  1. oh i just remembered this bakery on Kingsway (near Fraser) street that has really good pineapple buns and a unique ham and egg bun, delish but i cannot remember the name coz its really long... and this Michelle's place in Kerrisdale I am so there today to stock up for my breaks at work...so close to me but I have not heard of them *crawls out of rock*
  2. i do agree Ling. It tastes ordinary but cool to look at ...definitely go for bottled cold premium sake.
  3. Wow! Interesting. I did voice my concern at the very beginning after our 1 hour wait to both the 2 lady hostesses and one gentlemen. I apologize I did not obtain any names but our server was Kelly and she was wonderful. I merely thought perhaps e-gullet is a vice for readers to voice one's opinion and dining experiences. I did not think it had to be my 99th post before it could be some kinda of gripe. At Nu, I did speak up once (only once as I fear insistence would brand me as some insolent customer) and asked if perhaps someone could approach our table for drink orders since we've been standing and waiting for over an hour even with a reservation. In addition, we were all starving at this juncture to worry about justifying anything. As the drinks came, I got more relaxed and almost $300 later for our table of 4, I was way too relaxed at that point to voice my opinion and the night was already late. Then today while surfing egullet I thought why not write something. And just to correct a previous comment, I did not Whine and Dash. We Dashed then Whined But, if I had asked for a rectification at the restaurant and it was done, would I then not be able to post a comment on egullet as I had already brought it to the attention of a manager at the restaurant and that would make it unseemly to then 'air my grievance online'? And Leonard, thanks for writing. Your acknowledgement is sufficient enough Not that it matters, but I love what you've done with 'C'. I attended a business associate party thrown by Quinlan Abrioux recently that was totally impressive. Cheers.
  4. New Town Bakery definitely rules in my book and is mentioned in a few local blogs as a popular haunt for that delish pork bun or pastry.
  5. Last few weekends: Glowbal Nu Coast Its been years Glowbal still tops my fav restaurant list. I have been fortunate each and everytime with awesome service. We went there day 1 when they opened and have been regulars ever since. Even during the budget-friendly Dine Out Vancouver, Glowbal impressed with food quality and service. It was not rushed service ala many other places during dine out season. A definite choice for my birthday and our anniversary. Also top of our list for a place for Sunday brunch before or after spa. Recently fell in love with their duck salad and lamb satay which I can't get enough of. Afterglow (lounge part of Glowbal) totally cool place to hang out, people watch and down a few wicked potent martinis. My last birthday dinner there, the matrie'd gave us this wonderful quiet table above the steps so we were away from the fun but rowdy staggette going near the bar. That night, the lamb special impressed me to no end. I heart Glowbal. Even more so that their sister restaurant Coast really....although Coast do have this Louisiana Snapper that is simply to die for. Yum!
  6. Always a great experience for me at Hapa Izakaya. I have friends who used to work with the owner Justin Ault and before they opened, Justin had mentioned casually at a party years ago that he was planning to start a izakaya restaurant downtown in a few months. Hapa has not dissappoint since the doors were opened. Although they refrain from taking reservations between the hours of 6 - 8 pm, the wait for small tables are rarely long. Worth a try is their karaage jyan which are bite sized chicken tenders with a special sauce and onions. We also adore their Korean rice bowl which comes piping hot and topped with an egg...I believe its called bibimbap at Korean restaurants. This dish is both fun to look at and tasty. Its not a place to really get stuffed unless you over-order but more a place to dine and be merry. Definitely a great place to bring any out-of-towners to impress upon them how lucky we are to have a place such as this. With their recent expansion into the space next door, the wait has been faster as per my observation. Worthy of mention is their cold sake served in this really neat bamboo container, tres cool.
  7. After reading rave reviews my first visit with 3 other friends to NU was totally disappointing. I know grace must be shown for any new restaurant going through its growing pains. But, with that said, Nu is opened by experienced restauranteurs that had somehow failed to impress. A reservation at 8 pm resulted in a party of 4 having to wait an entire hour before a table was ready. Granted there was a larger group who may have overstayed their welcome, lesser known restaurants have been able to handle their guests with timely table turned around. After being seated, it took a gentle prompt to the manager before we were approached to have our drink orders taken, 20 minutes later. This would be 1 hour and 20 minutes after we had arrived at the restaurant. We were not in a rush to go anywhere but having to wait despite a reservation (at a place such as this) was beyond my comprehension. Maitre'd did not attempt to seat us at the bar for drinks but rather had us stand in the middle of the walkway which seemed awkward. The food was less than stellar. The goat cheese stuffed chicken wings were rather bland despite the hype by the server. No guest service recovery was attempted by the staff. The food overall was decent and prices were ok for a restaurant of this caliber. The seats were retro and a nice view to behold but not comfort conducive enough. I agree with an earlier post saying the decor reminded him of a cruise ship and not a comfortable one I might add. I would love to say I hope to return, even for a business lunch, but with the way the evening turned out, it is highly unlikely. There are a lot of kinks Nu has to work itself through and until then, I will reserve my recommendation for others.
