  1. For their pork shoulder BBQ try Speed Queen BBQ, see: http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?act=ST...ndpost&p=346749

The finest thin crust I’ve had in the Midwest can be found at Zaffiro’s Pizza 1724 N Farwell Ave. Think saltine crisp crust.

Someone posted that Jakes Deli serves a pastrami that rivals Katz's in NYC, I have not been myself. Jakes Deli, corner of W. North Ave and N. 17th St. Corned beef is supposed to be stellar as well.

Does Kopp’s serve butter burgers? Solly’s does in Milwaukee. I think the butter flavor is a tad heavy, but then again you will be in Dairy country.

  2. (feel free to move this as i didn't eat at the kitchen table but this seems the most obviousl place for the post)

If you live in Chicago and you haven't been, go. If you live anywhere else, get on a flight and go.

Going tomorrow night to celebrate our 12th wedding anniversary.

We don’t have the kitchen table either, but I will post under this thread as well.

  3. Yes, received it via email but it was very hard for my old eyes to read (and maybe it wasn't the best scan either).  Are the restrictions significant?

  4. We've never been to Evanston, so for our Chicagoland visit next weekend I was thinking it might be fun to spend the day there.

Skip them all & Evanston, seriously, unless you are in Evanston for a reason. It is not that Evanston is bad, there is just better to be had.

Go to the Rogers Park area of Chicago (just south of Evanston). More interesting shops AND restaurants.i.e. the Argyle Street Vietnam section (there is thread in the Heartland forum)

  5. One night I ate at Ferdussi “Taste of Persia” in Santa Ana, but only a couple blocks from my Costa Mesa hotel.

Started out with the appetizer of Stuffed Eggplant: beef, garlic, onion, herbs & tomato sauce. Very rich and very good with the flat house bread (kindof like pita).

Entrée was a special of lamb loin chops w/spices and grilled vegetables, served with Adas Polo: basmati rice mixed with dates, raisins and lentils. Quite delicious as well.

  6. This was a wandering trip during my personal time in LA for me this past week and as usual wandering pays off.

I was looking for a hearty lunch, not chili or stew hearty, but sandwich or burrito hearty. I’m driving down Sepulveda from the LAX airport hotels where I normally stay when I spy Johnnie’s Pastrami. Definitely looked like it had been there a long time, turns out since 1952.

There is a small outdoor seating area around a gas firepit, but it is packed, so being a single diner, I head into Johnnie’s and sit at one of the counter stools. Inside is not large either; I guess 6-8 booths and 6 counter stools.

As soon as I sit down I’m greeted by “hey honey, can I get you something to drink?” Sure ice tea it is.

The cook is going nuts stacking large tins of thinly sliced pastrami & corned beef over the steam vents to keep it warm and moist.

When an order comes up, he would take the bun off the grill, and stuff tong full after tong full of pastrami or corned beef into a sliced 6” hoagie roll.

Looked too good so I order the pastrami.

A bowl of big chunks of pickles is served while you wait for your meal. Not bad, not overly sweet.

My lunch plate comes with fries and the sandwich. Fries are ok, sandwich is very good and I say this after being at Katz’ in New York City the weekend before. Sure Katz’ is better, but Johnnie’s was a really good sandwich, very different from a New York City pastrami.

My “hey honey” waitress is proceeding to make a young boy blush by pinching his cheek saying how cute he is, the husband and wife are laughing and ribbing their son. I lean over to the husband and say, “I wish I would get that kind of attention” he laughs and asks if I’m enjoying the sandwich. Sure I am. He states that this is a local icon and everytime his family is in town they eat at Johnnie’s. We chat some more about local BBQ joints. A nice way to end the meal.

  7. Spice House was good, purchased two smoked paprikas, sweet and a hot. Also purchased "exquisite" paprika, the color was intense. I liked the sweet smoked the best.

Served the organic chicken thighs & the heavenly onions with a naan like bread.

My wife who usually picks around onions even asked the question, "The onions are good, what did you do to them?"

This dish paired with this killer red: '01 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards - Cabernet Franc/Merlot (right bank Napa) made for a wonderful meal.

    Thanks Ronnie.

One tip I would have is put more onions than you think you will need in the dish. I sliced a huge sweet onion and there was not enough to go around.

  8. First off, thanks to Ronnie Suburban for the type of post that makes eGullet such a joy to frequent!

    agreed, (clap clap clap clap)

I'm on my way to the Spice House (I do admit I've never been before), the it is organic chicken thighs purchased from Mitsuwa (Ronnie where are U? ) mixed with Paprika.

on a side note, not a real fan of Rosie O'Donnel(sp?) but after having attended a male/female bridal shower I can relate to a bit she did.

Rosie claimed at a bridal shower she attended, a guest had given the bride a spice rack and each spice was wrapped individually. As each spice was unwrapped, the guests would exclaim "ooooooooooooo Paprika, ooooooooo garlic powder"

  9. Well thanks to jan_az for coming out and joining me for a dinner in the Phoenix area a couple weeks ago. WE PIGGED OUT! It was great fun.

    We had:

The Stetson chopped salad: Rows of arugula, smoked salmon, Israeli cous cous, super sweet corn, marinated tomatoes, Ciao 'trail mix' (asiago, pepitas, black currants), with pesto ranch dressing on the side. This is a must do item.

Exotic Mushroom Pan Fry Cremini, button and oyster mushrooms in ancho cream over double-cooked polenta with grilled portabellini, avocado, tomato and cotija cheese, their signature dish. If love mushrooms, again a must do dish, I could have done w/o the polenta though

    Hoppy Ahi Tuna

seared rare with ground hops & chammomile, served with curried chow-chow, mango soy. Good

Land and Sea seared filet and Ahi-tuna with yuzu grapefruit. Interesting/good.

Miso fried squid with fresh pineapple salsa. Terrific, a must get.

    Bruschetta Tradizionale ok.

Sweet Chile Prawns with pan-Asian slaw & spicy orange nage. OK.

Had some wine by the glass, one of the finest I've had in a long, long time: '01 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards - Cabernet Franc/Merlot (right bank Napa)

I think I’m missing something, so if you can remember Jan_AZ, please chime in.

  10. I was staying at an LAX hotel and really did not want the very mediocre food that even though free, is just sustenance, not a pleasure to eat. So I got in my car and drove. Took about 15 minutes but my search paid off. I spied John O’ Groats. What caught my eye are two things: #1 it was packed, #2 it mentioned seafood on the sign and I’m a sucker for seafood in my breakfast.

Being a lone diner I was happy to see a large 12-14 seat u-shaped counter area to sit at.

Menu was promising with one item that uses biscuit dough for a base to put some yummy items on top of being listed in the menu as “one of the top 100 things to eat in LA” . That was going to be my choice when the waitress passed me the specials list.

    What immediately drew my attention:

    CHEF GUILLERMO’S “CREOLE SYTLE EGGS”

(featured in “In Touch Weekly Magazine”, this new addition combines poached eggs, Swiss cheese, and a fresh lamb patty on sour dough toast topped with our Creole Sauce. This sauce’s main ingredients are buttermilk, diced ham, green onions, and a pinch of cayenne pepper.)

I’ll cut to the chase. One of the best breakfasts I’ve had, EASY!

There were other items that caught my attention such as pumpkin spiced pancakes but I’m am SO GLAD I chose the above.

I do hope to go back and try that “top 100 thing to eat in LA” item. Sorry I can’t remember more detail on the item.

  11. For corned beef there's Jake's on North Av. Not a great neigborhood but Jake's still serves the best corned beef in Milwaukee.

I read that Jakes serves a pastrami that rivals Katz's in NYC. Tough to believe but any thoughts/feedback?

  12. Might I would suggest trying the kobe beef at Yoshi's Cafe.

good suggestion for sure, I've been going to Yoshi's since the "old days" when it used to be ultra fine dining.

FYI, I undertand as there is no Kobe beef from Japan in the US due to import restrictions.
