Anyone have any good suggestions for places to pick up some top italian / italian-style ingredients? after good olive oil, salted anchovies, mustard fruits etc - not London based but happy to mail order.

Not Staffordshire but, possibly, not too far for you (Whitefield - just off the northern bit of the M60)

And, by the by, you'd be 5 minutes away from the Metro Fish bar - a recent regional winner of the Chip Shop of the Year competition. Almost worth a trip in itself, IMO.
Then, perhaps, you could go on to Bury market and make it a full foody day out.
