Once upon a time I was advised when going to Europe to make sure my ATM code was four characters, so I changed it. I don't know if more than that is actually a problem but in Italy and France I've never ever had a problem. Never had a card retained or anything like that either... And like somone said earlier in the thread, they're all over.
