  1. phila... thanks so much for the info. perhaps we'll try joe poon's place. we did margaret kuo's years ago. it was quite nice! personally, i'd like to try and sway her to something that would allow me more options but this is what mom wants.
  2. hi, my mom is coming to town. it's her birthday and i want to treat her to a nice meal. she wants peking duck. i know of sang kee. i was hoping for a place with a little more atmosphere but if that's the best place for it, we'll go. can anyone recommend another place or back up sang kee as the best place in town for peking duck? i would like to stay in the city for dinner. thanks all! allison
  3. hi, i'm looking for recommendations for sunday brunch. i'm not looking for dim sum, or a diner, or a bar (i.e. standard or n. 3rd) or lacroix. i don't want to wait an hour for a table either. it can be a bit upscale but doesn't have to be. would like something slightly out of the ordinary. thanks for any insights. allison

    Stews

johnny brenda's had both oyster and lamb stew on the menu earlier this week. not sure if they are permanent fixtures.
  5. jumping in here a bit late but just wanted to add the the soy cafe in northern liberties makes tasty smoothies, with many varieties to choose from. they are on 2nd street, between spring garden and fairmount.
  6. howdy folks... i thought you would be interested to know about this new food trust run farmer's market, opening this week at headhouse square... The market will be open every Sunday through Thanksgiving from 10am-2pm at Headhouse Square (2nd and Lombard Sts.) 7. i must add too that their outpost in the 'burbs (wynnewood to be exact) is mighty tasty. though here its called sang kee asian bistro and the prices are higher. the main liners love it so plan on a wait for table or take out. best chinese food out this way, hands down. allison
  8. ok, i've already had my fill of overly watery iced coffee. does anyone make a good one that actually keeps its coffee flavor even after some melting? center city would be a plus as this is generally a lunch time thing for me. bonte does fine and of course there is la colombe, any others? had terrible watery experiences this week from dibruno actually (surprised) as well as passeros. any recommendations are appreciated! -- allison
  9. 2006 schedule is out now! http://www.thefoodtrust.org/pdf/final%20schedule%202006.pdf -- allison

  12. i read about a new place in the south street area, near beau monde perhaps that is just opened and has an israeli chef. can anyone supply me with more details -- i.e. name and location? has anyone been? thanks in advance for the assistance! arice
  13. wasn't this post supposed to be about Matyson?!? in any case, i have a restaurant week res there on wednesday and am really looking forward to it! will report back... -- arice
  14. Thanks for the Nagwon recommendation, I'll definitely try it out next time the urge hits. I'm no Korean food expert so any recs on new places to try out are definitely welcomed. I tried the new Korean place on chestnut (around 20th) for lunch a few months back and really enjoyed it. I tend to go for bi bim bop -- i love the raw egg mixed into rice. YUM! -- arice
  15. i had an urge for korean last night and headed to upper darby to hit woo rae kwan. to my surprise it's now gone and in its place is a shiny new HanAhReum supermarket. it seems they are really classing up the whole block with newly constructed storefronts. i was majorly disappointed, but I was able to pull together a meal from the nice selection of prepared foods in the store. bonus too that this is so close to my house. i always dug the HanAhReum in Elkins Park but it's not convenient. I was not able to find anyone who could tell me if Woo moved somewhere else (language issues) though I was told they'd be opening a restaurant in the upper floor of the market towards the end of the month. -arice
  16. my jewish mom must always go to Abe's for fish when she returns to the philly for visits. she grew up in the northeast and has been going to Abe's for many years. They have some of the best smoked fish in philly. -- allison
  17. Has anyone tried the place in bryn mawr? i can't picture where this is. i'm interested to know... or maybe i should just go check out since it's very close to home for me. -- arice
  18. wow folks, thanks for the tip on the franklin fountain. i stopped in there tonight -- what else should a person do on one of the hottest days of summer? eat ice cream of course! i highly recommend the mint chip (delicious!) in an awesome waffle cone with chocolate jimmies. the gentleman (who i believe is one of the owners) told me that its made by a local dairy (but did not provide the name). if only i lived closer, i'd be there way too often. next time, i'm getting a sundae or milkshake. -- arice
  19. Angelo's at the northeast corner of 16th and Chestnut. Actually came in second when the Daily News held their Best Food Truck in Philly competition last year. ← HA -- wouldn't you know it. i walk by there all the time (my office is at 15th and market). will definitely stop by soon to try out breakfast and lunch... thanks!!
  20. is she still there? also, can anyone recommend a truck in center city with an excellent 1. cheesesteak 2. egg and cheese sandwich? center city for me -- between 12th and 19th, between jfk and locust-ish. thanks, --arice
  21. the fruit and veggies market (i think this is the name), on haverford avenue in ardmore is quite a good, reliable place to check out. it's right near ardmore beverage, dmi hardware and the nut place. -- arice
  22. not new in the least, but the deck at standard tap has got to be the perfect place to have a cold beer in the summertime... arice
  23. I went here for lunch today. I have to agree with your assessment, really tasty stuff. The pita was really good. They also have fried eggplant that you can get on the sandwich and a nice cabbage salad -- everything is very fresh. In addition, that have latkes that you can get as a pita sandwich as well. Will have to try this combo next time. -arice
  24. i'm headed to sansom st oyster house (katie's place) on the 19th for the dinner with John Uglesich. I stuffed myself silly at Uglesich's in New Orleans when I was there about this time last year. Had the most amazing oysters, soft shells and shrimp... I'm hoping this meal will bring back some of the delicious memories of that meal in NO. looking forward to picking up the Uglesich's cookbook as well. I think it's $50 per person. -- arice
  25. greg, thanks for the info. it sounds promising and i'm looking forward to it. i'm rebooked for mid-october. arice
