The eGullet Tech Team has worked through half the night, and the site is now functioning such that it's possible to post and use most of our features.

We are, however, continuing to work on our upgrade and will be doing so for at least a couple of days. Please hold your questions and comments for the time being. Chances are we've already been looking into most of the incomplete and open items. We wanted to restore your service as soon as possible, but that means we will be upgrading on the live site for awhile.

A few specific comments:

- We are not accepting any new registrations until the upgrade is complete (Status: new membership applications being accepted as of 2:00 a.m. EST Nov 20)

- Internal links, such as between posts and between our Webzine and forums, will not function for a little while longer (Status: now functioning as of 6:30 a.m. EST Nov 18)

- Avatars will be along shortly (Status: avatars are back as of 8:30 p.m. EST Nov 28)

- We are still working on the dropdown menus in the top navigation bar (Status: dropdown menus scrapped; new system in the works)

- There are a number of new forum hosts; we will be making announcements about them over the next few weeks

- The various new features of the site will be explained in a series of announcements over the next few days and weeks (Status: please see Upgrade Tech Tips Part I for the first set of instructions)

- We are in the process of running a massive reindexing of our database: every character of almost 400,000 posts needs to be indexed; until that is done our search engine may function intermittently (Status: now functioning as of 11:00 a.m. EST Nov 19)

- Server performance may be slow for awhile (Status: server performance at acceptable levels as of 6:00 a.m. EST Nov 20; at this point if you are experiencing slow page loads it is not likely a server problem but, rather, a software-browser-platform issue)

We'll provide further updates as we have more information. Many thanks to the eGullet Tech Team and the folks at Invision Power Services for their excellent work on this project.
