  1. Get a life Bapi these people that claim they are'rearing their own pigs or whatever are deceiving customers it would require a herd of several hundred pigs to kill one every couple of weeks and then they would have numerous complaints about the smell.I know been their done it.

How utterly marvellous for you. Perhaps if I had bothered to rear a couple of my own, then I too could deign to be quite so patronising as you.

To quote their website " All our meat is from local farms and is free range, including our own Milestone exclusive rare breed pigs, born and raised in Sheffield".

So it would appear I made an erroneous assumption after watching that Ramsay programme of old. The Milestone actually ask others to rear the pigs for them to use. One can only hope that the quote isn't an egregious lie and that the chaps at The Milestone don't actually pop down to Morrisons before service. I am less of a cynic and so would tend to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Suitably chastened, I shall depart to "get a life". Perhaps a Monastic vow of silence with a little, light self flagellation thrown in. Who knows?

Incidentally, Sidney-should you need any help in understanding when to use "there" and "their" in a sentence, my seven year old is currently learning this at school and would be delighted to help.

  2. Casual red chilli, akbars, aagah in york/a64

This is how I invariably feel after a day out with you. Talking of which - are we sorted for December?

Sorry, back on topic- I really need to get to the Pipe & Glass. Everything I have seen and read makes want to go there, and with any luck, thanks to Mission Control, that should now happen before Christmas.

  3. One thing we used to do when our kids were young is to out for lunch somewhere nice. Normally if you time it right you can get there when they just nod off, and then you have 45 minutes for lunch.

I would agree with this wholeheartedly. By the time ours had reached 6 months, he had a 3 star and numerous 2 and 1 stars under his belt. I remember pushing him round the streets of Ludlow for thirty minutes and then, the instant he was asleep, charging like a mad man towards Hibiscus to join the missus for our lunch. Managed to get to pudding before he awoke. At that age they can be easily whisked away, should they create. Not so easy as they approach toddlerhood. So enjoy yourself and have a good trip.

  4. Howard- I get the feeling you'll be well looked after when you return.

May 09 2010 Trip Advisor review by some daft sod. Sat picks them up on their spelling of Nouvelle Cuisine. But I rather liked the last sentence.......

"One reviewer wrote "food is a subjective experience", I agree totally but there are some things that you know are .................wrong and Sat Bains's there is just something wrong or lacking. Perhaps my pallet is more accustomed to a French style."

  5. I would concur re Tripadvisor and pay it scant attention. Not a recent meal but we had a fabulous lunch there a couple of years back but have struggled to find the opportunity to head back to Wales. So Sarah- I would just book and go.

As an aside, I was bloody delighted to hear that former Ludlow residents Shaun Hill, Claude Bosi and Glynn Purnell are setting up a pop up restaurant at this years Food Festival. So it looks like I will get to try Shaun's food again in a couple of months.

  6. I'm in the North West, Lancaster. I fancy going whereever, probably a day in the North East, then two days down South starting this Monday!

The only place I've had on my mind is somewhere called British Larder in Suffolk because I followed the girl's food blog a few years previous to her opening the place. Not heard any reviews of the place yet.

Actually, there was this from last year- I remembered it as we stay close by in Orford.

  7. Im with Sunbeam all the way on this one. Another celeb tv chef/ travel presenter, game show host, clown (they are all so multi talented these days!!) opening yet another souless cash cow is about exciting to me as dishwater. Will Mr M have anything to do with the cooking, narrgh, they never do, except maybe for the undoubted flash media opening. Is this really what folk want now? Says alot if so.

No it most certainly isn't Richard. There is more chance of me selling our six year old into child slavery than ever setting foot in an establishment linked to the immature Mr Martin- and I only live half an hour away.

  8. If you can afford it Hambleton Hall, just outside Oakham, probably makes just inside a fifty mile radius of Coventry. Very old school country house hotel luxury, but the food is modern enough - and fantastic.

I agree- we lunched there on the way back from Bray a couple of weeks ago. Fabulous location and luckily the weather was just beautiful, meaning we could enjoy an aperitif outside on the terrace. Excellent canapes- who knew, I like goats cheese and mango paired together and the little nugget of foie gras parfait was delicious. Sadly my first course was below par. Duck served cold three ways, but with an ill judged orange foam that was far too acidic and which destroyed the subtle flavour of the duck. The Moo cow faired much better with a canneloni of squid paired with chorizo underneath which was a "risotto" of squid. This was actually tiny little pearls of squid cooked quite beautifully. We both opted for the veal served with an exquisite sweetbread ravioli, the pasta being as thin as Kylie's pants. The reduction served with it was a thing of joy too and the Saint Aubin, for about 30 squidlies, knocked the Puligny Montrachet in Bray the night before, out of the park and was about a quarter of the bloody price. Service from Graeme Matheson and team is charm personified too, such that the Missus wants to go back for a big birthday next year- along with family. I would say how old but I would rather like to keep my testicles. I'll root out a couple of photos of the food and place if it's not too difficult to upload.

  9. Gary, you are a cheeky sod but sadly quite correct, my beloved Millbank in my village, has closed. I too would suggest a lunch or dinner at El Gato. I went again last week and every dish was spot on. Only open for lunch on Friday and sat now and from 3pm till 8pm on Sunday. Dinner us wednesday onwards. Make sure you book though, it was filling up rapidly when I popped in at 6.30 to make a booking. PM me for more details and best way to get there by all means Ian.

  10. Bloody hell David, yet again you've beaten me to visiting somewhere on my list. All looks very good, so must venture over there very soon. I am fairly sure that Steven Smith will be doing a demo at Thom's Restaurant show in March. I remember an article about the place which focused on the wine list which was supposed to offer exceptionally good value. How did you find it?

  11. Glad that you seem and the family appeared to have enjoyed your trip over and that food was enjoyable. Funnily enough, the squid dish was the one that I didn't get the full benefit of when we were there last, but that was due to it arriving last and me having no space left in the tank! Simon was saying he is introducing a new menu soon which will include many of his classic and most popular dishes from the last few years. Cheers for your report.
