It is one of my favorite fish. When in season (fall) it is wonderfully fatty but without tasting fatty. :hmmm: It is has a bolder flavor than most white fleshed fishes but not at all fishy tasting like mackeral. It takes best to quick cooking over a strong flame with a nice sprinkling of salt. It needs no condiments.
They are quite big one fish is easily a one person serving and they are also very cheap. We picked these up at 3 for 199 yen (about $1.75).
I highly recommend them if you can find them. You should also be able to find them as sashimi or sushi now. In Japanese they are called sanma.

Mmmmm... sanma sashimi. There are two fairly good Japanese seafood purveyors not too far from me, so I'll be sure to look for it. Would it be at all comparable to the texture/consistency of chi-toro or o-toro, or is it less fatty tasting than that?

It is nothing like ootoro or even chutoro as the flesh isn't as soft and it thinner. It looks like this

Heh. I got all excited because I saw an answer and now I see that my photo is only coming up "sometimes" and the rest of the time it just says "user posted image".

Just goes to show how regrettable my photo-posting skills are, too.

Let me try to figure it out - it may be a little while because I actually have to finish cooking dinner. Pah.

Well, okay. I'll spill the beans.

Actually, I didn't "spill" the beans. That. . .was split pea soup.

I had to make it for a pot luck thing at the kids school - and as I was dashing back and forth between children and cat and ringing telephone, it started boiling.

Ah, such lovely scum rises from split pea soup!

Naturally, my thoughts went to this thread. I wanted to join in the halls of fame.
So even though I had started skimming, I hastily threw it all back on.
And went to grab my trusty camera.
And I must say that my photography skills added an undeniably frightful look that did not even exist in real life! Woooo hoooo!

If I had to title the thing, I would call it "Old Milt on a Massive Scale". Heh.

.................................................

I feel so. . . .VALIDATED! Sigh. Must do this again some time.

P.S. Actually, as so many of these things are, it was quite tasty.

Hey! No fair! Your not allowed to deliberately make food look worse in order to qualify for inclusion into this thread!

Although in the interest of full disclosure, since this thread was started, I have, on occasions been disappointed that the awful colour of some of my dishes in real life wern't reproduced accurately on camera which made my dishes too pretty to present in this thread :(.
PS: I am a guy.

Both of those look mouthwatering to me. A little green on top of your Cioppino and I would order it in a restaurant.

Alinka, those two pictures both look great to me. Very sharp, and color-balanced and whatnot. And yeah, I'd eat that stuff. If that's the worst you've ever done, I reckon you're way ahead of the curve

Heheh, good one that. I'm relieved you've found something worthy of this gallery of shame -- you're always posting so many excellent pictures in the original "Dinner" thread, dude.

Joie, I'd say the flesh is somewhat similar to sardines. Fairly oil and with good flavor. Grill /roast plain and serve with grated daikon and soy sauce. A classic entree for a traditional Japanese meal.

I have an idea...I think in the earlier, red x picture, you used a link to a picture on whatever photo storage website you normally use...from what I can tell, it's MSN. We used to be able to do that, but as far as I know, we can't anymore. In order to have pictures in your post, you must use ImageGullet, which is a pain in the butt.

But I could be wrong....

Edited to add: That picture of pea soup truly was disgusting. I think it's my favourite of all the regrettable foods. Good work!

Thanks, prasantrin! Though I must admit that I am rather enchanted myself with that hot dog thing that Eastern Sun posted a little while ago - but my "favorites" do seem to keep changing as more marvellously evocative wonders appear.

Ok, now I feel bad about posting those pictures after hearing your praise (thank you, by the way, I think I'm getting addicted to the support I get here on eGullet ). Of course these are not the worst things I ever cooked, I'm just too embarrassed to save those on film for posterity .

Here, I've rummaged through my computer and found this:

This is an attempt to show one of my favorite breakfasts - buckwheat kasha (eaten hot).

Posted Image

That didn't seem right, so I decided that a close-up will look more appetizing -

Posted Image

Mmm... maybe not .

And here's what happens when I try being creative when photographing my food. This suspicious pile is not what you think; it's home-made roasted pepper hummus. Dig in!

Posted Image

Wait! That's not all. Not quite a photography problem, but a problem nonetheless. I spent about an hour making blini (Russian thin, large crepes), and then another hour making fillings for them, and then stuffing them. Very traditional (that was for a Russian party), very yummy. Then I decided to put them in the fidge until evening, when I would fry them in butter. And HERE THEY ARE!

Posted Image

The rest somehow ended up in another corner of the kitchen.

Daniel, that sandwich looks so delicious! I really want to bite in right there in the middle.
