  1. Being in the Bay Area sake is a natural to be popular. I think the increasing popularity of sushi establishments outside of the Bay Area is a leading reason for its increased popularity. I just dont see it mixing with other types of non asian foods. Its a perfect fit IMO for asian based cuisine but with pizza, etc I still think a beer is the way to go. Sake alone is not bad but I think its an acquired taste. Just my 2 cents.
  2. If they found a way to put rum, simple syrup, mint, fresh lime juice, and club soda on tap they would have to surgically remove me from it.
  3. I missed the rum part. It got me however thinking into getting into other spirits. Never been much of a gin fan but with the ingredients in there its hard not to like. I saw on food network Flay having a Vodka tasting which I found cool. Hopefully they will have a rerun so I can catch the rum part.
  4. Good start. I am trying to be an afficionado but my bottles empty too quickly. I have tried the Matusalem Platino that I liked in Mojitos but am finding myself a dark rum fan moreso than light. Appleton is great. I have yet to make a Mojito myself like my first one at Elephant Bar. Maybe the sugarcane stick made the drink. Mine seems too weak and not sweet. I have taken an affinity to the basic daiquiri. Lime Juice,Dark Rum,and Sugar mixed up. A drink you may want to try that I have taken up is Coco Rum,Light Rum,juice of one lime, and a shot of pineapple juice shaken with ice. Its pretty good stuff. I have been unsuccessful for the most part with the bigtime rums seem and mentioned here. Looks like I will have to go online to shop.
  5. good read. I am still having a tricky time as far as which ones are sipping and which are good in mixed drinks. I have come to not like anything orangey with a rum drink I make. A simple basic daiquiri works really well for me but I like it better with the Appleton Estate Rum. I gotta get another bottle to try. I think I will be trying the Flor De Cana. Thanks for the wonderful tips.
  6. I came upon this URl and I have read that Luis Ayala is one of the leading rum people out there and this apparently looks like one of his endeavors. Figured I would share it. Got Rum??
  7. I just bought Ron Matusalem Platino and am loving it. It was between that and Flor de Cana. Any of the insightful posters wanna let me know if I made a boo boo or not.
  8. Thank you all for your replies. I am just getting started and was making Mojitos with dark rum. I went to the local big liquor store that has a lot of variety. I looked at white rums and they had some Bacardi,Flor De Cana, along with Matusalem which of course is not Cuban style. From what I have read Flor De Cana looks to be a top choice for white rum. Am I mistaken?
  9. I have come to this amazing resource and figured I had to utilize the vast knowledge of you posters to further educate me on rum. I only drank Bacardi for rum and have purchased some economy rum in Appleton vx. My question is,since I do not drink liquor straight as it is generally too strong,do I need to get white or light rum to make mixed drinks? Can I make Mojitos, etc with Dark Rum?Finally, if I need to get some white rum, well, what kind of mixed drinks can I make with the dark? I do want to taste the rum thus my fave drinks are Hurricanes,Mojitos(my name says it all)and I just started making the real deal Daiquiri which I like a lot. ANy help is appreciated. Thanks.
