  1. I have to say that I went to Parkside two years ago for Dine out and it was the best experience I had during the Dine out promotion. I still have the memory of their sticky chocolate pudding with caramel sauce and ice cream imprinted on my taste buds. I (heart) Parkside! I'm finding that lots of other restaurants are going down that slippery slope of dumb-afying their food or making smaller portions in order to make money during the promotion period. Maybe they should just have another price range $25, 35 and 45? Why ruin my image of your restaurant with miniature, lacklustre food? That being said, I did go to Raincity Grill this year and had an amazing meal with decent portions for Dine out. I went with a friend that ordered the $45 tasting menu featuring local ingredients. All of it was bite sized portions of complex tastes and aromas. The funny thing was that he couldn't recognize what anything was - the wait staff told us and we promply forgot - but it tasted great! It's amazing what you can do with honey when you don't have any sugar!
  2. Hi Foodies on a sunny May day, I'm organizing a group of 50 from around the world that want to have authentic Japanese food at a restaurant downtown. Any suggestions? Please help, I'm drawing a blank! All the places I love (Guu, Gyoza King) are way too small. Woook
  3. I don't understand this ... why can't you say if it was good? Did you like the pie? If so, it was good I like Savary Island except for its layout. When it's busy, there's really nowhere to stand while you're waiting. But the pie is worth the wait IMO. I just hate being in the way ... A. ← Yes, I understand, it's hard to understand the nuance of pie unless you have something to compare it to. Personally, I prefer the ghetto goodness of the apple tarts at New Town Bakery in Chinatown. Be forwarned that you have to take the abuse at the counter because the prices are sooo cheap. Also, my mom's Apple pie is amazing. . .(There's a kiss up job if I ever saw one; too bad she doesn't know how to use the internet ). Other treats that should be a food group: My co-workers and I are obsessed with the miniature cake doughnuts covered in icing powder that are available at IGA, safeway etc. For me, it brings back memories of my grandfather. But I guess "good memory" foods should always be considered a separate food group.
  4. Adventurous like they let you eat while riding horseback and wrestling alligators? ← Hmmm, I smell the next reality TV craze! Of course everybody would have to sign their life away first. (:
  5. Hey all, I wondering if I can get some advice from you foodie gurus. I'm looking for a good Persian restaurant for the adventurous eater. Not anywhere extremely expensive. I found a couple restaurants online and I'm wondering if anybody has been there? Any other suggestions would be great as well. Caspian Restaurant 1495 Marine, W. Van., 604-921-1311 Persepolis Restaurant, 112 West 13th St., N. Vancouver, 990-1004. Kash Cool Persian Restaurant 222 Pemberton Ave. N. Vancouver. 604-904-3904 Eat well, Woook
  6. The restaurants in Leg-In-Boot sq in False Creek seem pretty bad. I used to work at Le Physique near the Buy Low there and it seems like that corner Thai restaurant, even though it had a fantastic view of the water, went through three or four iterations.
  7. Hihi, Thanks for all the great suggestions. I like the thought of trying out Sweet Obsessions or the place in Richmond. I also googled diplomat cakes in Vancouver and came up with a couple of other hits. Has anybody tried out the Diplomat cake at Valley Bakery in Burnaby, or Fratelli's on Commercial St? And BTW, freezing the cake is a GREAT idea, although I can't say that I'm that organized at the moment (oops!)
  8. Hi all, My mother's birthday is unfortunately timed on January 8 after Christmas so that her favourite diplomat cake from Bon Ton bakery is not available due to holiday closures. Every year I run into the same problem and every year we've been disapointed by the replacement cakes which are a pale soggy shadow of what the Bon Ton cake is like. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what bakery I should try this time? Thanks for the advice, Woook
