  1. Hey FWED, any update on this thread? Not that I need another dessert cookbook, but.... chococrazy
  2. Malcolm, you rock, I heard it on the news this morning! Yes, I think sushi is in order for dinner tonight ... even though I -did- have it on lunch on Tuesday. chococrazy
  3. FYI, I think Mr. Bourdain is a member of our beloved eGullet (from the previous posts, it seems like it might be him). Someone (e.g. one person) could politely ask him, unless he has happened across this thread. I will try to make it on the 4th! chococrazy
  4. My vote is for 'kakes'! Simple, sweet, memorable.
  5. Oh, I spoke too soon. From the site: IRON CHEF AMERICA What happens when the original Iron Chefs travel from Japan to North America to battle their American counterparts? Watch Iron Chef America to find out! Based on the wildly popular Japanese culinary cult classic Iron Chef, the five-part Iron Chef America features Bobby Flay, Mario Batali, and Wolfgang Puck pitted against each other, and against original Iron Chefs Masaharu Morimoto and Hiroyuki Sakai, in a series of culinary battles. In this American-style adaptation, the Chairman (played by martial arts expert Mark Decascos) instigates a surprise Iron Chef tradition as chef Alton Brown (Good Eats) and Kevin Brauch (The Thirsty Traveler) report on the action. Judges include: Paige Davis, host of Trading Spaces; Queer Eye for the Straight Guy's Ted Allen; Dayna Devon host of television newsmagazine Extra; actor James Michael Tyler ("Gunther" on Friends), Seinfeld's John O'Hurley, Melinda Clarke of The OC; actor/host Brian Unger of The Daily Show and I Love the 80's Strikes Back; Vincent Pastore of The Sopranos; Jeffery Steingarten, contributing writer for Vogue; Victoria Von Biel of Bon Appetit and Kerry Simon, chef/owner of Simon Kitchen & Bar in the Hard Rock Café, Las Vegas. When it's on: Sunday November 7, 8:00 PM ET (CC) Upcoming Episodes: • Iron Chef America: Preview Special, Sunday, November 7, 8:00 PM EST (CC)
  6. This is from my friend who works as a health inspector for the city: "It was a decision made at the Provincial level to protect the public from parasitic infections (by freezing fish, parasites - (worms) are destroyed). Due to the media attention, the province may actually change the regs. We are currently not enforcing this section until the new year, which at this time, they may amend this sections again. FYI- most "raw" fish in the sushi industry has been previously frozen at some point (on the fishing boats) or in the store level. The media forgot to disclose this to the public. Dont be foolled, its not always "FRESH"" Oh... I do love my sushi. chococrazy
  7. Mmmm.... Tibetan butter tea. I can drink it by the gallons (then again, I am Tibetan!) Many of the Tibetan restaurants in the west are influenced by Nepalese/Indian cuisine... since many Tibetan exiles grew up in those areas. Hence you will see curries on the menu. As a side note, Timo is another good name for a dog too... pronounced Tee-mo, it's a steamed bun without meat. Hungrily, chococrazy
  8. Too bad, the Food Network in Canada doesn't carry Iron Chef America, only the original show! Maybe my best friend in NYC will tape it for me and send it... All the best Michael!
  9. Having never bought unsweetened chocolate, I was eager to purchase some Callebaut since my father was recently diagnosed as pre-diabetic. A little taste ended up in a napkin... definitely not eating chocolate. A question... I was planning on sweetening it with an articifical sweetener. Is Splenda the best to use? How is Splenda for baking, and for making unbaked items like chocolate truffles and sauces? chococrazy
  10. Yes, in Canada they are called Pogos. Funny thing... I had a party a couple of weekends ago, and a girlfriend of mine brought a box of Pogos. I thought it was the weirdest thing, since I haven't eaten them in years. We didn't end up making them, I think they're still sitting in my freezer. Hmm... perhaps they ARE sending out subliminal messages.
  11. Thanks for the tip middydd, I work in the same building as a Winners, so you'll know where I'll be spending my lunches!
  12. Here's one that I found online (Canadian store, but ships to the States). It only tempers 1 lb, and I have no idea the quality of it (keep in mind the temperature controls are, judging from the picture, "low" and "high"... hardly high tech). For $65 CDN, it might be an option for a home cook. The web site says it's on back order.
  13. There is not a single day in my life where I am not thankful that my parents were able to come to this great country as refugees. Their experiences, and mine have molded me into a person that cares about others... not only the ones in Canada, but in others. It is for this reason that I spend about 10 hours a week volunteering for various organizations. No.. I haven't been inside a Canadian prison. But I have been inside a men's shelter in downtown Toronto, I have talked with people there and have seen the appalling conditions. No, I haven't been at a First Nations reservation in Labrador... but I make it a point to talk to the homeless on the streets, listen to their stories and give them a warm meal when I can. I've volunteered in food kitchens, helped newly arrived refugees adapt and served on various charitable committees, all without being paid a cent. So PLEASE do not try to paint me into a person that sits at home and complains about the world. I firmly believe that actions speak stronger than words. This thread was NOT meant to be me forcing my opinion, that part of not buying goods made in China was just a sidenote in my quest for more kitchen accessories! (But what a can of worms I opened up). Find the 15% that aren't made in China, and buy them. Why? Because I can.
  14. Hi Cwyc, Thanks for your post. I am fully aware that there have been grave injustices in North America and that no country is perfect. I am definitely not taking a holier than thou approach. However, if we take your words: I think there's a world of difference between someone who thought they could have an easy life here in North America and made a wrong choice to enter illegally, and subsequently have to fight to survive, versus citizens of China, Tibet, and East Turkestan who are trying to live their lives in their own countries, yet are constantly denied their basic human rights and freedoms (as outlined by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights). China is a country that actively tortures its citizens. Everyone knows that. Amnesty has a site in Chinese if you would like to browse it www.endtorture.org and this site in English. Besides, my post wasn't "Everyone should boycott China", it was "I boycott China". As a rule, I don't impose my views on others. That is what the problem is in this world. Everyone has an opinion, everyone SHOULD have the opportunity to voice it. Finally, I'd just like to state that I'm not a China hater. My best friends are Chinese. I almost married a Hong Kong man (who I'm still great friends with), and I am always the first person to suggest going to my favourite Shanghai dumpling place for dinner (was just there on Monday). But what I do not support is the corrupt government who thinks that torturing people into submission will stop them from wanting human rights. I do not support a government who thinks that a few token prisoner releases will make people forget the cruel atrocities that continually go on. And I back up my views by avoiding products made in China. Having personally met a number of people who have fled China and Tibet, and hearing them recount their torture in detail, it is the least that I could do. Chococrazy
  15. I saw this product being shown at the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition) in August. Unfortunately, I can't remember what it was going for, but I do recall that it did garner a lot of interest and had I not been tired, I probably would have paid more attention. I didn't bother lining up to get a sample of the grilled cheese sandwich... the wait was too long (who doesn't like grilled cheese sandwiches?) Chococrazy
