  1. Actually, the first place that sprang to my mind was the place in Millburn, whose name I can't recall and can't find on yp.yahoo (not JJ's, I've never been there), is the Chinese place that replaced the IHOP on Millburn Avenue. It always kept the IHOP look, but had great food, at least to my memory. Is it still there?

You're thinking of Chan's Palace. It closed a few years back. It's now a restaurant called Sampan, which has Chinese / Thai / Japanese food.

  2.   We've been to Pamir in Morristown (The only other Afghan restaurant in NJ I'm aware of)

There's also an Afghan restaurant in South Orange called Mazar Kebab House. I ate there last year and enjoyed it. There's a review on nj.com here

and here, as well as a posting on eGullet.

(This is funny as the review in the Star Ledger also said Pamir was the only other Afghan restaurant in NJ, forgetting about their own review of Mazar Kebab House!)

That I'm aware of, this restaurant (Mazar Kebab House) has closed. I drive by the restaurant fairly often, and it closed a few months ago.

Too bad... I enjoyed it. (Although I'm not surprised, as it was empty the two or three times I went there)

  4. Have you been to China 46 yet, Larry?  I just posted about their brunch...check it out!

Yes, I have tried China 46 and thought it was quite good. However, it's a bit of a drive for me. (Hence my question about the Dim Sum restaurant in Verona, which is much closer.)

  5. I was driving through Verona yesterday, and I noticed a restaurant called "Dim Sum", located at 575 Bloomfield Av. Has anyone been there? Is it any good?

My regular restaurant for Dim Sum is Noodle Chu, but I wouldn't mind finding an alternate.

  6. Yes, it is a 'classic', continental atmosphere in the stereotyped sense (not sure I'd use 'touristy' as Rachel said, but I understand where she is coming from), but to me that's part of the campy fun.

You wouldn't call the place touristy? They have signs going down Mccarter Avenue for several miles counting down how far it is to Spanish Tavern! If thats not touristy, I don't know what is. They have so many navigational cues assisting people to get there, you could land a 747 in Spanish Tavern's parking lot.

You're right - I forgot about the signs in Newark. I haven't been to that location in a while - most recently I've been to the one in Mountainside.

I'm sure I've totally lowered my Egullet reputation with my comments in this thread....

  7. Guess I'll play devil's advocate in this thread.

I enjoy going to Spanish Tavern. It is not 'gourmet', but the seafood is consistantly good and dependable. Yes, it is a 'classic', continental atmosphere in the stereotyped sense (not sure I'd use 'touristy' as Rachel said, but I understand where she is coming from), but to me that's part of the campy fun.

On the other hand, I had one of the worst seafood meals of my life at Tony De Caneca. I ordered a seafood plate (scallops, 1/2 lobster, and broiled fish, IIRC) which was tasteless. When I told the waiter, he basically shrugged at me. I was with a large party so I didn't want to make a scene, but I will not be going back anytime soon.

  8. Where else do you like to dine?

    Hi Rosie.

In addition to Noodle Chu, we go to a number of different Asian restaurants. We like Binh Duong for pho, and Taste of Asia in Chatham for south-east Asian / Indonesian. I like Penang in East Hanover, but my wife does not. :-/ We also like Khun Thai for fancy Thai, and Thai House in Scotch Plains if we want more basic Thai (e.g, it's kid friendly)

We went to Mesob, which is Ethiopian, last night. That's worth a write-up in its own thread. We also like Cuban at La Isla in Hoboken and Martinos in Somerville.

  9. Hi,

I'm a long-time reader of EGullet, but this is my first post. I am always looking for great Asian food. I'm a big fan of Noodle Chu, and used to eat regularly at Little Saigon until it burned down.

I went to Hunan Cottage last night with my family. Like others noted, I was not given the special Chinese menu, but I knew to look for it so I grabbed one from the hostess station.

The special menu had English one side, and Chinese on the other. However, they did not correspond 1-to-1. The English special menu had 39 items on it, but the Chinese one had 53. Also, the dishes noted as spicy did not match up (e.g, dish 9 was spicy on the English menu, but 8,9, and 10 were spicy on the Chinese side).

The special menu also was a great deal cost-wise. Monday through Friday (we went on a Friday), you get 3 soups and 3 dishes for $19.99. We ordered pork with yellow leeks, chicken with spicy peppers, and chicken and green beans. The pork with yellow leeks was excellent, the chicken with spicy peppers was mediocre (it was your standard schezuan chicken w/ celery, peanuts, and hot peppers), and the chicken & green beans was basic but fine (this dish was for the kids). We also had started with noodles in a spicy pepper sauce, which was very tasty (noodles mixed w/ hot chili peppers & cool cucumbers).

However, although my dinner was fine, I will likely not go back, as I was turned off by the subtle Asian/not Asian discrimination going on, as earlier posters to this thread noted. My wife & I observed that every Asian table got the specials menu, while none of Caucasian tables did.

It's bad enough that the proprietors assume that Caucasians wouldn't want the authentic Chinese food, but in this case, they are also missing the chance for the $19.99 three dish special.

I really found this offensive, and wonder if it is even legal to offer different patrons different menus w/ different prices.

    Looking forward to further comments,

    Larry
