  1. I agree Feenie's short rib sandwich was good. But the Feenie pizza was a different story, the server mentioned that the pizza was not very popular (an omen!) Ever tried eating a mini pizza after an hour in the oven? That's what it tasted like. When did C run out of food? We got there around 1pm but there was nothing on the table. Did the food come in late? Or did everyone line up at C at noon?
  2. There's 5 more that I could think of: 1. geoduck temaki (didn't know geoduck was really crunchy - in a spicy sauce) 2. fried crab (?) ball with sauce - it wasn't explained to me when served 3. thinly sliced sashimi (about 6-8 pieces) - no mention of what it was 4. sweet prawn nigiri 5. mackerel nigiri - more fish than rice - just how I like it I assumed the cucumber wrapped roll was the northern lights roll. Any other place it would be the same roll day in and day out, but not Tojo's. Note: the "halibut" coated in toasted millet/rice crackers/rice balls was probably flounder. Probably a version of the halibut cheeks.
  3. I had to do a double take: "Feenie’s crab maki happy face" came out as "Feenie’s crapy maki happy face" Went to Tojo's recently, pics 1, 2, 6-8 and 10 were served. Instead of the sablefish we were served a halibut (?) encrusted with rice balls (either baked or fried) with a nice sauce (OK- I have sort term food memory). We were also served halibut (nigiri sized) with rock salt, small piece of grapefruit and cucumber (?), just roll it up and enjoy. The unagi sunomono was fantastic! I believe #10 is the northern nights roll (freshly fried prawn, mango, asparagus and some other stuff). I had about 15 plates, SO about 11 plates. Damage was a respectable $320 for both of us (add drinks/tax/tip). After about 7 plates the head waiter will ask if you wish for more or stop.
  4. 1. Friday night went to Bentei Sushi (strip mall on Broadway off Holdom), Japanese owned (and yes I must say that). Food was quite good, had the california combo (4 pieces nigiri and a california roll- $8) and 3 spicy tuna rolla ($2.25per). SO had an udon, chicken kaarage (appy) and a chopped scallop roll. Total was $30 plus tip. There are not many places in N. Burnaby for "good" sushi, I would return to this place. Also anyone been to the new(er) sushi place by Hastings across from Happy Honda? 2. Sunday Lunch: Vera's on Denman (it was either Fatburger/Vera's....Vera's/Fatburger...Fatburger/Vera's...) ok it was Vera's. Had the Doug Burger (open faced 2 patties with chili $8.95). The patty was very good, had red relish on it and forgot how "sour" red relish was. The chili was average, did not sense much flavour in the chili. SO enjoyed the vera with mushrooms ($5.50). Ordered fries for the little one, they looked greasy when I picked then up (yes they were hot and must of been out of the fryer). I would go back and start with a more basic burger. 3. Sunday night: KFC (Hastings and Alpha/Beta), ordered 2 pieces for the little one, fed him the meat only and I had the yummy skin an hour later. Load and behold 10mins after I ate the skin he had (afa we know) he had a tummy ache, and that kind of carried onto me. Crying/screaming (a la Mariah Carey)....screaming/crying...him not me. Calmed down when mommy was holding him, went to emergency, he was still acting restless. After an hour waiting he was well enough to start playing with the toys there. OK give the wristband back to reception and went home. Now where did place the Pam-An approved PETA membership form?????
  5. On a similar topic, any private rooms (in restaurants/bars/pubs downtownish) available to watch a hockey game? Celebrating with a group of friends.
  6. A little off topic but: My first (dinner/lunch/dinner/lunch - all in a row) and only experience with fish tacos ($1.50) were in San Diego at Rubio's (http://www.rubios.com/) last week. They use pollock with cabbage, salsa and some secret sauce. Very simple and very good. They also use (yellow?) corn tortilla (taco size) instead of the white (corn?) tortilla one gets here at Safeway. Their food is cooked to order but it's worth the wait. I also tried the shrimp taco and lobster burrito. Both are very good. Yes, I have nothing to compare against but I will give Go Fish a try soon.
  7. Friday was lunch at Costco (Burnaby), that counts doesn't it? Has their classic hot dog and pop (1.99) and their Montreal smoked meat sandwich (4.99). I'm sure most of what you buy at their counter is available in their aisles. Hot dog was nothing to complain about (toasted bun would be good). The sandwich was not bad, a good inch of smoked meat in a sourdough (?) triangular bread, and a couple limp pickles. Would I go back? Definitely!! Sunday lunch at Horizons, had the west coast seafood chowder and aldergrilled wild bc salmon (lemon tarragon butter). Chowder was in the peppery side, only seafood I would find was salmon and clams (plus bacon). Looking at their web site there's no details with regards to their chowder so I guess they put in the leftovers. Grilled Salmon was tender and not bad, bit too much butter for my liking, accompaniments were home fried potatoes and home cut fruit. Potatoes were sliced and sauteed with onions and ?. Would I go back? Probably with a 2 for 1 coupon Sunday dinner at Cafe Kathmandu (finally!!), Appetizers: chicken choilaa and chicken momo. The choilaa was enjoyable, chicken cubes with cilantro(?) (well you read the menu: http://www.cafekathmandu.com/menu.html). The taste and texture of the momo's was what I remembered 3 years ago in Nepal, but unfortunately they were wrapped in won ton wrapping (as per previous threads) which made than look like xiaolong bao's. I have made momo's myself but will have to say a homemade wrapping is a pita to make but well worth it at the end. The dipping sauce was mild (as requested) and very good accompaniment to the momo's. Main: Dhal Bhat with goat curry was a bit of a disappointment, the dhal is basmati rice, bhat is yellow lentils, goat curry not bad but a bit tough and cabbage (?) achaar. The bhat was the dissapointing part, it was rather bland (not what I remembered), requested hot sauce to liven it up. Maybe I was expecting too much from this place. Would I go back? Only if the momo wrapping were more hands on. I can skip the dhal bhat.
  8. The "main" entrance I meant is the pedestrian entrance (from hotel info), sorry for the confusion. Thanks for the replies, I will keep them in mind. We'll probably be eating outside of DL as he'll be napping in hotel in the afternoon. Keith
  9. Are there any local restaurants you recommend within walking distance from main entrance to DL? We don't have access to a car but would like to eat properly without resorting to big chain fast food. We have a 2yo with an 45 min attention span. TIA, Keith
  10. "... the person who answered the phone who spoke next to no English" Oooh, it must be authentic then! It the place kid friendly? vandan, do they serve thukpa? buff momo's?

  12. I'll give Seven Seas a call. My first taste was in '95 (mid Feb) in Corpus Christi, table for 1 with 5lbs of crawfish all to myself. My 2nd and last taste were purchased live from Pike Place Market (late 90's) and brought them back up to cook the next day.
  13. It may be late in the season, but are there any local places that sell live crawfish?
