ago and than another and than a 3rd. they are putting bacon, some type of sauce (very descriptive i know, i drink while i am there as well) and roasted hot peppers and they have cooked it exactly medium rare all three times. so if you haven't been in a while, go check it out. is it wrong to have a burger for lunch and dinner?
  18. i am not sure if the fries at the Royal Tavern are thick enough for Holly, but they are my current favorite in Philly, definitely hand cut, blanched and quickly fried, i like mine best with a big fat cheeseburger and a tasty 16 oz beverage.
  19. There is also the outdoor bar/deck on the Moshulu docked near Penns landing
  20. Right in Palmer Square, Winberies has a brunch buffet, all of the usual items and although it's been a while, i remember them having great bloody marys. Winberies One Palmer Square Princeton, NJ 08542 609.921.0700 Phone 609.497.1527 Fax
  21. I haven't been here, i walk by it all of the time but it's very close to Broad and washington. August 1247 S 13th St Philadelphia, PA 19147 2154685926 Cross Street: Wharton Street
  22. I was walking to the Acme last night and saw a sign that says this space is For Rent. Looks like another place in my neighborhood is getting the "can any restaurant make this space work?" label.
  23. i was at brunch there on sunday as well. my favorite of everything i tried, and i think i tried everything, was the duck cooked sous vide with sauteed onions. it was the first time i had eaten anything sous vide, fantastic. while my friends and i were in the kitchen, he asked to taste the wild boar, i started teasing him b/c he won't eat pork generally b/c of the way he perceives pigs to be treated that are raised for meat. he said that since this was "wild" boar it was different. so here is my question, with all of the wild boar that is appearing on menus, in markets, in ravioli, how wild is this really?
  24. Somehow, Iovines has gotten hold of decent beans: green string beans at $1.29, cranberry beans at $0.99, and yellow wax and flat green beans at $1.49. Not many price changes this week, though red and green peppers now both up to $1.49, and Temple oranges have gone to 3/$1 from 4/$1. Featured this week, mango at a buck apiece. i was at Iovines this morning as well and saw the cranberry beans and had absolutely no idea what they were, tasted like, etc. do you eat them whole or shell them? raw/cooked? thanks in advance for the help.

    High Alcohol Beers

Unless it seems like the seal has been broken it is pretty unlikely that the beer has gone bad in any way that would make you sick. I would open it carefully, pour it into a glass. If it explodes out of the bottle or smells off, I might not drink it. Otherwise, I would enjoy your fine aged beer! -Erik ← Thanks for the reply, if anyone else has a 1995 Triple Bock, Sam Adams had this to say when i asked them what it might taste like at this point. 1995 Vintage The '95 is still a bit of a "bad boy":a little rough around the edges, but with a heart of gold. The aroma is reminiscent of the '94, with savory leather thrown in for complexity. The flavor is chocolatey, malty, and earthy, with a dry finish.
