And Suzanne, you're right. We'd all just be looking at each others' notes, crumbs and smears.

Hmmm. The thin edge of the wedge. But ok. Hard bound. (Not that softbound cookbooks don't count.)can we count my Art Culinaires? They're hard bound

And of those two are more my cooking journals from when I was growing up - recipes in a large childish hand and collages and so on.
So maybe 45. Sigh.
I feel deprived. That's it - I'm going to the favorite cookbooks thread and ordering 5 more.
That's it. Amazon, here I come.
Excellent idea, maggiethecat.

That, Jude is an understatement. And I admire your steps to make sure your collection stays in good shape. All in all, not a bad little hobby.
But, a good point. Collectors collect, whether it be bottlecaps, art or, as Sir Peter Wimsey used to say: incunabula. (Sp.? Always loved that word)
Thanks to your motherlode, we are at 20,585. 3.89 miles.
Thanks, Indiagirl!

I am using a totally unscientific average for height of book: 12 inches. And I am laying them out end-to-end.maggiethecat - the engineer in me wonders - what average dimensions are we using for these cookbook to mile conversions?
and are we laying them end to end or stacking them like they would be in a bookshelf.

But, hmm, if we averaged the thickness, and stacked them....how long to get to the moon?

Your library lets you check out 43 books at a time?!I only own 76. But, can we count the 43 that I have currently checked out from the library?

The 43 is cookbooks. I also have 6 mysteries, 2 non-fiction, 3 fiction, and Peter has 23 books checked out. Oh, and I think Diana has 8 checked out. Minneapolis Public Library rocks. You can check out unlimited (I think), they have a great selection of current DVD's and videos, and an awesome selection of cookbooks. And on-line reserving (they e-mail you when book is in) and renewing. Plus our branch is 4 blocks away.Your library lets you check out 43 books at a time?!I only own 76. No, books from the library don't count. Otherwise I could pad my meagre total.

When shopping today and picked up a book on tsukemono (Japanese pickles), I am dtermined to make my own umeshu (Japanese plum wine?) this year.
I also picked a Cooking with Winnie the Pooh book for the kids and we just finished making a vanilla cream pudding from it.
