  1. I suspect that many good Chinatown restaurants would welcome families with well-behaved young children. And I suspect that most 2-year-olds would not love spicy Szechuan foods.

     

    So that leaves, among many others, Nam Wah Tea Parlor, Dim Sum Garden, Tom's Dim Sum, Sakura Mandarin, Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodle House, Shiao Lan Kung, Ting Wong . . .

  2. We'd be grateful for suggestions of good brunch or lunch places around Millburn or Short Hills for Saturday after Thanksgiving, 11/24/12. We're not interested in malls or other crowded spots on Black Friday weekend.

    Our out-of-town guests are probably not adventuresome, but they likely respect locally grown and well-cooked food . . . some place like Bekta in Ottowa or Pumpkin in Philadelphia or Castagna in Portland.

  3. Many thanks for all the good ideas . . . in this topic and others. We had a wonderful trip during the French Quarter Festival . . . visiting the Quarter, taking the ferry to Algiers Point, walking the Botanical Gardens, swinging at the clubs on Frenchmen Street and much more. Eating, as it often is for us, was the highlight . . . and here are those highlights. We owe a big shout out to Corbin Evans, now Executive Chef at the Inn at Ole Miss, formerly Chef at Lulu's in NOLA, for his suggestions.

  4. Unless we move to New Orleans, we'll never be able to visit all the restaurants that look great. We're going to be in New Orleans for five days, two during the French Quarter Festival. Thanks to your comments, we've tentatively planned our meals. Some of these places are higher end than we'd normally choose, so comparable food for less money would be helpful.

  5. I'd be grateful for suggestions for lunch in a place that serves delicious food (our guest is a former restaurant reviewer) in a room quiet enough for conversation. No stairs (or at most one small step); no stool seats. Any cuisine -- although French-influenced is preferred, as are local, organic and sustainable sources. A restaurant opened in the last year would be good.

    I had Fare in mind until LaBan's review. a.kitchen is probably too noisy after noon. I've not been to J.G. Domestic, Tashan or 943. What am I missing?

  6. Four of us had a delicious dinner at Sbraga early last week. The foie gras soup, the sweetbreads, eggplant terrine got things off to a fine start. The artic char and meatloaf were favorites. The four of us split two wine pairings.

    But the meal was late and very slow. We had 8:30 reservations, were seated at 9:00 and courses appeared very slowly. The staff and chef were very apologetic, serving additional wine and, despite our protests, comping the whole meal.

    After the kinks are worked out, we will enthusiastically go back.

  7. Does anyone know for sure whether there's a new chef at Sakura Mandarin and whether they still serve soup dumplings?

    We're going with a friend from Germany who loved the restaurant when he was in town many months ago, but we've not been back since. He'll be disappointed if we can't get good soup dumplings at Sakura. (We could go back to Dim Sum Garden or try Red Kings, I guess.)

    1) Set up crew. When: 3:30 - 5:45 pm Set up tables and chairs for booths and guests.

    4) Hosts. Shifts 6:00 - 7:30 or 7:30 - 9 pm. Monitor shambles and area outside. Clean up spilled food. Dispose of filled trash bags; replace with new.

    5) Clean up: When: 9:00 - 10:00 pm. Task: Take down tables, dispose of customer trash, clean up area.

    Slow Food Philadelphia is a chapter of an international grassroots movement, represented in more than 130 countries, working to reconnect us with the people, traditions, plants, animals, fertile soils and waters that produce our food. We want to inspire a transformation in food policy, production practices and market forces so that they ensure equity, sustainability and pleasure in the food we eat.

    Farm to City is a Philadelphia- based program whose goal is to unite communities, families, and farmers year-round through good locally grown food. Farm to City envisions a city connected to its region through its farmers and their crops, a city rich with healthful and flavorful food choices - at outdoor markets, grocery stores, restaurants and schools.

    The Shambles, the long colonial market shed running between Pine and Lombard Street in the middle of 2nd Street, was the first public market place in Philadelphia dating from 1745. The brick colonnaded structure was built by the mayor of Philadelphia with his own money so he collected market rent from the farmers. Farmers arrived on Monday and Thursday nights for the Tuesday and Friday market days. The headhouse at the Pine Street end was built in 1805 to house volunteer fire companies as well as the bell to signal fires and the beginning of market day. 265 years later our event celebrates this old market place with some of the best food and drink Philadelphia has to offer.

  11. My wife and I tried Noble Wednesday night. . . .

    I had the grass-fed rib eye and I thought this was very interesting for several reasons. First, I am not knowledgeable enough to make definitive statements, but this is the first time I have eaten in a restaurant in the USA that advertized its beef as "grass-fed." Second, I really, really enjoy grass-fed beef. I did not find the meat so flavorful (though it was extremely tender) compared to the beef I ate in Spain (which is exclusively grass-fed), but I had the same "un-sick" feeling after I ate this as I did in Spain when I ate beef there. I cannot be more precise except to say that as wonderful as American marbled beef is, after I eat it, I have this nauseus "I can't believe I ate the whole thing" feeling that I do not get with grass-fed beef, and this is not strictly an issue of portions.

    I think there are many local restaurants, like Rx and White Dog Cafe, serving grass-fed beef. You could probably find them in the Philadelphia Buy Fresh/Buy Local Philadelphia Local Food Guide.

A German delicatessen, not a salumeria, Rieker's has, for starters, 4 different kinds of bratwurst as well as a wide variety of luncheon meats (like Berliner presskopf, red head cheese and souse), smoked treats (think cervelat, smoked kielbasa, landjagger), spreadable meats (including 4 kinds of liverwurst), and many roasts ready to eat or cook. Try, for example, the rouladen, "thin slice of beef is filled with seasoned ground beef, onion and bacon, and rolled. You brown it for ten minutes, add gravy, and then simmer it, covered, for thirty minutes before eating.") They also sell a variety of other goodies of which my favorite is a super sauerkraut. Much of what they offer is homemade.
