  1. I'd also add Caldwell Seafood Market on Bloomfield Ave-- I haven't been there in some time, but remember it to be good.
  2. i guess naming a restaurant the same as another well known restaurant is less offensive than crappy food why the heck would anyone investing their own money open a run of the mill italian restaurant in northern NJ?!?
  3. I do love Johnny Rockets as well, but in all fairness, I've only been to the Hoboken location and it's been after quite a few drinks.
  4. Welcome! Some of my faves: Epernay-- French bistro Fascino-- inventive italian Mexicali Rose-- BYO mexican Brookside Thai-- not technically in montclair (it's actually in Bloomfield), but great cheap BYO Corso 98-- italian Il forno-- the one on Bellevue for panini's Greek delights--diner like serving great greek food Indigo Smoke-- BBQ Nouveau Sushi-- nobu-like i may be missing a couple, but that should get you started!

  6. Ate at Epernay on Saturday night. Were seated promptly indoors at a cramped table. Table behind us was way too close--we didn't change table as they were just finishing dessert and we could move their table a bit. Upon being seated, nicely crusted bread and herbed butter were placed on the table. Waitress came over promptly to recite the special-- Duck confit on mesclun salad with figs and vinaigrette. My wife started off with the Bacon, Bleu cheese salad with mustard vinaigrette and a poached egg. This salad was fantastic--- you were supposed to chopped the egg up in the salad. Bacon was large chunks of meaty country bacon. I had the steak tartare-- when i ordered, the waitress asked me, "how i wanted it cooked?". I looked at her as if she had 2 heads, and she responded,"oh, sorry, but a lot of people asked for it medium or medium rare and don't understand that it's raw meat." That may be so, but if I ordered it and didnt know it was raw-- think that's a bit of an embarassing way to tell someone that. Regardless, was a generously spiced mound of chopped tenderloin, served with garlic toasted baguette slices, cornichons and a dijon mustard sauce. We also split an order of fantastic fries served with a garlic aioli. For the main course, my wife had seared tuna on a mixed salad, which was just ok, while I had the duck special. My duck was very good, although not great. It was served over mesclun salad with a vinagrette and roasted figs. Confit was a tad too dry, however flavors were good. Had 2 forgettable desserts and coffee. Service was attentive. Bill before tax and tip was $82. Overall, very good, although not the best meal I've had there.
  7. probably not in the past month- 2 months. We tried them often when we moved to the area, because they were close, but haven't tried recently. I just remember the last pie we had was an oily cheesy mess. While I do like Ralph's, I much prefer Michael's in Nultey. speaking of Bloomfield area, I had Brookside Thai last night. I should probably add this to some thai thread, but I'm lazy. I can't say enough good things about it-- ordered Larb Gai, which was amazingly hot, but good. The waitress asked how hot I wanted it, and I replied with my usual "very spicy", which in most asian restaurants is decoded as "hot for an american" or barely spicy. also had noodle dish and dumpling appetizer-- came in at $16 before tax and tip.
  8. gotta try the place in bloomfield..... i live too close not to.... for ralph's haters, try michael's behind hoffman laroche. prettty good pizza. Nizza, regarding Mamma Mia's-- I couldn't disagree more. Their pizza is awful. Cheese is very oily and they always over-cheese the pizza.
  9. madison's a much better bar scene than food. nothing notable to speak of....
  10. hmmm, I'll have to make a trip to Fiore's then.
  11. Best restaurant by far.... La Isla. Roast pork sandwich with garlic mojo on pressed bread....mmmmm. Might have to run there and get one today.
  12. I think it's always tough to judge a place on based on slices alone-- you never know how long they've been sitting there and they are usually a bit "drier"-- probably because they are doublecooked. Having said that, I've had some really great slices.
  13. yeah, i know i'm a terrible person. In the Montclair area, I like Epernay, Brookside Thai, Corso 98, Greek Delights and Formia. I havent been to Fascino yet, but am dying to try it.
