  1. Yeah, It was Jonathan Waxman and Waters ex, Stephen Singer who bought it. So far, word is that it will be a organic based pizza and pasta joint, priced all under $20. The tentative name being, West County Cafe.
  2. I was wondering if anyone knows if there is genuine truth to the super hush-hush rumor that Alice Waters has purchased Lucy's Restaurant in Sebastopol? My source would know due to her position at city hall. But I am always weary of these rumors. All that I know for a fact is that Lucy's closed today "to transfer new ownership"
  3. I just re-read OD for the second time since this topic started. Pollen approached his whole point of view of Whole Foods from a consumers perspective, nothing as a journalist. So how is his assessment of WF wrong because he didn't formally interview executives? I can walk into WF in Sebastopol, CA and come to the same concusions he did. I get 100% of my produce from local farmers, and Sebastopol is a huge farming communty, and the farmers point of view is very similar. A picture/profile of one local farmer is showcased in the produce section, yet they haven't bought a thing from him in over a year.
  4. I would like to add my praise to Generals Daughter as well. I ate there about 2 weeks ago, and had the most amazing meal. Chef Preston definitely outdid himself. The highlights of my meal included the Tuna Tartar, Venison, The Scallop dish, The Braised Pork, and the Meyer Lemon Cake. Preston is an awesome chef, and a cool ass dude. He gave me a tour of the kitchen and we BS'd for a bit about local produce, meyer lemons, and Mario's Salumi. I hope to make it back very soon.
  5. I rarely eat in the city, but my "Bay Area" Top 5 for now.... 1) Zazu (Santa Rosa) 2) Cyrus (Healdsburg) 3) Picco (Larkspur) 4) Manresa (South Bay) 5) Chez Panisse Cafe (sounds like a cliche choice, but my last 5 or 6 meals there have been near perfect)
  6. Wilshire Restaurant is doing some good things.... Drago is still one of my favorite places as well. Are you going to Jar on Monday, when Nancy Silverton is doing the mozzarella bar thing?
  7. Cyrus is good, but bring a hefty pocketbook. I spent over $600 for me and 2 guests. For something slightly more affordable and a little more casual, I would say Zazu, or even alot more casual, John Stewarts other place, Bovalo is awesome. I ate lunch there today. Housemade charcuterie and the Bovalo Burger (heirloom pork) put it over the top for me. If you want to drive 20 minutes southwest and come to La Terre, I will be in doing prep all day, so I wouldn't mind doing a private lunch/dinner for you guys. Just drop me a line. Thanks for dinner the other night, It was absolutely amazing. Nice chatting as well. I think GD is my new favorite place.
  8. R23 Downtown in the Art District. It is hidden away in a warehouse area. It is mostly sushi, but has alot of other good japanese food as well
  9. I'm not sure, but I will look into it. I am farely new to the area and have only been open 3 weeks so I am still trying to get to know the local farms. Thanks
  10. I haven't ate there, but I have worked with Chistopher in the past and find his attention to detail, obsession with quality, and immaculate taste to be amazing. If he is in the kitchen, which he is every evening, you are going to have a great meal.
  11. Yeah, I actually ate at Bolovo on Sunday. I knew he cured his own meats there, but I didn't know that he was raising the pigs as well. I will definitely check it out. Thanks, I will Look into the 4H thing as well.
  12. I am in Sebastopol (Sonoma County) Looking for a local hog farm or something of that nature to get some whole pigs in to do some charcuterie work. I am only interested in somewhat local, and responsibly cared for pigs. Can anyone help me with this? I am not having much luck.
  13. And Patisserie Angelica has the best hot chocolate ever.
  14. That's got to be about the least useful thing I've ever read on eG, no personal attack intended. People may be willing to help a young ambitious person, but are pretty unlikely to help an ambitious person without a college degree. Try even getting in the door of any reputable newspaper or magazine without a college degree. I assure you that in today's job market it's not going to happen. ← I knew many people would disagree. But the least usefull thing you ever read? I don't quite know about that. It all really depends on the type of person you are. But personally, I have never once gotten a job based on my schooling. It may be different because I am a chef, not a writer. But in any job skill will always outway schooling. If leaving school is not your "style" then for sure, take the other advice about getting into journalism classes and all that. I was just letting you know that thier are other ways. I never said I was a hotshot writer and to follow me for I am all knowing. A question was asked, and I simply offered my opinion.
  15. Here's my 2 sense. Although people will give me a bunch of flack for saying this.... Simply put. QUIT SCHOOL! There is no substitution for experience. Real Life University is the key. Read, Write, Travel, Cook. I think learning to cook is a great idea for food writers. It will make it easier to understand what is really going on with the food. Why it may taste a certain way. So you can "get it". If you need to learn the technical stuff, find a good Jr. College, or take some classes at UCLA Extention. But you aren't going to get where you want to go by waisting valuable time over the then 4 or so years. Trust me. I did the whole 4 year UCLA thing, and then the Culinary School thing. And I learned more about cooking when I started to travel and work for a living. Find a great author who might be willing to take some time out of thier busy schedule to look at your stuff, comment on it, help you, and mentor you. Who knows, maybe someone like Ruhlman would be happy to be your mentor. Just ask. People are more willing than you think to help a young ambitious person.
