  1. Mark, I did just move to the Westerpark. Love to hear any restaurant recommendations. I am very happy in my new (small) place.

If anyone is having a Thanksgiving feast and they need another solo American who does not want to spend Thanksgiving alone, let me know!!!! (-: My new kitchen is so tiny I can't promise to cook anything but I could bring loads of wine or anything else.

I am clean, presentable and a good conversationalist.

  2. Wow is so quiet in here.

    Recently had dinner at

    Casa Peru

Very nice place. The pork shank is to die for, the ceviche was good (not great).

Sorry I am not one to write long reports but I do like to note some of the good (and bad) places.

I will be moving to the Westerpark soon. Any thoughts on that neighborhood?

  3. Thanks Brian for the updates. I had my first dinner at Blauw aan de Wal a couple of weeks ago (after having my eye on it for years),  I thought it was pretty good - the food was simple, not too fussy, high quality ingredients - we also had some good wines by the glass. I also thought that the service was truly excellent, of a standard you don't often find in NL!

I like the Koffie Salon too.

I can vouch for the Koffie Salon. I am lucky to live next door.

  4. It is funny how much I crave a hamburger here. I mean really crave them.

I found the best burger in town.

    Cafe Bos

    Amstelveenseweg 226

    Right off tram 12.

Very good, meat and a good understanding of what a good burger is (and perhaps as important) what it is NOT.

    Also, they serve fries.

I have decided I will no longer patronize Burgermeister. Any place that tells me I should not have fries with my burger is not going to get my business (-:

  5. Found a great bowl of chili in the Jordaan! Not as spicy as I would like, but was the perfect antidote to the sleet today. A small two story bar with decent sized menu including sate, Dutch sausage stew, mushroom steak, tuna salad sub (toasted) as well as the chili.

    Leffe on tap

  6. Like to give a quick shout-out to Lalibela for Ethiopian food. My wife and I lived for 8 years in Washington, DC, with the largest Ethiopian community outside of Africa. Lalibela would easily how its on in DC's 9th Street corridor.

I had stewed mutton, my wife a vegetarian mix. Both excellent. 9 euros each (cheap!). Right off the Overtoom.

  7. Unfortunately my first post will be a negative one. I must beg of you to avoid Cafe George on the Leidsegracht. My wife and I had one of the worst meals we have ever had in Europe there.

Its a lovely looking cafe with tile floor and walls, giving it the look of an NYC subway station.

The first problem: when we sat down (1 PM) we saw the chef come out from the kitchen, sit down with a friend and never returned to the kitchen. As the orders backed up, she never seemed interested in helping her sou-chef.

Service: sllllloooooow. The waitresses seemed to be more interested in posing rather than working.

Food: My wife (sadly) is a vegetarian. So she ordered the tuna sandwhich. What came out had bacon between every slice of bread. I like to tease vegetarians as much as the next meat eater, but to but bacon on a tuna sandwhich (without identifying it) is just rude to vegetarians, muslims and jews.

With the place trying to look like a French bistro, I expected the steak frites (16 euros) to be decent. I was served the most disgusting peice of shoe leather I have ever seen. This meat would make a 'minute steak' look like a rib-eye. It was centemeters thick, with a hole in the middle. It looked like some sort of animal had chewed through it. I ordered it rare but there was no way to serve this meat rare without throwing it uncooked on my plate.

The only edible part of the meal: the curly fries which reminded me of Hardee's in the US.

    You have been warned.

  8. Let me improve a little on the directions to The Corner. Rt 29 does not hit campus since UVa does not have a campus. You need to turn left on Main Street off of 29. There is the Best Western Cavailier Inn on your right.

On the Corner the Virginian is a must for nostalgia/history. The still make a decent burger, but alas its not the in place it once was. It has probably gone in and out of style about 30 times in the past 100 years, so perhaps its back in.

Bodo's does make a mean Ceasar salad but make sure your entire party eats one as the garlic is INTENSE.

  9. yeah, i know, my "miff" isn't really warranted... i have no way of confirming that clothing/apparent stature dictates treatment (at least i hope not!!)... i guess i was just terribly disappointed about the situation...  still, 6.30?  oh well, i'll just have to go back again!!  :raz:

Than why not delete negative speculation that you have absoutely no proof for. DC's best resaturant deservers better than that.
