    Masa’s

Jeff - As always, great report. We dined at Masa's about a year ago and would rate it about the same, although I don't think the meal we had would stand up to yours. Instead of going back to Fifth Floor again, I would like to suggest you try Charles Nob Hill. We just went to celebrate our 3rd anniversary last week. $100 per person for the tasting menu and $70 for the wine pairing. While the room and the service could use a bit of sprucing up, Chef Melissa Perello did such a wonderful job we would go back for the food. And, we enjoyed the wine paring as well. Haven't had time to post about the meal yet. Will do so soon, but I know I won't do it the same justice you could.
  2. One more vote for passing on Tra Vigne years ago it was my favorite, can't begin to tell you how diappointed we were last time we ate there a few months back. Phil mentioned Wappo. I will have to second that one and suggest you have lunch on their patio. The atmosphere is wonderful, as is the food. We have sampled pretty much everything on the menu and never been disappointed. I even love their water - typical spa water infused with cucumber, mint, and citrus fruits. Haven't been to Martini House yet, but friends have and raved. I've also heard good things about The Farmhouse but have not gotten there myself yet.

    Trip Report

We didn't eat that much at the fairgrounds - we were only there Sat. and Sun. After Acme, we were pretty full and then didn't want to eat too much before the dinner reservations. Sat. we had Crawfish bread because my husband loved that last year and I had broiled crawfish which are actually my favorite. Then we shared a combo plate that had some sort of puffed pastry with crawfish, a crawfish wan ton and one other thing - that was pretty tasty yoo. Sun. we were in the tent waiting to hear Etta James (she was great) and the rain was going pretty good so we just ducked out and got some ribs and coleslaw at the tent right there - they were good, but nothing out of the ordinary.
  4. My husband and I made the trip from SF for Jazz Fest and had some fantastic meals! And my boy Lenny was pretty fantastic at the festival too (while he was the highlight for me, all the other artists we saw were excellent). Thurs: Arrived at 10:30 pm and got to Acme just past 11 pm, so they were closed and we headed across the street for a dozen oysters and an oyster po boy. It was all good, but later decided the oyster po boy at Acme is much better - Oysters there are not as heavily fried. Fri AM: Straight to Uglesich's (still not sure how to pronounce it) to get in line. And the line was worth the wait!!! Started with an excellent Bloody Mary made by Mrs. U - she has it down. Next we had fried green tomatoes with shrimp and remulade, fried oysters with blue cheese, purgatory shrimp (fried shrimp with gorgonzola cheese sauce). All 3 apps were excellent my favorite was purgatory - nothing was over fried or too heavy. Entrees were softshell crab with a side of a baked eggplant dish which was out of this world. And last but not least the BBQ shrimp and oyster combo. This was by far my favorite. Next time I would go for just the oysters which were sooo incredible – plump and juicy, cooked just right in a delicious garlic sauce. In my opinion, the peel and eat shrimp on the plate were not as tasty and took a lot more work. Mr. U complemented us on our ordering and when we went in to say thank you at the end of our meal, Mrs. U said "Yes Julie, how can I help you." what a memory she has! Fri PM: Bayona - Sat on the patio and it was a wonderful setting – the feeling was comfortable, with a simple elegance and the service was superb as was the food. The menu has 2 pages – one for signature dishes and one for specials. I was much more impressed with the signature dishes. The sautéed sweetbreads in a sherry mustard sauce were little bites of heaven – my favorite item of everything we had. Cream of garlic soup was very good, but I could easily skip that next time and the Crispy Smoked Quail salad with Bourbon Molasses Vinaigrette was delicious. From the Special side, the Sea Scallops were very good, but nothing out of the ordinary and I didn’t care for the flavoring of the duck leg confit starter which was what I had as my entree. Fortunately, my hubby shared the Peppered Lamb Loin with Herbed Goat Cheese & Zinfandel Sauce (also a signature dish) and it was outstanding. It takes a lot to impress me with lamb and the quality of the lamb and the flavor combination were superb. For dessert it was a fresh fruit wan ton with home made ice cream that was delicious. Sat AM: Our usual a dozen oysters and Oyster Po Boy at Acme and then a few nibbles later on at Jazz Fest. My favorite jazz fest treat the plain old crawfish. My companions all favor the crawfish bread. Sat PM: Brigtsen’s – Definitely a cozy atmosphere. Again, casual and comfortable but fine dining. I really like this type of atmosphere. It is so much nicer than fine dining in an uptight/snobby atmosphere. The servers all share responsibility for the table and they are all equally knowledgeable and helpful. We started off with three appetizers. First was the Shrimp Remoulade with Guacamole and Deviled egg and it was delicious. From beginning to end I was wowed by Frank’s sauces and flavor combinations – he is a master. Next was the softshell crab with roasted pecans and meuniere sauce. This was the largest softshell crab I have ever seen and we finished every last bite of it. Again the flavor combinations were outstanding. But my favorite of the meal was our 3rd appetizer – pan roasted quail and grilled foie gras in apple cider pan gravy. I could have licked the plate clean. I am a foie gras fan and this is some of the best I have every had and the quail was done perfectly as well. And the apple cider pan gravy…. I am still dreaming about this dish! So on to the entrees. While they were very, very good, I have to say I enjoyed the appetizers more. Maybe it was just that we had already had so much to eat. After all the talk on the board about the Seafood Platter, I had to order that and hubby had the stuffed veal. Both were very good, but not as good as the appetizers – in my opinion. My favorites on the platter were the crawfish thermidor which and the crawfish in pistacio lime sauce that sat on tip of the grilled drum. Of course these were the two dishes covered in Frank’s flavorful sauces so I am not surprised those where what I gravitated to on the plate. For me the two types of baked oysters were not out of this world and the crabmeat ravigote had flavors in it that were not to my taste. We finished off with the pecan pie and the trio of sorbets atop pureed honeydew melon and I was introduced to a new after dinner drink called Nocello which has a sweet, but not overly sweet walnut flavor. I will have to try that again. We had one of our favorite chef’s from back home sitting at the table behind us, so we got to say hello. Apparently he and Frank are friends from way back. And one of our servers brought Frank out to meet us. We thanked him up and down for the fabulous meal. We will be back next year! Sun: The usual at Acme for brunch and then Cobalt for dinner. Not many choices on Sunday night and I read a few good reviews on the board. I would stick to drinks and desert and forget everything in between! Started with a dreamsicle martini which went down way too easy, and finished with a milk chocolate-peanut butter mouse with chocolate covered banana that was terrific. There were four of us dining and I didn’t taste anything on the menu that was worth writing about. Maybe I was just spoiled at Bayona and Brigtsen’s. Just writing all this out, I am ready to start planning our dining for our trip to Jazz Fest next year… while I would like to try some new places, I think I will have to go back to Uglesich’s, Bayona and Brigtsen’s!
  5. Ludja asked for a follow up on what I decided to make for the Appletini party. Which was a huge success thanks to all of you. My head is pounding right now - drank a bit too much of my own Appletini potion. It didn't help that the party started at 6 pm and the last guests left at 1 am. All left raving about the appetizers. Stephen's Apple Salad - Couldn't find Cabrales cheese, bought something I thought was close, bit it tasted awful, so I through in some blue cheese and served the salad on endives - guests loved it Merstar's Stuffed Mushrooms - What a hit - I used crimini mushrooms I find they have more flavor. Tana's Gorgonzola Walnut Pate - Yum! I toasted the walnuts first. Piped out the pate onto apple slices and topped off with a spiced walnut (made spiced walnuts, almonds and pecans just to throw in bowls as a little extra) Chicken Liver Pate - Many of you suggested this. I cheated here and bought pre-made, served on apple slices with chive garnish Baked Brie - Topped with brown sugar and almond slices sauteed in butter and served with apple slices Blue Cheese Shortbread Leaves with Cream Cheese Chutney Roulade - Found this on Epicurious - I made it two ways - with a sweet apple raisin chutney and a spicey apple cranberry chutney - Thought I would like the spicey better but turned out the sweet was the better combination - really complemented the blue cheese shortbread. Pastry Wrapped Chicken Apple Sausage - Found this on epicurious too. Called for honey mustard and cheddar cheese, but I used gruyer (sp?) - ok, so its still pigs in a blanket, but it was very good Chicken Apple Sausage baked with Grapes - Another hit. Turned this into a finger food by chopping up the sausage and serving on a platter with toothpicks. Grape sauce is reduced and then add balsamic vinegar. I love anything with balsamic! And last but not least, apple pizza - A sweet pizza. No cheese, I served this last as a sort of dessert. I guess we had a few appletini's by then because my husband swears there was cheese on this, but there wasn't. Thanks again for all your great ideas. I've been eating at great restaurants for years, but just started cooking myself about a year or two ago. All these apps, with the exception of the baked brie were new to me - so this could have been a disaster - but they all turned out and I had very satisfied guests.
  6. Can anyone tell me about their experience dining at Charles Nob Hill? I have searched the board but haven't found any comments. Would love some feedback before I book a reservation for a special occasion. Thanks!
  7. Thank you all for your wonderful ideas! I plan to use a lot of them. A few sound like they might be a bit more than I am ready to tackle for this event - I have about 30 people coming. But for the recipes I don't try for this party, I will try them out at smaller gatherings. And yes - I have discovered Epicurious. I use it all the time. Didn't have much luck when I searched there a few weeks ago, but went back after I posted here last night and had much better luck. I am wondering if they improved their search since I last tried this search a few weeks ago?
  8. I am hosting an appletini cocktail party and have decided on an all apple theme. I would love to hear any good appetizer recipes (preference is for finger foods) you would be willing to share - thanks!
  9. My husband and I are thinking of going to Charles Nob Hill for our anniversary. We like to visit restaurants with tasting menus and wine pairing for special occasions. Would love to hear your thoughts on experiences at Charles Nob Hill. Thanks!
