  2. Any suggestions in York as I will be heading there in the morning for a long weekend and you guys always know best? Cheers! Renee
  3. Just a short update on our trip to Alicante this past weekend. The first night there we found our way to Nou Manolin....great tip, very much enjoyed our meal and the wine. The second night for my Big 40 we were given the name of a wonderful place called Monastrell...... fantastic.....a very Zen place. We opted for the menu degustacion.......superb! Each taste was of the highest quality of ingredients.....the food, wine, service, the ambience.....flawless! It may be a well kept secret as it was mostly locals, this we enjoyed. I highly recommend Monastrell....see more on the web http://www.Monastrell.com if interested. The third night was not worth a mention! Each day...we lunched at little places by the beach up and down the coast while enjoying all the fresh grilled fish..... Fantastic trip, it was our first time to Alicante and the area...would do it again for sure....enjoyed the city....the beaches but most all enjoyed the bright sunny warm skies with a nice cool gentle breeze.....hard to beat! Cheers! Renee

    Meatloaf

I love to smear ketchup with horseradish on top....YUM! I've been thinking of meatloaf all week. I've been thinking of making it a way I learned in cooking class in Italy last year but yet to do it. They make their meat loaf with eggs and breadcrumbs and seasoning....wrap it in Italian meat and cook it on top, turning each side and letting it brown crispy....leave it on low. If this sounds like anything you want to try...I still have the recipe, if intrested... Gotta say it sliced up nice and was yummy .....but I do like my ketchup mixture that I use. Cheers!
  5. We bring it into Houston....as long as it's sealed, it's never been a problem for us.
  6. My sweetie surprised me this morning with a long weekend in Alicante Spain for my 40th, we leave in the morning. Any recommendations as to where and what we should eat, see, buy or do... It's a short time, so I would love to here from people with great ideas or experiences they had there. Thank You in advance! Cheers! Renee
  7. I agree with Mayhaw man about Mike Anderson's if you should be in Baton Rouge! That's always a stop for me when I'm there!
  8. Crawfish Town USA...gets my vote for the boiled stuff, it's in Breaux Bridge, not far from Lafayette. There is a big joke with me and my friends that go there, the place gets larger and larger and the owners wife's diamond does too, so they must do something right. Very friendly staff and the food is always piping hot. You can get mild, spicy or hot as hell, what ever you prefer. You pass up the tourist spots when you turn off I-10 on the way there....Don't let the name put you off...it's been there for years and it's great food and friendly service. Black's is fantastic but would not drive there just for crawfish..as there are many places for that. You can hardly go wrong in that part of the country! Enjoy your trip and the food....eat some for me by the way...I sure miss it. When away from home...anything that says Cajun I stay away from as that's only at home in Louisiana.
  9. Too many to count! If you throw in the Southern Living magazine with all the printouts, it's crazy. My husband says if I only cooked as much as books I own, life would be great. We have moved 5 times in 7 years of our marriage and I drag these from country to country. I think if I buy one more..he is going to lose it! With the great net now days, you can find anything...that's another thing, printing out all that mess...I have it all, prints, cookbooks and magazines. We leave are leaving our Paris apartment headed to our new home in Scotland Sat. 14th and I'm thinking maybe I should get read of my magazines but as they remind me of home...Louisiana...I can't bear the thought of tossing them out, however I might do it anyways just to free me of this craziness I have of recipes. No more cook books for me! r.
  10. Note the bottom parade Spanishtown parade...I've been many times, it's great fun but as any Mardi Gras..people in South La. have a lot of fun and it's one big party, so be prepared. Sorry I can't help you with dinning downtown, although it's really not a large city and easy to get around by cab or car...I recommend for a really nice dinner, Jubans, they offer duck, fish, beef, lamb, veal, venison. Go to www.jubans.com to see the menu. They also offer a decent wine list. As for as nice seafood and where most of the locals go, Mike Anderson's. You can also find web www.mikeandersons.com to see menu. Although I tend to go back to my favorite ones...there are many more new great suggestions with many new places, I'm sure. Onething is for sure the ones that I've mentioned have been around for a long time and still going strong. Mike Anderson's Seafood Restaurant opened in 1975 as Collegetown Seafood near the gates of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The invention of Mike Anderson, a former All-American football player at L.S.U. who had never worked in a restaurant before, Collegetown Seafood started out as a po-boy shop and seafood market. Slowly, the business grew and seafood gumbo and fried seafood were added to the menu. The original location was packed with customers and, in 1982, the business moved to 1031 West Lee Drive in Baton Rouge, opening as Mike Anderson's Seafood Restaurant A really fun venue is The Chimes, it's located next to the univ...they have really nice gumbo's, chicken wings, boiled shrimp and much more...great food, great beer, nothing fancy. This places has many professors, college students and a mix of locals not all young, young at heart 40ish. Next door to the chimes great bands at the Varsity can be heard, it's always a fun time. Depending on who would be playing of course the crowds are not all students, many locals go as well, age varies to who is playing and sometimes not. Enjoy Mardi Gras and if should have any cakes....watch out for the baby, or you will buy the next one! Cheers! Renee These are the schedules for Baton Rouge Mardi Gras 2004. 11. Off topic... but in the States we would not eat eggs not refrigerated...here in France that's the only way they come. We eat them without any problem! Most of the time...we find eggs haven't much flavor, thank goodness for hot sauce! Oh yeah! The unrefrigerated milk in the box, it's not bad!
  12. Quails' Gate Estate Winery gets my vote. If you'are ever in the area go there for an informative tour and tasting, while there enjoy a wonderful meal over looking a beauitful setting. It's a great way to spend the afternoon. A winery known for its great tradition, history and quality wines Quails' Gate is one of Canada's most noted wineries. The first significant vineyards on the Westbank slopes were planted by Richard Stewart. The property at that time was known as Allison Ranch. Quails' Gate has delevoped a line of wines now bearing the Allison Ranch name. Ben Stewart is Owner and CEO, Ashley Hooper is the winemaker As we drove into the winery we were impressed by its beautiful location, landscaping and building design. It was a wonderful place to be. I strolled the entire length of the vineyard; watching the quails scurry away as I approached. There really are quails at Quails' Gate.
  13. When, it's what you have been eating all your life as that's the way with food in South La., every thing else is bland. In Canada and France the two places that I've lived in the past 4 years...I feel the need to crack pepper all over my food. As the French make their food to perfection and one needs never to use salt or pepper, it's to perfection to them, not one who is used to hot spicy food. On the other hand, the less I eat it the more back home becomes a problem for me regarding the spice. Cheers! Renee
  14. Natchitoches (NAK-a-tish), KIER, is half way between Shreveport and Alexandria. It's the oldest town in the Louisiana Purchase, very historic, and has a beautiful downtown area. Great restaurant downdown (only two miles) is The Landing. Louisiana style food of all types. Reasonable lunch prices. If Two other decent places to eat in Natchitoches are Mama's and Papa's (two separate resturaunts) one is an oysterbar/seafood place and the other is more of a sandwich (PoBoy) place they are right next to each other on Front St. in Down Town just a block from The Landing. Good food, quick service, and not too pricey. This is food that is mostly known as South Louisiana cooking. Best meals around north louisiana and what north louisiana is really known for as for as food goes..turnip greens, collard greens, mustard greens, crowder peas, purple hull peas, black eyed peas, butter beans, fried pork chops, fried catfish, corn on the cob, potatoes in white sauce. Lots of gardens grown up there and this is the meals..they most enjoy. I know..I'm one of them. The next time you are looking for a great food place in North Louisiana...stop any place serving down home cooking and this is what you'll find. One of the post mentioned meat pies..here's the place that makes them. Lasyone's Famous Meat Pies, a Natchitoches tradition, is a friendly, casual establishment, located at 622 Second Street. For over a quarter of a century, we have been the stopping place for many domestic, as well as, international travelers touring the "Heart of Downtown Natchitoches" - Louisiana's oldest city - founded in 1714. We offer a large menu, specializing in the Meat Pie Lunch" and for dessert, our very own "Cane River Cream Pie." Some other tasty, southern specialties are our "Red Beans, Rice and Sausage" served with hot cornbread, as well as our "Fillet Catfish Platter". Magazine, newspaper and television media have made our meat pies known nationwide. We've been featured in such publications as The New Yorker, Gourmet Magazine, Southern Living and Good Roadfood as well as many others. So take the drive into Natchitoches and come "Eat Hearty" at Lasyone's. Our Meat Pies: Single Meat Pie Mini Meat Pies What's in a meat pie? Here are the delicious ingredients: 80% Ground Beef 20% Ground Pork Our own special Lasyone's seasoning mixture All ingredients are lovingly stuffed into a hand made pastry ready to fry Oh yes....this city offers the most spectacular fire works display the first Sat. in Dec. each year. If you are trying to figure out the places to visit in North La., this should be one of them, it's a historical and beautiful small town on a river. Check out the book store on front street..it's full of La. history. Renee
  15. I would stay with my sister who is 5 years older than I for a week during the summers from school. I remember her making this dish often, as she was on a very tight budget and this always did the trick. I've never eaten it again really and I'm not sure my sister and her family does..she is a fantastic cook and always has been. I often think about the times, she let her little bratty sister stay with her and we ate her rice/sugar and sometimes or maybe always butter dish! I'm thinking my Midwestern husband would think it was not so hot...however, I could feed him potatoes like this and he would love it ha! I'm a Louisiana gal and I adore rice any way. Renee Oh Yeah! The other dish was hot dogs cut sliced open with BBQ sauce placed under broiler, sometimes with cheese....I also don't eat this anymore!
