Anyone Know Whatever Became of Yoo Choi?

she was chef/owner of the once very heralded and now sadly closed velvet cafe in vancouver, just wondering if she is still in the food industry

I thought she and her husband went into the furniture making business up North. I really enjoyed the Velvet Cafe as well.

too bad as i always held some hope that she would re-open another place here in town btw did velvet actually go out of business or did she just close it because she neede aa change, anyone know? i still find it very strange as the place had tonnes of great press and a very loyal following, James Barber to name just one

Some people have interesting lives for sure ... especially people that can pull off high-end cooking and then do something completely different to make a living.

Like Trevor Hooper of Raku back on W10th(?) Asian-fusion cuisine?

He's doing high tech stuff now, got out of the restaurant biz. Some people amaze me.

Sadly Yoo Choi committed suicide earlier this year. From the CBC website:

"B.C. casinos need to do more to help addicted gamblers, says a man whose wife killed herself after running up more than a $100,000 in debt at a downtown Vancouver casino.

Yoo Choi was a second-generation Korean-Canadian from Camrose, Alta., who made her mark in Vancouver as the fun-loving owner of the once-popular Velvet Café on Broadway."

wow i must only check here every 6 months or so , so i am floored by the news, what a bizarre and tragic turn of events
