  2. hi, my mom is coming to town. it's her birthday and i want to treat her to a nice meal. she wants peking duck. i know of sang kee. i was hoping for a place with a little more atmosphere but if that's the best place for it, we'll go. can anyone recommend another place or back up sang kee as the best place in town for peking duck? i would like to stay in the city for dinner. thanks all! allison
  3. hi, i'm looking for recommendations for sunday brunch. i'm not looking for dim sum, or a diner, or a bar (i.e. standard or n. 3rd) or lacroix. i don't want to wait an hour for a table either. it can be a bit upscale but doesn't have to be. would like something slightly out of the ordinary. thanks for any insights. allison

    johnny brenda's had both oyster and lamb stew on the menu earlier this week. not sure if they are permanent fixtures.
  5. jumping in here a bit late but just wanted to add the the soy cafe in northern liberties makes tasty smoothies, with many varieties to choose from. they are on 2nd street, between spring garden and fairmount.
  6. howdy folks... i thought you would be interested to know about this new food trust run farmer's market, opening this week at headhouse square... Philadelphia’s largest and long-anticipated farmers’ market opens on July 1st at the Headhouse Square Shambles (2nd and Lombard Sts.). 62 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, pasture-raised quail and quail eggs, organic fruits and much much more will be available from over 25 farmers and producers. The market will be open every Sunday through Thanksgiving from 10am-2pm at Headhouse Square (2nd and Lombard Sts.) Headhouse Square is located just blocks away form historic Old City, Independence Mall, and South Street Details about vendors, events and much more are available at www.headhousemarket.org
  7. i must add too that their outpost in the 'burbs (wynnewood to be exact) is mighty tasty. though here its called sang kee asian bistro and the prices are higher. the main liners love it so plan on a wait for table or take out. best chinese food out this way, hands down. allison
  8. ok, i've already had my fill of overly watery iced coffee. does anyone make a good one that actually keeps its coffee flavor even after some melting? center city would be a plus as this is generally a lunch time thing for me. bonte does fine and of course there is la colombe, any others? had terrible watery experiences this week from dibruno actually (surprised) as well as passeros. any recommendations are appreciated! -- allison

  14. Thanks for the Nagwon recommendation, I'll definitely try it out next time the urge hits. I'm no Korean food expert so any recs on new places to try out are definitely welcomed. I tried the new Korean place on chestnut (around 20th) for lunch a few months back and really enjoyed it. I tend to go for bi bim bop -- i love the raw egg mixed into rice. YUM! -- arice
  15. i had an urge for korean last night and headed to upper darby to hit woo rae kwan. to my surprise it's now gone and in its place is a shiny new HanAhReum supermarket. it seems they are really classing up the whole block with newly constructed storefronts. i was majorly disappointed, but I was able to pull together a meal from the nice selection of prepared foods in the store. bonus too that this is so close to my house. i always dug the HanAhReum in Elkins Park but it's not convenient. I was not able to find anyone who could tell me if Woo moved somewhere else (language issues) though I was told they'd be opening a restaurant in the upper floor of the market towards the end of the month. -arice
