    Le Bernardin

Allright! You've given me my excuse to splurge- sixth wedding anniversarry, but tenth year together (and we rarely get to NYC more than once a year) - we take a car service, AND go to lunch the next day!

Don't yet know. We're coming from Williamsburg, so depending on the weather, might subway/walk it, or if we're feeling particularly lazy, take a cab. Do they have valet parking? We could drive there in my mother-in-law's beat up 1980-something taurus station wagon (which she uses to haul paint, drop cloths, brushes, gardening implements, etc.). It is a lovely vehicle - only one of the doors works, one of the the back seats is stuck permanently in the down position, the upholstry is pretty much gone, at least two windows are cracked, and everything is covered with a nice layer of dust, dirt and paint. Just kidding.

I tend to use the word "outfit" pretty loosely to refer to whatever it is I am wearing, whether it be jeans and tshirt, or a business suit. As far as I'm concerned, simple is better. I'm certainly no Vogue-mode-type, so blending in is what I'd like to do. Although I'm most comfortable in casual clothes, it isn't a big problem for me to dress up either, and understated is certainly easier for me than what would pass as appropriate dress attire in, say Dallas or Amarillo. Thanks again, and I hope to provide a full report of the meal when I return - in early January...

(Everytime I post something here, I am certain that I'm going to be mocked into never posting again, but I consistently get friendly, helpful responses.) Thanks for all the quick responses. I will now use this occasion as an excuse to go out and buy a sexy (but professional) black outfit, so that I can play dress up and pretend to be a sophisticated New Yorker for one night, anyway (at least until my unabashed oohing and aahing over the some of the best food in the city gives me away). Look out New York!

    Le Bernardin

Am headed to NYC in a couple of weeks, and will be celebrating an anniversary at Le Bernardin one evening. I have no idea what would be considered acceptable attire for a woman there. I have lived "out west", where relatively casual clothes reign, for so long, that I only own one "nice" dress, and it's sleeveless, so it isn't going to do me much good in NYC in January. Khakis and "business casual" clothing is generally acceptable at even the best restaurants out here, and bright colors are common. I know this isn't exactly a food question, but I want to be able to concentrate on the food while at Le Bernardin, and not spend the entire meal feeling (and possibly being treated) like some poor tourist slob who doesn't know enough to even dress appropriately. I'd much rather just blend in. And does my husband really need to wear a tie??? After reading a couple of other threads here, I'm afraid that if we aren't careful about how we dress, we might get hissed right out of the restaurant!!! Any help would be much appreciated!!
  6. Any kind of marshmallow peeps! I just heard that they now sell peeps snowmen. Ick!
  7. Me too! Me too! Me too! As a blessed-with-a-good-metabolism-and-therefore-unrepentant-good-food-glutton, and as an elementary school teacher turned lawyer turned practicing lawyer but wanna-be writer (ideally about food), I too, would very much appreciate any personal history/insight you may be willing to share. How great a role did fate/luck play in your transition, or is your current status the result of crafty planning and execution?
  8. Innovation is good! I can really get into interesting food options. A recent favorite was a between-course (can't remember the official term for that) wasabi-green apple sorbet served with a few drops of banana-infused olive oil. It was delicious! Bizarre, but delicious all the same. We will definitely try the Tree Room. Thanks again! Oh - and I regularly get together for sushi with the friends that I'm skiing with, so we'll definitely have to hit the sushi place. Great - its 9:30 in the morning, and now I'm hungry - does that ever happen to anyone else while they're on this site? What about breakfast places? Any ideas there?
  9. Excellent. That sounds fabulous. Thanks for the recommendation!
  10. I've never been to Park City before, but happily find myself heading out there to ski in early December. Assuming that I don't break a leg (I haven't been on skis in over 10 years), does anyone have recommendations for great food in the area? Cheap, or not, fancy, or not, doesn't matter to me. As long as it tastes good, I'm happy. Thanks!!
  11. We spend some holidays in Holland with my husband's Dutch family, and I always make sure to pick up several boxes of sprinkles to take home. I have found that putting the dark chocolate ones on buttered bread (use GOOD butter or peanut butter), and then toasting in the toaster oven makes a truly yummy snack. There are a bunch of variations of these things - milk and dark chocolate and strawberry sprinkles that look like "jimmies", milk, white and dark chocolate shavings, anise-flavored tiny ball-shaped sprinkles, and an anise flavored topping that looks like powdered sugar, which is my favorite. The anise flavored round sprinkles translate loosely into "mice", and the powdered sugar stuff translates into "stamped mice", which I find endlessly amusing.... Also, people eat this stuff on round dry toasts that are like giant melba rounds. Apparently, there is some kind of tradition involving serving and/or eating the "mice" (which come in pink and blue) when a new baby is born. Don't recall the details though.
  12. Wow! Thanks for all of the suggestions - I am torn between a butternut squash ravioli with a walnut, brown butter and sage sauce, or the suggested mushroom/seitan saute over cornbread (or maybe polenta?). The requesting vegetarian (my husband) eats butter, dairy, and things made with egg, but just doesn't like the taste/texture of eggs, tofu and lentils. Cornbread, however, is one of his favorite foods, and it could also be served with the cranberry bread just as a bread too. And I suspect that I could sneak the seitan into the mushrooms without his ever knowing that its there. All of the suggested dishes sound wonderful - inspiration for some of the other meals I'll be making over the next week while we've got relatives in town, and much better sounding that the repeated versions of "lentil loaf" that I kept coming across as a suggestion. And I thought that I was just going to be given a hard time for even considering a vegetarian entree. . .
  13. OK, I suspect that I'm setting myself up for some flack here, but I'm getting desperate. I have committed to coming up with a vegetarian entree at Thanksgiving to serve alongside my turkey. The challenge I have is that the requested dish needs to have some protein in it (I'm serving lots of sides already suitable for a vegetarian), the requesting vegetarian doesn't particularly care for eggs, lentils, or tofu. I'd like the dish to also match well with the rest of the main meal, which will be as follows: 1. pumpkin bread, cranberry bread, and biscuits 2. cranberry-apple-pear compote 3. mashed potatos (and gravy, of course - I'm making turkey gravy and a vegetarian one) 4. orange-pecan-sweet potato dish 5. sauteed lemon and sage haricots verts 6. turkey 7. possibly pumpkin soup 8. dessert, as yet undecided Does anyone out there have any suggestions?
  14. I second both Magnolia Cafe (everything there is good, but the gingerbread pancakes are to die for!), and Iron Works BBQ! And if you find yourself in need of a snack, Amy's Ice cream is as good as it gets. They even have an airport location, which is a great place to get that pre-flight sustenance.
  15. Dry weetabix with peanut butter on top. Just bought the cereal last week (attempting to eat something for breakfast besides m&ms), hated it with milk, but it makes a decent, albeit thick, cracker. I wish I had a beer.
  16. Grilled chocolate sandwiches! Must...resist...urge to leave work right now and go home to cook...
