  1. I offer group as well as individual cooking classes to those who are interested in eating healthy. Check out my website at Laurileeshealthycooking.net Thank you!
  2. Any of that group of french bistro type places throughout the city. Marseilles-theater district Nice Matin-upper west side Pigalle-theater district I find the food to be very good, and reasonable at all of the above places. Nice atmospheres, and yet not too fancy, but the food is great and the menu offers a nice selection of things french and otherwise.
  3. I don't know if its me or does every chinese restaurant go downhill after awhile? Used to love Lotus Cafe, now I find their sauces too salty and heavy. I try to order the lighter stuff and still its covered in heavy, salty sauces and way too oily. What a shame. Went last nite and haven't felt good all day. Guess I'll stick to vietnamese!
  4. In the summer look for 'orange flesh melon" The most beautiful thing on earth!
  5. We're always seeking out vietnamese places because we love it. Mostly go to NYC, OR Montclair but wanted something closer. TC'S we found disappointing. Although the place itself is nicer than most of them we've been to, the prices are probably twice as much . Maybe we're not ordering right, but what we like usually, we didn't love here. In Spring Valley, just across the border from where we live in N.J. we found a gem of a place Its called VIETNAM restaurant, you take chestnut ridge rd all the way down thru the town of Spring Valley and eventually come to it on the right. Its a small little storefront, tiny place but the food was authentic and just wonderful. We had the most delicious crispy crepe stuffed with beansprouts and shrimp, they serve it with curly lettuce leaves, fresh mint and a nice sauce. You wrap this all together and it is pure heaven! And so light. Then an outrageous wonton soup vietnamese style which is much lighter and flavorful then the chinese version. Then we each had a bowl of rice noodles mine with honey glazed chicken, my hubs with pork. Served with slivers of cucumber, marinated carrot slivers, crushed peanuts and some sauce and herbs on the side. Yummy. Oh and the shrimp spring or summer rolls were great too.l All in all we were very happy and couldn't eat dinner last nt. This was a great lunch. We also got a take out of their papaya salad for our vegan kid at home and it was very nice and different. Fresh, flavorful and everything was so light and didn't make u sick with heavy sauces and msg and all that crap.
  6. I came upon this thread re Roberto's while looking for a recommendation for a place on arthur ave. Had a fine lunch at Rigoletto's today and would go back because the food is good and they have a parking lot. Went to Roberto's only for lunch last year and didn't like it. I agree that if a restaurant is great, you should be happy with anything you order. If I remember correctly we were disappointed in most everything we had. You'd think if you're willing to make the trip to the Bronx, you would be able to find extraordinary food or you might as well just stay at your neighborhood italian place. I know the food they sell in the market is extraordinary so which restaurant has food that is really 'out of this world?" is what I want to know. Maybe I'm just too picky, but I am not a lover of Batali's restaurants either. Even the salad at Robertos was bad.
  7. I AGREE WITH YOU COMPLETELY. Where do you go on Arthur ave for a great dinner?
  8. Okay, so maybe we should start a new category with Felidia - Upscale, refined Italian-American. Never been to Becco, will try it. ← I agree Becco is better than Felidia. Felidia was the most disappointing , overpriced, horrible meal ... The food was nothing like Lidia's on tv. It was bland, and I can make better food at home. What a total rip off. Becco at least has that great antipasto, and some pretty decent pasta, and prices are great.
  9. I agree that Al Forno is a must, but realize it is very expensive. The pizza with corn fresh from the farm last summer was the best I ever had. I would stick with pizza and salad there. If you want the best pasta dishes and great seafood and risottos our favorite in Providence by far was Siena!! It was reasonable and top of the line. The freshest fish, and pasta to die for. Great service too. Start with the eggplant parm appetizer, it was soooo good in a nice casserole dish. I only wish there was a Siena in NYC or stupid Bergen county. SIENA, go there, I think you'll be very happy on Atwell.
  10. They also made the restaurant a little more formal than it had been as Istanbul. Not by much, but a bit. ← Mediterranea is very good . Like their appetizers and salads and food in general. Nice cozy atmosphere, good music. Interesting menu, good quality ingredients. Lisa'a Turkish I gave up after going lots. More and more disappointed with each meal. Finally decided its diner food. Just giving a 2008 update!
  11. So happy to read this very favorable review. I WAS their biggest fan until the last two dinners. The service was just awful. Both times we ordered a 2 pound lobster with ginger and scallions and received nods and smiles from the waiter , waitress. Both times we got one and 1/4 pounders, with 30 dollar price tags. They were great but just not what we wanted. We wound up having to order another dish! Really pissed us off, so since we know the manager and said something, he brought the price down to 28 bucks! I still wanted to read a good review because I think their dimsum is the best and unusual and as good as anywhere in flushing or nyc chinatown. I will go back now, cuz I just have to have it. The lobster thing I don't know what I'll do about that because for valentines day I would like to get a real 2 pounder, there, in front of me, in real life!! MAYBE, I'll try again....
  12. Speaking of whole foods ...I shop there and love their chicken but I find that their pork does not look good. Why is that? I once bought packaged, sealed, baby back ribs and I opened them up and they stunk. So, I brought them back and the butcher told me they put some kind of 'gas' in there to preserve it!! NEVER AGAIN.. Has anyone noticed the pork is not a very appetizing color, their chopped pork, their chops, their filets....I wonder why? I'm talking about the Ridgewood NJ store.
  13. So funny you guys were just there. We went tonite and loved it. Decided to browse e gullet to see if you had any reviews about it. Wouldn't u know, u were just there too!! We have been disappointed with Dim Sum Dynasty the last couple of times. The sauces were too salty and heavy. So, I said to my hub , 'Lets go to that little place in Hackensack,' and we did. I finally now know the name. I think its great, regular, traditional chinese , as well as authentic different dishes. Similar to what u might get in Chinatown. The filet of sole with ginger and scallions was delicious as was the roast pork with sting beans. Everything I've ever gotten there has been great and its CHEAP, and the service is excellent. I'm gonna try some of those dishes pictured, they look amazing. Thanks for that.
  14. i suppose i'll start with this one: entrees (from the SOB website:) 19 23 26 25 22 25 18 26 27 28 26 average = 24.09. not too far off the 25 dollar mark. if i have time later i'll try to explain why people have lower expectations when prices are lower. honestly i don't know if i'll be able to come up with anything more simple than "people have lower expectations when prices are lower." hank, now, i'd appreciate it if you could response to *my* queries here. thanks in advance. ← This whole thread about Silver Oak is such a turn off. What is e gullet? A site to learn about restaurants and where to go eat. This is such catty bullshit that I now wonder what kind of people belong here and why they're being so vicious. Constructive criticism is one thing, but I think here you've gone too far. The web site has the prices and pics of the place. Please just comment on the food and what u think of it all and all and stop the nonsense already. Silver Oak is a good neighborhood place IF you like that kind of food. Its certainly not for everyone. The end.
  15. Funny Rachel but we took friends to Wondee's last nt and they didn't love it. Be careful, its not for everyone!! I love their soup, my friend liked Thai House's food better altogether. I need to try Ridge thai for dinner, was it crowded? I still think Thai house in Nyack is the best with the nicest atmosphere, best service and great food. U should go try it again!!
  16. yes, the owner is so gracious and nice. Food to me , was disappointing although the place is spacious and pretty. Been there 3 times now and was most disappointed with the pad thai. Tiny shrimp, thats a turn off right away. They have some interesting , different fish dishes for a thai place like chilean sea bass. Portion was small and not worth the money. Try the newest Thai in Ridgewood, Ridge Thai. It is small but the pad thai I had for lunch was excellent and the food smelled great. Our favorites are still the place in hackensack wondee, although its a ride for us but worth it because its so inexpensive, portions are huge and its bring your own. And, Thai House in Nyack never disappoints us and we've going there for many years.
  17. How about Houston's...I 'm not sure how their martini's are, and I know their wine portion is shabby but I love their food!! From the freshest fish (i love the fish sandwich) to the ribs, to the salads and I've only had the veggie burger, its the best food around. I'm sure the hamburgers are good . All their meats, fish and veggies are top quality. Even their tomatoes are big red beefsteaks. And that hot fudge sundae for dessert is like nothing I've ever had! Oh, and the sides, cous cous like no other, fries like they should be everywhere etc etc etc. Only prob, hard to get in and they don't take res...
  18. Roxanne's is a very nice pub style atmosphere, brick oven pizza , nice big salads, good pastas, and sandwiches. Try it you'll like it. Nice bar...
  19. Wow Rachel your dinner looks fantastic. I never cook lobster at home as I'm afraid to kill it but what u did gave me an idea. We had dinner at dim sum dynasty and it was incredible and cheap. 4 of us ate for around 70 a couple I think. We started with many appetizers... baby crispy ribs with ginger and scallions an assortment of steamed dumplings, all interesting tasting and yummy (shu mai, snow pea greens and shrimp etc) Who rem's we had a bottle of champagne and ketel 1 on the table! Chicken with pine nuts in lettuce leaves Crispy shrimp rolls Lobster with ginger and scallions Peking pork chops..they were just how I remembered them when we used to go to Chinatown in Flushing many years ago...they were lean, crispy and the sauce was sweet and delicious Chow fun special they made for us with baby bok choy and chinese broccoli. I have not one complaint about anything and the service was terrific. They couldn't do enough for us... Its so great to have a restaurant like this in Ridgewood and now we don't have to travel to silver pond in ft lee and I actually like these people a lot more. Enjoy, and I hope to see you for dimsum today!! Although, I'm on salt and msg overload, I can start back on my 'healthy eating' tomorrow !!
  20. 4 of us ate there Sat nt and were not that impressed. Service was great, place is small and we won't go back. Food was mediocre and thats all I can say. Different strokes .... But, all four of us agreed, not thrilled.

    Pongsri Thai

Went to the one in the theater district. The food was great, reasonable and the people there were gracious. We were very happy. Had all our regular thai faves and they were as good or better than our favorite thai places in n.j. and nyack.
