  1. What's the skinny now as of early April?  I called the # and got the message suggesting several times that they are extremely small and they don't recommend making it a "destination" dining experience.

I have a couple of nights next week free for dinner during a business trip next week to DC and wondered what the chances might be of just popping in to get dinner for 2?

Very strange as several weeks ago the message was almost identical except it said Ray's would be closing Sunday, March 26 until further notice. I called last week and the message said simply that Ray's was closed and to check the message board outside the place for updates.

Now that the message is back to old recording (minus the closing part) I'd say go around five thirty or quarter to six or so and see what the status is. We went some weeks ago and a couple ahead of us was told they could be seated (at six) but would have to leave by seven. We were told we could be seated at eight (with no restrictions) and we said okay. Mr. Landrum (Ray) said to leave a cell phone on as he'd call if anything came open earlier. We got no call but were seated when we stopped back at 7:45.

There are many restaurants, bars, stores, etc so it's easy to kill some time in the area if you can get a table after an hour or two. VERY worth it IMHO. DON'T miss the Key lime pie.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  2. I posted this on the Soft Drink forum but it might be better off here. Honcho's - feel free to delete the post on the Soft drink forum if you wish.

    Thanks,

I saw a show on FoodNetwork about soda and they did a piece on Moxie. Can anyone say where to buy it in the greater DC area (or even Baltimore)? I'd prefer not to buy on-line so I can just get a can/bottle or two, and also save on shipping.

    Thanks very much,

    Kevin

  3. Can I just say - EWWWWWWWWWW!

What a stupid gimmick.  There's nothing even remotely interesting or "authentic" about this.  It's pure gimmickry.

I'd be personally quite cautious about this stuff just because I'm pretty severely allergic to other sorts of insect/critter venoms (bee stings, spider bites, jellyfish) so this holds less than no appeal for me.

I agree with you 100%. Some may make the comparison to the whole pear in the bottle of brandy, or even the agave in Mezcal, but to me the scorpion, to quote Hanibal Lecter, is "stupid and wrong".

And while I'm not a prude, I also find the scantily-clad women on their website somewhat offensive, esp. the one with the flickering bikini which to me shouts 'our booze sucks but we feature stinging arachnids and vixens'

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  4. Doesn't Shank & Evelyn's do a cheesesteak along with their amazing cutlet sandwiches?  I think of that place as a luncheonette, not a cheesesteak joint so it might be worth checking out.

Shank & Evelyn's DOES have a great cheesesteak, but it's SO hard to pass up the egplant parm sandwich. Good thing i over-order  for the trip back to D.C.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

Which was for the ride home? How did it hold up?

I've brought both home, but the cheesesteak is better reheated in the oven. The microwave is just okay for the cheesesteak, but the eggplant fails in the microwave.

Of course I've also eaten the second sandwich before I even got to Baltimore.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  5. ..... but the bitter elderly of the neighborhood have already found ways to grind them (carts) into your ankles and block entire isles .....

    Ha!!!!!!!!!

Alas ALL TJ's have smallish spaces and smaller aisles, and they must stock the old people in a warehouse as I've never been to a TJ's that didn't have them.

It's not the perfect store, or even a good all-around store (IMHO), but for the things they carry that others don't and excellent service (didn't like it, here's your money back) it can't be beat.

For the poster above, I'll make it point to be decidedly ungroomed when I next go. There's nothing I can do about being white, but at least I drive a Japanese car.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  7. Don't know where you're located Guy, but most of the Giant stores in D.C./Va./Md. (and other stores too) have the yellow-capped Passover Coke. I think it was on sale last week (or maybe is now) at Giant for 79 cents for 2 liters.

Bigger cities may have the Passover Coke in six-pack cans (12oz.).

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  8. It's not particularly adventuresome, and is more moderate than inexpensive, but Lupo's Italian Chophouse in the heart of College Park makes about the best steaks in the county. Upscale (at least for the college crowd to impress the parents) with tablecloths, but excellent service and not overpriced.

Everyone I know always comes away satisfied.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  9. I've read a fair amount about the 9 beaches resort on the west side. I haven't been, but when I go back, I will likely try it.

The off season in Bermuda has always been November - March so it seems you will be there in the middle of high season and deals aren't as good.

The Frog and Onion is good, as is Dennis' Hideaway, The Spot, and The Lobster Pot. Don't miss the fish chowder and rum swizzles at The Swizzle Inn.

There is a thread on Bermuda eating below (or on page 2) under this category.

    Thanks,

  10. I swear I have seen Paddy's in the US (in a bar in Georgia) but can not for the life of me remember where (& might be confusing it w/ another brand but I am almost certain it was Paddy's).

We just received a new product called Michael Collins (Cooley Distillery/Sidney Frank Importing).  It is getting a big push--lots of promo materials--that is probably related to St. Pat's.  I do not ever remember seeing it before and would appreciate any info.

I don't think Paddy's IS available in the U.S. but no replies verified that.

It seems Mr Collins was an IRA honcho.

Here is a blurb on the whiskey. The bottle looks nice .

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  11. I'm curious if Paddy's is available in the U.S.? I see it is listed on LCBO but I have never seen it in the U.S. and was told they don't export it (yet LCBO has it).

Friends have brought me a couple of bottles back from Ireland, but the omly other time I've seen it in the U.S. is in the movie On The Waterfront.

    Thanks for any info.

  12. Too get back on track I also Hate Bacardi Gold, and I don't like the 8yr old so much either.

Though we disagree on the Bacardi 8yr old, the raging cat was the smile of the week!!

    Thanks,

    Kevin

Hello Kevin, I liked the Raging Cat also, The Cat may have offended some cat lovers and was removed. :(

Bought another Bottle of Bacardi 8yr old to give it a second shot. The 8yr old is a lot better than Bacardi Gold. However the 8 yr old still has the same Barcardi signature aftertaste as the Gold.

I think for the money, I would rather have a Bottle of Bacardi Anejo which is the only Bacardi Rum I have found so far that I seem to like.

I'll keep trying to find the Best Rum, and I'm sure I'll come across some more to add to the Worst collection.

It seems the girl with the large pillows on the race car was also deemed offensive .

I know what you mean in re Bacardi, and haven't bought any in years (the 8yo was a gift). I have a bottle of Pusser's Navy which will likely last years and years and I find it almost undrinkable. I bought a bottle of Pusser's Painkiller mix, but that didn't help.

My membership in the Dark Side is born of Cruzan Navy Blackstrap & Cola

    Thanks,

  13. In September 2005 I started a business called "Simply Sausage, Inc.™". I'm making fresh sausages in Landover, MD, (USDA-approved facility).

Indeed, where can we buy your products?

And do you aspire to be the Abe Froman of Landover?

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  14. I bought a bottle of the Claude Chatelier VSOP and I think it's pretty good. As I said, I've not much experiance with Cognac, but I've has some that were very smooth and easy to sip, and some that made me gasp and cough.

I wouldn't think for a minute that is comparable to a 'name brand' VSOP that goes for $60 or $70, but for a good everyday Cognac (and at a very reasonable price) this would be good for both cooking and drinking.

Now off to buy sirlions and cherry pie filling .

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  15. Has anyone had Claude Chatelier VSOP?  It's on sale near me for $14.99 (reg. 18.99) and both prices seem low for a VSOP, but I've little experience with Cognac .

    Thanks very much,

    Kevin

Heck - for that price it's worth checking out. At worst, you can have a lot of flambeed food in your future. You do enjoy Steak Diane and Cherries Jubilee dontcha?

Thanks Katie. I was thinking along those lines but was a little leery as it seemed TOO cheap. I'll give it a go and report back. Can I flame Comstock cherry pie filling for an ersatz Jubilee

  16. Sorry if this is old news, but I just called and the recording says due to circumstances beyond their control, Ray's can no longer take reservations. They will seat parties up to 6 on a first come, first served basis (don't about larger parties). All current reservations will be honored.

The recording also says Ray's will be closed Sunday March 26th until further notice. Maybe in prep for Silver Spring.

    Thanks,

    Kevin
