I want to smash that garlic into the potatoes. For a singlet I sometimes do a cornish game hen just to get the optimal proportion of skin to meat for a single meal.
I was just thinking about c. game hens. The last ones I did--which was a few years ago- turned out dry dry dry. Maybe they were old....if I recall they were on sale.

When in doubt steam and finish with a glaze under high heat. Quick, juicy and simple.

You didn't tell us there was going to be a test.
This has not been trussed properly.
Oh no! Not improper trussing! Do you think it's going to explode?
(To further scandalize any chicken-trussing purists: I bought it that way. That particular brand trims and trusses the bird before packing it, so it goes into the oven with a minimum of effort.)
Hey, whatever works works, ain't no right or wrong if it tastes good!
Mmmm roast chicken....

I like your style. An afternoon beverage:
5 fresh strawberries
cracked ice
2 oz. light rum
1 oz. Canton ginger liqueur
A squeeze of lemon
-all whipped up with my immersion blender.
Just the thing for a sunny afternoon on the porch.
My naive stereotype of US Southern porches when I was younger involved people sipping Mint Juleps. As I got older, I found out what was in them. And to think that people used to have them in the morning!

Salami, cold roast chicken, Manchego cheese, 9-grain bread, and a little mayo and mustard. I remembered to bring almost everything I need but forgot to pack paper plates, which is why I'm eating off of a bread bag.

Can I be nosy and ask are you meeting up with friends, or is this a vacation for just yourself? I've always wanted to just get away on my own for a couple of days and just do what I wanted the whole time. Even if it's just sitting outside with a glass of wine :)

I'm on my own. It is extremely indulgent and relaxing. I've never done anything like this before - I pretty much went from living with my parents to living with my husband (with a few college roommates in between) and I've never traveled by myself. I was actually a little anxious before heading out this morning - I realize a drive to the beach isn't exactly backpacking through China, but I do feel quite successfully independent.
I would have been nervous, too. I did a 12 hour one way drive and back on my own, though, a while ago and it gave me so much self confidence :)
P.S. I love the eating on the bread wrapper--it's recycling and no dishes.

Lunch (or brekfast, even) of champions. Perhaps especially because you're eating off a shopping bag.
Awesome journey so far.

Chicken and tomato with mayo and mustard on a wheat roll. Taco flavored Doritos on the side.
The "complimentary deluxe contintental breakfast" offered by the hotel was unexceptional from a culinary standpoint, but it did allow me to appropriate a few paper plates, napkins, and a plastic fork and knife so I don't have to eat off of wrappers anymore.

I'm back home, safe and sound. I ended up driving straight through again. So after ascertaining that my house was still standing, I headed over to one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants, Ilios Noche, for an afternoon snack:

I love your ‘theme’! I am a big ‘me time’ person and have threatened to run away from home in order to get it!
I’ve printed out your strawberry cocktail recipe – I want that as soon as the strawberries are good.
I love your plates. Are those really hieroglyphics?
In my recipe file cabinet, I have a print out, probably 15 years old, with a description of Yquem. I’ve never tasted it, but I've also never been able to toss the paper – I’m haunted by this wine. I jumped and smiled when I recognized the bottle!
Taco flavored Doritos are manna.
This is so good.
