  1. BTW, I've been to Coco Bolos many times and have had good and bad experiences. Their Tex-Mex cuisine certainly isn't groundbreaking.

I would have to politely disagree! It certainly is groundbreaking for Manhattan, KS, or the rest of Kansas in general for that matter... excluding Lawrence and Kansas City. I've always had excellent food there.

    Judy,

I wouldn't exactly call it Tex-Mex... it's no On the Border! I don't really know how to describe it... there's a little bit of Caribbean/ Jamaican influence, but some Mexican as well. Their specials are always outstanding, and my boyfriend claims the best steak he ever had was at Coco Bolo's! Their taters are TO DIE FOR! It's definitely worth the trip to Manhattan, for us. Of course, then we have to go to Chapman Fly Shop, but I'll suffer for the food!

No info yet... I just need to call them... might do that this afternoon!

What makes this food groundbreaking? Im curious to see what kind of beef they use as well.

  2. Just had breakfast for the first time...

I tried getting breakfast one time but I got the lunch menu so I figured it was too late but this time I asked about it and they were still offering breakfast around 11ish so the server brought both lunch and breakfast menus.

Spanish Omelet is good stuff.. and the place was BUSY! It makes me happy to see places like RM 39 do well.. Probably my favorite restaurant to eat anytime of the day. I need to come in for Dinner, looking forward to it ... hmm I've got a couple of days off, maybe I'll go in again.

  3. Well I hear they are selling there Coral Gables Location... wow Im suprised you didnt have a good meal there! I've only heard good things... its good to see mixed reviews though.

Where did you hear/see that? I can't find any news of what you say anywhere. Robyn

A lady told me over the phone in a brief conversation... I said something about wanting to eat there sometime this fall and she mentioned that they were selling that location. Not sure about anything else though.

  4. I dropped into today around lunch hour to take a look at their menu (didn't eat there).  It's written up on a board - a selection including a coulple of chicken options (Normandie as JWest described it was one), Salmon Meuniere, a Nicoise salad, and some others (maybe a pasta?).... oh and a "Quiche of the Day."

Sadly, there wasn't a single soul inside eating...

I didn't get to see the dessert menu.  Is there an option?  Does anyone know?

    u.e.

I remember having an option of the Tiramisu, Chocolate Mousse, and couple of other options...

  5. So, the KC Toaster deal didn't work out but Tatsu isn't finished with the location on Westport Road.

I went in for lunch and they've turned things around by pretty much making it into a second Tatsu's French Restaurant but in a more of relaxed way. No table cloths, no carpeting, and cut the price ... now you have Tatsu's Cafe and Bar.

I ate at the bar and the owner of Habachi happened to be sitting there eating lunch. It was very slow, mainly because I think they had just recently re opened the doors. The bar is set up and if he hasn't already they are trying to get their liqour license. Bar looks much more contemporary than the one at the Original Tatsu's.

The lunch special is a deal! I recieved a drink, bread service, a large entree, dessert, and coffee for # 11.99. I had my favorite dish from Tatsu's, its the same thing I get everytime too. The Chicken Normandy was excellent, although a little more creamier than the ones I've had at the other location. Then I had the Tiramisu which he has in a Martini Glass instead of a plate. So as you can see he's serving the same fine dining cuisine but without the foo foo.

So instead of the sandwich shop you are getting a scaled down version of Tatsu's French Restaurant at Tatsu's Cafe and Bar. I think its great because now people who want to eat Tatsu's food don't have to get dressed up and pay up for what would be a larger tab.

I've got some pictures that I'll have uploaded to the comp later...

  6. If anyone sees it again, could someone please record it in any way and send it to me please! Im very desperate to get my hands on a copy of this episode, the only problem is that I live in the States :hmmm: . Im willing to give a reward as well.

I have also been looking out for this for a while.

we'll have to keep eachother posted if we find a copy of it!

  9. I wonder why Alinea didn't win the Beard Award for Best New Restaurant? With all the mega-hype and so many here saying it's already one of the best restaurants in the country despite being in its' infancy, one would think it would have been a lock. I'd like to know what people here think about this.

    Only 1 reason . . . it isn't in NYC.

    =R=

I know this might not be in the right area,(please direct me to the correct thread if wrong) but imho it is relevant to my earlier query...I was also suprised about the winner for Rising Star Chef-even though he's the chef de cuisine at French Laundry, it's not really his restaurant, it's Keller's, right? Meaning Keller would be the one who determines what the menu is, etc. Am I off base? One thinks of French Laundry as Keller's restaurant, not Corey Yee. Seemed odd to me, that's all, especially with someone like Graham Elliot Bowles in charge of the kitchen, making the menu and cooking full time.

I understand traditionally the Chef De Cuisine is in charge of the kitchen and usually has a lot of input with the menu if not all of it. Also, If memory serves me right..Bowles is a Chef De Cuisine as well? With the Laundry, Keller isn't there everyday because of his other 4 locations (bouchons and per se). Also, Benno of Per Se was awarded a Best New Chef of Food & Wine. Benno and Lee run there respective locations as an extension of Chef Keller. This is only my guess but Keller probably lets them run the kitchen themselves because he knows they will be running it the way he wants to be ran. I hope that makes sense.

  10. I find that the Brown Palace's Palace Arms Restaurant was very exceptional...

You're in a classic dining room with new and improved menu with some classics like caesar salad that have been slipt here and there in throughout the menu..

check the blog for pictures and a review..

Also, Vesta Dipping Grill is a fun place if you are looking for a group dinner (of like 4 to 6) that has a little bit of fine dining with a casual and hip style. They are open considerably late for Denver, midnight.

Table 6 is a one of my favorite casual dining destinations, you sit down with some friends and have a couple of bottles of wine and order tons of appetizers and get a dessert platter with some nice cheeses and you can't think of a better thing to do that night.

  11. I've never seen indigenous ramps here, although we do  have wild onions growing at the lake where I live.

I have friends ~15 miles west who have been picking morels for more than a week now.  I've been out looking in my usual spot but haven't seen any, nor have I seen them in the markets but expect to this weekend.

I have lots of green garlic and many of the farmers at the expos the last two weekends have been selling it.

The Brookside market opens this weekend.  I made it to the Overland Park market after the northland expo last week but it was pretty thin still.  We've had considerably warmer weather this week so I expect great things on Saturday.

wow sounds great, my father does a lot of morel hunting and he was a little sad about the lack of rain going on... but i t didn't sound like he even went out and tried this year either... so oh well.. thanks for the update! cant wait to be back..
