  1. Anyone have any suggestions for Vernon? Lunch/dinner/Sunday breakfast - any recommendations at all would be welcome. Thanks!
  2. I had some of these churros the other night with my mother, who had never heard of such a thing and was somewhat bemused that I had dragged her out in the rain to what looked like a little hole-in-the-wall juice bar. She was thrilled when they arrived, though - as was I. We chose the Dulce de leche sauce and the churros were hot and crisp. They were fresh fresh fresh, sweet, crunchy and delicious. I will definitely go back. PS IMO, (confirmed chocaholic) Starbucks' chanticos are delicious and thick (too sweet? pshaw!), but they do tend to render you useless for productive activity for some time after indulging... Best on cold, rainy days.
  3. As a born (almost, moved there when I was one) and bred Smithereen, I have to say that the attractions of the Bulkley Valley (and there are many) are admittedly not focused on the culinary. Good, even excellent restaurants tend to come and go rather quickly (the current chef/owner of Paprika in Victoria once operated a lovely little restaurant on Main St called the Little Onion)... However, when I lived in Smithers (coming up on 13 years ago), you could get a good bowl of soup and slice of triple berry or chocolate pecan pie from Java's, you could get some delicious Chinese from the North Star, yummy pizza from Vera's, and wonderful pepper chicken from 4th St Deli in Telkwa. I know that the last in that list is now gone, but are the others still around...Viola? All in all, probably the best way to go in Smithers is to dust off the barbeque, and create your own culinary gems as you enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. I love Smithers in the summer. (avec le bugspray, of course)
  4. After receiving the French Laundry Cookbook for a surprise late Christmas gift you spend an hour just smiling to yourself and stroking the cover.
  5. As an expatriate Victorian, I have many fond memories of eating at Herald Street. HSC's caesar salad still stands as one of the best I've ever had (I'm very picky about caesars...both the cocktail and the salad!). For lunch in Victoria, may I suggest Ferris's Oyster Bar or ReBar...the former has an eclectic menu and delicious sweet potato fries, the latter is probably my favourite restaurant in Victoria, for breakfast, lunch or dinner. If this tells you anything, ReBar is a vegetarian restaurant, and I am decidedly NOT a vegetarian. It's pretty casual, but consistently delicious. The ReBar cookbook is fun, too...
  6. My first post after eons (3 years!!) of lurking... My perennial dessert fallback is a chocolate mousse cake with raspberry coulis. It's the only "from memory" dessert recipe remaining in my brain from my brief stint baking in a restaurant in the early nineties. It was an in-house recipe but an old Martha Stewart version came close, if I remember. I sometimes add (if I am feeling particulary frisky) hazelnut (frangelico) tinged whipped cream. When I'm really in a rush, though, trifle has proven to be a good (albeit slapdash!) option. People generally circle around it with doubt and trepidation in their eyes (big bowl full of whippedy-fruity-boozey-cakey mush) but after the first bite, it always disappears quickly. Good comfort food, UK style.
