I was reviewing my library stacks in the South Bronx yesterday afternoon, when I came across a book I'd forgotten I owned.  It was a good beer guide to New York, published in 1995.  The author, Michael Jackson - Britisher, Trotskyist, real ale campaigner, and TV beer pundit.  At a glance the book was way out of date.  Has anyone seen more recent attempts to give a beer-focussed guide to New York bars?  (The Shecky's guide is useful for a general impression of what a bar is like, but doesn't get into much detail on the drink front).

"Ale Street News" a publication for which Comrade Jackson occasionally writes, had a survey of favorite NYC beer purveyors last year.  I'll see if I can locate my copy.

It was very un-yuppy, with places in Queens and The Bronx rated highly. Prices under $3 a pint were preferred

Potentially interesting, although one of the drawbacks with Jackson is that, if he likes the beer, he'll give a thumbs up to an otherwise utterly grim and unlikeable bar.  He doesn't care about atmosphere if he's got his nose in a good pint.

probably not what you're looking for, but perhaps helpful on some level:

zagat's puts out a "nightlife" guide, not much unlike its restaurant guide.  it has a category for "beer specialists" or something of that sort.

also, the Time Out New York Eating and Drinking guide has a "Bars" section with some detailed reviews.

newyork.citysearch.com has some info that might be worth browsing under "nightlife", where you can choose "brewpub" which gives you a list of bars that probaby care about beer.

or you could just keep going to jimmy's and not worry too much about it.  :D
