  1. Between the DiNic's roast pork sandwich and the 12th Street Cantina's tacos, I rarely eat anything else in the market. They're both just that good. But lots of good stuff to go: - The live lobster place has great smoked trout, crab cakes, etc - The pretzel place is indeed good - Sang Kee has good wonton noodle soup - The Amish place in the northwest corner has good barbecue
  2. I too found the tacos to be extremely greasy in my (admittedly only one) experience there. Try Washington Avenue a couple blocks south of La Lupe. Taqueria Veracruzana was the first (to my knowledge) authentic taqueria in South Philly and, therefore, set the standard. I like it just fine, but a friend that spent a significant amount of time in Tijuana - with his Mexican national fiancee - tought it fair to middling. Plaza Garibaldi - my favorite of the lot - is across the street and a little more upscale. Excellent queso fundido (better than Los Catrines). Rio Bravo - a little further west - is a little more ambitious and does some seafood dishes. Elsewhere in the city, there's a couple of places on South Street - the one that's NOT El Rey Sol is supposed to be better. And don't forget Las Cazueles, which I'd put at the next level, and Los Catrines (of course) and Zocalo at yet the next level.
  3. Only noting this because you went to Salt with all female companions, but Pho Xe Lua may be a bit, um, visceral for an all female crowd dressed for bar hopping. I'd suggest Vietnam (across from Vietnam Palace) instead. You just can't go wrong with Vietnam. Also, Sang Kee is great and cheap Chinese.
  4. Square on Square at 19th and Chestnut is better than mediocre. Penang should deliver from Chinatown, and they're on the web somewhere, although the web menu layout is atrocious.
  5. Folks - the Blue and Green on 3rd has been closed for several months. And though I have never been there myself, I've not heard good things about the Jeweler's Row location in quite some time. The 3rd street location is now a takeout fried seafood joint named - wait for it - Seafood Borgata.
  6. Santa Fe Burrito Company (of Jefferson Hospital area fame) opened a location in Liberty Place a couple of months ago. Definitely not cheap ($7.00 for a chicken mole burrito), but probably the top choice when I've got exactly 5 minutes to get lunch.
  7. Although it's not a real lobster roll, Philadelphia Fish and Company has a lobster salad on a toasted bun on their bar menu for $12 that's pretty good.
  8. jsolomon - That's almost worth trying! Alex - Where's the sport in providing a warning?
  9. Stone - But I'm a cool one. Kenk - I'm in downtown Philly, so there's lots of asian markets. I'll check one of them out. Thanks all.
  10. I'm talking about the red pepper flakes that you buy in a jar.
  11. For the same reasons that people remove tomato seeds from red gravy, or pepper seeds from roasted peppers. I don't like the way they look, taste or feel in my mouth.
  12. Sorry if this has been posted before, but it's my first post and I'm still finding my way around. Anybody know an easy (or at least reliable) way to separate and discard the seeds from the flakes themselves? Thanks in advance.
